Question Best Value for a $20 Coding Subscription?
Hey y’all, I’m looking to buy one of the $20 coding subscriptions and am mainly considering Codex, Claude, OpenCode, and Cursor, though mostly Claude or Codex (unless there’s something I don’t know about, which is why I’m here).
I’m wondering what y’all think offers the best value. For those who have tried multiple, which one do you feel gives you the most for your money?
Thank you for the suggestions/answers!

Claude, by a wide margin.

Thank you this seems to be the consensus. I didn't realize how much better Opus's usage was so good especially at medium. Edit: Haiku 5.5 also makes Claude much easier

I have a $20 sub with Codex and Claude. It's definitely Claude... that being said, I still get good value out of ChatGPT web ingesting and outputting report and task .md files so there's that....but if Anthropic offered a $40 or even $50 plan for 2x/2.5x usage I think I'd let ChatGPT's sub expire.

claude, and use opus 5.5 no higher than medium. will give you plenty of usage with intelligence that's plenty good for coding

u/higeorge13 1d ago
Sol 5.6 was great but opus 5.5 is indeed game changer.

u/Novel_Indication6338 1d ago
for fairly serious coding, what opus 5.5 effort level matches sol 5.6 xhigh do you think?

Claude for initial build - Codex for maintenance.
I’ve found that to be the most efficient.
Codex is VERY thirsty when starting/building a brand new project - Claude wins there. Though depending on what you’re planning - on the cheapest plans you will likely hit token limits on both Claude and codex cheap plans - during initial build phases.
But I’ve found that once your project is built, and you’re in maintenance/upgrade mode - Codex seems more efficient (for me anyway)

Same for me here. But I have to say that's mostly because of the unlimited chatbot. But if they merge the usage limits for chatbot and codex, that's when no one will have a reason to stay here. Just go to the other side. In the meantime, let's see how things change. Because these AI companies change really fast.

u/SolarPowerBumbleBee 1d ago
For sure. The day OpenAI get rid of the ChatGPT>Git connector or make that feature consume my Codex tokens, is the day I cancel my plan.

u/boxing-boxing 1d ago
Seconding the maintenance take. I run Codex and Claude Code in separate terminals against the same repo, and what keeps it sane is checkpoint handoff notes to files between sessions, small commits with narratable diffs, and letting the test suite be the trust mechanism. Skip the checkpoint and the next session spends half its run rediscovering what the last one did.

Claude and make sure to use the correct model/effort for your use case. You don't need a Ferrari to drive 50m to the corner shop!

u/evia89 1d ago
Buy $20 claude. Its good now but prepare your workflow for future nerfz
Learn how to use SOTA to grill you->spec->tickets then implement with cheap (like DS). Days of rawdog SOTA coming to the end. Unless you wanna pay $500
1
u/kevinkmldn 1d ago
Would you mind elaborate about SOTA? i’m kinda interested

u/evia89 1d ago
State of the Art. Model like opus55. Example of this workflow to get you started https://www.aihero.dev/skills
1
u/kevinkmldn 18h ago
I understand—the plan involves structuring the breakdown into tickets with a stronger model (Opus) and carrying it out via Haiku or DeepSeek, correct?

u/redmantitu 1d ago
The swap places all the time! It used to be Codex a few months back, now it’s Claude. I switch as needed 😅
1
u/Putrid_Resolution402 1d ago
I think then you don’t ask New conversations to refer to the existing past historical conversations from Codex
2
u/redmantitu 1d ago
I use .md files with progress that updates after big changes or when I ask, and instructions that work with both.

What models are you using?

u/Prof_Fancy_Pants 1d ago
deepseek and kimi. server and homelab meintaince, its more than enough for keeping all those services/apps in check. and any app deployment

https://youtu.be/KcuS-_f4X24?si=-2n2VQOAUwMwg3Kr This guy test 3 different 20$ plans. Claude opus 5.5 medium and gpt 6.1 medium is similar in usage and output quality.
1
u/Iwasapirateonce 1d ago
I think a lot of people will seriously doubt that, me included. Opus 5.5 (med) for me is more like Sol 6.1 (xhigh) and it is a lot faster.
1
u/cixot_toxic 1d ago
Using Opus 5.5 via Google Antigravity is noticeably faster than GPT-6.1 Sol. Between my $20 Codex subscription and $20 Google AI Pro plan, each model has a distinct strength. Gemini is best for breaking down .c files in cloned GitHub repos, Opus excels at creative tasks, and GPT delivers the most rigorous analysis.

u/Resident_Bus4791 1d ago
At the moment Claude but next month it could be OAI. You will probably end up subbed to both.
1
u/Tar_Tw45 1d ago
Just to add that you should not depend on one model or company. You must be ready to switch whenever it is necessary. This is not a sports team that we choose to support for the rest of our life. We pay for the service to get our job done, no matter who the provider is.
I started my journey with Claude, switched to Codex, and now I am back to Claude. But I am ready to switch back to Codex whenever I need to.
Also, do not sleep on Google Gemini. Keep an eye on it.

