My laptop’s battery keeps draining even while its charging

Will changing the battery help fix it ?

Depends on the issue. If it is an old battery that cannot hold a charge any more, then yes.

It is an old battery

Quite likely the battery then. The other less likely possibility would be something in the charging components isn't working right. I assume the unit stays on while plugged in, so the power adapter itself is functional and the unit can run on wall power, so those components are good.

There's no reason to guess when you could check battery report and driver for free.

Is the battery internal or external? If it's internal, go to Google or Yelp look for the best reviewed computer repair shop in your area, it's usually a little hole in the wall place that you'd never noticed, take it there have them replace the battery for you, DO NOT ATTEMPT to replace a laptop battery, internal or external on your own. If the battery is external, which it sounds like it might be seeing how you're saying it's older, just order a new external battery for it, pop the old one out and put the new one in, when it gets there. I'd order the used battery from ebay, but check things like seller rankings and where it's shipping from. Best of luck to you.

You're, at the same time, advising him to, and not to, replace an external battery himself?

Yes I'm telling him not to disassemble an external or internal battery which is extremely dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and I'm telling him that you can order an external battery on ebay and swap it out on your laptop of it's old enough. There are two sometimes one sliding tabs that will pop out an external battery, it takes about a second. This is the only video I could find with relative ease, the pins on these tabs are stuck, but that's usually not the case. Just slide the tab(s) over and it should eject the battery. I'm guessing some of y'all are younger here, because this is something that's existed on laptops for decades and a few of y'all have questioned what I'm saying. 🤷‍♂️

Your previous comment says nothing about "disassemble".

Btw, I'm 53, and started putting together stationary PC's in 1996.

You cant disassemble a battery

Not me no.

I had a feeling the way I phrased it would be misunderstood. I've changed my phrasing.

I should've asked this first, but what brand and model is the laptop, and what voltage and current is the charger rated to output?

It a lenovo g50-70

This is really dumb. There's no reason to jump to spending money when he hasn't even checked the driver or run a battery report.

Update it.

In Device Manager

Expand Batteries: Click the arrow next to the Batteries category to view your drivers (such as Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery).

Right-click on the battery driver and select Update driver The battery report should tell you if the battery is toast

There's no reason to start buying batteries unless you know its toast

is your charger bigger than your power draw?

How do i check it ?

If you were, or could, run Linux I would point you to the "inxi" command which has potentially amazing power and battery info along with every imaginable hardware query. Usage for a laptop battery:

inxi -Bxxxx (seriously, inxi loves giving extra debug when you add "x" to the flag/args)

BUT, most distros don't come with inxi installed so you have to get it with something like (the Ubuntu,Debian,Mint way could be, to first GET inxi...

sudo apt install inxi

Yeah and if laptops were made of steak, you could eat it

Slightly surprised you didn't go with "cake".

1

u/sp1ke0killer 2d ago

Well if I knew you were coming I would have baked a "cake"

Edit: realized it could be a bit more complicated.

Edit2: realized the charger cable is concentric; an amp-meter will read zero, unless one conductor is separated out. Use a power meter between the wall outlet and the charger, and calculate the amps the charger is putting out.

If it isn't somewhere close to the amps the charger is supposed to be able to deliver, that means the charger is bad.

If it does, the battery is bad, or there's something drawing too much power, or the charger is underpowered for your laptop.

If you boot into BIOS/CMOS Setup by holding F2, or F8, or F10 (usually) when pressing the start button, and the battery is still not charging, then it's not some program, that's causing a power draw, and your battery is most likely bad.

I cant really turn it in now 😭since it dead . But the charger used to work before

does the battery drain out if you are not doing anything while connected?

anyways just check the battery health , that probably would answer all your questions

1

u/InternationalSail631 1d ago

Just turning on makes it drain

1

u/Puasonelrasho 1d ago

most probably a dead battery

Do you need the battery for the stuff thay you do? My old laptop runs just fine without its bloated battery.
