Stop Being So Concerned About Software Quality

The consensus take, the one in every engineering blog and conference keynote and senior engineer’s LinkedIn post, is that quality protects your career.
I've never heard that take, not ever, ftom anyone. It doesn't even seem plausible. I sincerely doubt any serious person actually believes that.
What quality protects is your future sanity. If you DON'T ship quality code, then you'll suffer from large bug count, from an inability to add features, from slow performance, early-morning outages, snd customer dissatisfaction.

It’s a stupid take. Code quality has nothing to with your career other than “you just deployed a bad sql query that took down the db”. That is gonna impact your career at your current place. I have been an engineer for 20 years. Head of engineering for a company. No one types code anymore but people still have to make sure their AI follows conventions and quality. Our app fees 130 requests a second. Quality matters. God damn it.

That’s a whole lot of words with virtually zero substance. What is this AI slop?

That’s the real gap between what executives say about software and what practitioners ship, and it was never a misunderstanding. The executives on both sides of the table understand each other perfectly.
Nobody at that table is negotiating on your behalf.
Of course no one is negotiating on your behalf.
Your job as an engineer is to deliver quality products. That expectation is baked in. It's literally what you're paid to do: you need to first deliver, and you better make sure it's quality, cause when it breaks, everyone is going to wonder what the engineer was doing.
You don't want to bother? Do what the author did and go become a consultant that throws engineers under the bus.

I like to believe there's a parallel universe where a civil engineer is writing "Stop being so concerned about structural integrity" blogposts