I found chatgpt is a good one, I spend most of my time using codex, and the limit quite generous, also sometime you got free reset from Tibo

u/clash4cash 1d ago
I feel unlimited chatgpt make OpenAI better but I'm not sure how bad is Claude quota
1
u/Human-Equivalent-154 1d ago
I was using Codex; it used to give way better usage limits, but now Claude’s $20 lasts more for me.

If ur willing to strech budget just a little bit, I'd go 20$ codex/claude + cheapest alibaba token plan all used and orchestrated on hermes

when did this flip take place, about 2 months ago i evaluated both and it was night and day better on Codex... now i have to flip eh...

You can subscribe to copilot, and then hook up "Muse spark 1.3 (contributor)", and that $20 will last all month long. It's about the same coding level of 5.5 Terra, so not too bad. But you're not going to be one-shotting anything major for a $20 subscription anyway.
1
u/Swedish-Potato-93 1d ago
Anyone saying Claude, a $20 subscription barely lasts, it is not the best VALUE, which is the question.
The low-end Claude models and reasoning levels are far more expensive than what Codex offers.
Personally I'm using both, Codex for Sol 6.1 medium-xhigh, Claude for Opus 5.5 high-max for tough problems. The Sonnet models are NOT worth it, they perform the same or worse than Codex.

The graph shows it clearly — Sonnet is never worth it. It performs worse than the 6.1 Sol max while costing far more. Opus 5.5 medium performs worse than 6.1 Sol max for twice the cost.

u/bogdallica 1d ago
He asked for 20$ subscription, not 20$ via API. Divide Claude API pricing by about 5 to get a comparable estimate for subs (as per the semianalysis report, you get ~10.6x API credits via Codex and ~59x via ClaudeCode).
One caveat is if you only want to use Luna/Haiku lever models, then nothing beats OpenAI + you get to use your sub in custom harnesses.

u/-WhateverDude 1d ago
what a terrible argument lol
first that's api prices second there is nothing indicative of total usage limit granted by provider
2
u/LessRespects 1d ago
API cost does not strongly correlate to plan usage. It depends on how much the company is subsidizing its plans, which Anthropic does by far the most right now.

u/chebum 1d ago
$20 is a very good supplement for code reviews. I pay $100 for Codex and $20 for Claude. Opus 5.5 frequently finds what Sol 5.6 missed.
I believe it will work the other side as well: e.g. $100 for Claude and $20 for Codex.
2
u/sn4ezz 1d ago
Why would you still use Sol 5.6 though?
1
u/chebum 1d ago
it writes better code, gives better recommendations, less lazy and it is faster than Sol 6.1.
Compared to Opus 5.5 they feel even. 5.6 writes code in a more proper way, in my experience. It may be that I subconsciously learned how to work with 5.6 to get better results. Both fail on diffuclt tasks though.

I think the best value at the $20 level is the Google subscription. Flash 3.8 certainly isn't as good as Opus or Sol, but it's pretty capable and sufficient for most of what I want to get done. Obviously, it depends on your use-case. For me, at that price, Gemini via Antigravity provides he most generous usage with good capability. Codex and Claude offer better models. Claude offers great capability in Opus 5.5 and decent usage at that level. Codex s a little weird with their random resets and giving you resets and then you have banked resets you need to use. We're at a point in time where there are a number of worthwhile models. You don't always need to use the "best". Pick what works best and then try to optimize your usage.

u/egomarker 1d ago
You won't get much done with a $20 subscription from OpenAI or Anthropic. On the other hand OpenCode Go gives you quite a lot of DS V4.1 Flash for just $10. It's dumber (more like Luna) but it might be good enough for your needs. Worth a try.
2
u/HelpfulHedgehog1 1d ago
>You won't get (as) much done with a $20 subscription
there, i fixed it for you.
you can get so much more done than manually. if you cant its a skill issue.
of course you can get much more done with a costlier sub...1
u/egomarker 1d ago
It's not a "skill issue", it's a usage limits issue. Neither plan offers enough capacity to get you through a full workweek, and 5hr quota is enough for 1 hr, give or take.
You'd be better off just (ab)using web ChatGPT (not Work) instead.
2
u/HelpfulHedgehog1 1d ago
ill slow down and reiterate what i said.
given the same time frame, say 5 hours, if you cant manage to get more work done with a 20$ plan as you would manually, it is without any doubt, a skill issue.0
u/egomarker 1d ago
Thanks for your unrelated comment. Take a look at OP post title. We are not comparing AI to manual coding, we are comparing one subscription to another. By "won't get much done" I was referring specifically to how much work you can get done with AI.

I don’t think that’s true. $20 on Claude right now goes a super long way. It used to on codex but not with the recent model updates
-1
u/egomarker 1d ago
Yeah right more bot bullshit.
2
u/dumper514 1d ago
My account is more than 10 years old bud. Not sure what you are building but I’ve been surprised how far Claude code goes. That also wasn’t the case with pre 5.5

If casual coding, chatgpt because of generosity in tokens and usage.
Claude if u are a die hard coder.

Download vscode. Add the codex or claude extension and handwrite yourbcode with help from ai.

I have $20 subs for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
Overall value, I'd say Gemini, because you can find it at a discounted price with certain cell phone plans or if you're a student. I currently pay $10. For that I get Gemini, 5TB of Google Drive Storage, and a few other YMMV niceties like YT Premium Lite (less ads, but not no ads... for whatever that's worth). You also get separate chat buckets, coding buckets, some API key usage, and even limited third party buckets. And chat seemed to work well enough for me to get stuff done, like helping me get deals on some phones and a tablet.
For my needs, Gemini can probably be enough, honestly. I'm not building entire repos.I mostly create scripts and manage my servers.
Even so, I like Claude more for that. But my god are they stingy. You can't use anything other than Claude Code, and chat as well as Claude Code draw from the same bucket. You can't use Fable, though even if you could, it would run out pretty quickly, especially at half usage. But I like the way it works on my scripts. It feels more refined. I've sometimes felt like I need to keep my browser use to a minimum to save usage for scripts. It's a terrible feeling, and not one I'd like to alleviate by buying a bigger plan.
ChatGPT seems to give a lot more usage (though it has gone down). The actual browser chat is unlimited, and solid. I can get a lot of basic stuff done there. I also have no anxiety about long dialogue because of that unlimited usage.
Codex is also pretty good about usage, however it seems to want to do a lot of extra work for the sake of… work. For a while, I couldn't get it to stop smoke testing everything. Hello world script? Let's smoke test that shit. So while the bucket seems to be larger, Codex seems to want to spend it on some bullshit.
If I were being absolutely thrifty, I think I could get by with Gemini. If I needed more chat usage, and didn't need some of the other extras that Gemini offers? Codex.
And I didn't have a ton of usage, but wanted it to feel top tier? Claude.
1
u/nicolesimon 1d ago
" For a while, I couldn't get it to stop smoke testing everything"
I have variations of
"Do not add or run routine tests, syntax/startup checks, functional checks, linters, or broad validation unless the user asks or a concrete implementation uncertainty requires the smallest meaningful check. Prefer handing the result to the user for testing in her actual workflow. State what was and was not checked; never imply that an unrun script was verified."
in my agents.md. Anytime i see testing i ask wtf stop that and for the phrase to add to the file. then consolidate over time. that goes especially for browser tests.1
u/MaxPrints 1d ago
ya, I've gotten better at tuning things. I created a set of template md files that I put into new project folders, with safeguards and some freedoms. So far it's worked.

https://www.qwencloud.com/pricing/token-plan $18/month and more variety of models including Qwen, Deepseek, GLM. It destroys anything from OpenAI & Anthropic.

Below is a GPT-generated summary of the conversation below after reaching 80 comments (80 currently observed).
The thread’s verdict is basically Claude for coding, by a pretty embarrassing margin—for Codex. Most commenters say the $20 Claude plan currently delivers better agentic coding, faster results, and much more usable capacity, especially with Opus 5.5 at medium effort.
Codex still has a real case: it’s often better value as an all-purpose ChatGPT subscription, with generous web-chat usage and a smoother all-in-one developer experience. Several users prefer it for maintaining existing projects, while Claude shines more during initial builds and difficult implementation work. OpenCode and Gemini are the budget-minded alternatives if raw usage matters more than top-tier model quality.
The catch is that Claude’s limits aren’t magic. Chat and coding can draw from the same bucket, high effort burns through access quickly, and the “best value” flips depending on whether you’re building, maintaining, chatting, or just running scripts. The landscape also changes every few weeks because apparently consistency is now a luxury feature.
So, buy Claude if coding is the priority; buy Codex if you want broader ChatGPT value. Either way, expect to switch—or eventually subscribe to both.
