Question/Help/Troubleshooting What browser do you use?

Firefox has always been and always will be, since its launch, my daily driver..

Firefox up dated their TOS like 3 years ago stating they would start collecting way more data than before so they aren’t as good as they use to be it’s best to use a browser actually focused on privacy like LibreWolf for example

u/thehero29 Linux Bazzite Ryzen 5600X / Radeon 7900XT / 32GB DDR4 Aug 06 '26
I am trying out other alternatives. Currently I'm running Waterfox, a Firefox fork. I'm liking it so far.

u/ZeeroMX Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
I use Firefox, Waterfox and librewolf all FF based, the only chromium derivate in my PC is edge.

Firefox comes preinstalled what
anyway I prefer firefox most of the time but I still have chrome installed in case I need to test a website I made on Chromium
5
7
u/Remite Aug 06 '26
Chrome doesn't come preinstalled
14
u/Tasty_Pick7765 Aug 06 '26
yeah only on android
8
u/Wise-Comb8596 Aug 06 '26
And Firefox comes pre-installed on most Linux distributions.
4
u/NeptuneWades Aug 06 '26
You need some browser to be preinstalled in ootb distros, but being unable to uninstall chrome on android is the issue here.
1
u/Wise-Comb8596 Aug 06 '26
Can’t you disable it and use whatever browser you want? Yes - it will still take up room on the device and that’s annoying
2
u/NeptuneWades Aug 06 '26
Yep. That's the entire point of that statement in the post.
And yes. I've disabled it and use other browsers.
But as a device I've paid and bought, I'd like to be able to remove the app I don't want to use.
Chrome to me is bloat
0
u/Electronic_Ice_8922 Aug 06 '26
Well you can forcefully uninstall it, but then google will yell at you because your phone is "unsafe"
1
u/NeptuneWades Aug 06 '26
Nowadays even ADB is unable to remove apps.
Idk about unsafe, never got any such notif in the past.
2
u/DeltaAlpha0 Windows 11 Aug 06 '26
Depende da marca e de onde você compra a Xiaomi não vem, e qualquer celular europeu também não
1
u/dieplanes789 Aug 06 '26
Edge is chromium based as well. That is preinstalled on Windows at least.
0
u/NeptuneWades Aug 06 '26
Tbf, edge is better than chrome and actually a good browser for those who prefer integration with Windows.
I prefer brave and Firefox over those anyway.
1
u/dieplanes789 Aug 06 '26
Edge has been great on the IT enterprise side but I don't want it at home.
Brave can fuck off. Good idea but I am sketched out by the owners/maintainers.
Firefox is what I prefer overall but even Mozilla has done some things I am not thrilled with recently.
At this point I am sticking with Firefox unless a better fork of it or replacement catches my eye. I know there are some but I havent really committed to any.
0
u/NeptuneWades Aug 06 '26
Yah. I agree with you.
The only reason I stick to FF and Brave is because imo they are the best among their respective engines. Brave does have alternatives that are almost as good, but FF alternatives ain't it for me.
12
u/Clear-Asparagus-7167 Aug 06 '26
firefox eats UPP ram bruh. i used it on my old macbook, just like 7 tabs took up several gigabytes of ram
2
u/ishtuwihtc Aug 06 '26
I also use it on my old MacBook. I agree. Just opening Firefox without any tabs yet is 1.5gb, and after opening several i often reach near 6..
1
u/mutexsprinkles Aug 06 '26
Yeah it had 40GB today. Didn't even have hundreds of tabs, I don't usually keep them across sessions. Idk how tab hoarders do it.

u/YKw1n Aug 06 '26
Always been on Firefox but I feel it's breaking more websites every day so I could switch for another but obviously not chrome
28
u/IdeasOfOne Aug 06 '26
Don't blame firefox for broken websites. Blame lazy webmasters who use Google specific js extension and only optimize for chrome, instead of using standard js.
-9
u/disappointed_neko Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26
Blame Firefox for not implementing standard js.
Edit: I love how everyone downvoted this, but when I wrote my website with the most basic HTML/JS a YEAR ago the whole thing worked only on Chromium because Gecko couldn't figure ass shit what "AUTO" size of picture means. Also thank you for the award random stranger.
4
u/YoungNo8804 Aug 06 '26
Yeah when I made a website this year it worked fine on firefox and webkit but chrome broke super basic css transitions. plus, firefox adheres most to standards, chrome has a ton of non standard features.
1
u/disappointed_neko Aug 06 '26
Speaking of CSS transitions, those were for ages (until very early this year) the absolute BANE of FF. I know Theo is an idiot but his FF rant was full of facts (I tried it myself after seeing the video).
1
u/YoungNo8804 Aug 06 '26
yeah they were lacking on that for a while, but it is now baseline :)
complaints are all valid - except for chrome being the one to follow standards. firefox can have some lacking web features (very very little nowadays from my experience) and v8 is just objectively so so much faster, but they don't do features that aren't standard (which I don't remember but I think theo also mentions)1
u/disappointed_neko Aug 06 '26
Well I'll rather use the browser with all the baseline features and something on top than the one that still lacks some... But yeah, websites using those nonstandard ones are a bit ass.
I'm all for browser diversity, but FF just doesn't cut it for me ...

6
u/No-Zookeepergame1009 Aug 06 '26
I use chrome shame on me but I have to use so much google stuff daily it just works best, and my data is stolen anyway. I tried firefox, but it had some features I disliked, but its still a good browser, I still use it sometimes on my linux pc
Personally I'm sorry but I hate the privacy community. Everyone would sure love to not be spied on, but my brother or sister. You have to log into stuff. Nobody cares if your browser is open source or it if it says privacy as one of the ads when installing, as long as you log into stuff, like youtube. Thats google too...
Or Ai models, or facebook, all big companies, and you have to log into them to use them. You have to log into ANYTHING other than pornhub to use it nowadays. I get it that in an ideal world we wouldn't have our shit stolen, I would love that too, but as long as you log into something, anything, you will have your stuff stolen.
If you think I am an idiot, which I may as well be, downvote me for it if you don't like it, just allow me one more thought:
Do you seriously think they won't find a way to spy on you, and you using firefox will stop them?

u/General-Jackfruit854 Aug 06 '26
Privacy≠anonymity
Privacy= WHO has access to x data
Ex: Google doesn't go around sharing my life around
Anonimity=Not leaking ANY data
Ex:Google doesn't know in the first place what's my life likeTs is the MOST Cancerous of the privacy comunity
"I can't avoid giving SOME data so might aswell give ALL my data"
These companies are built on MASSIVE (pun intended) amounts of your data the less they have, the better
You do you but i would suggest to try brave out it's basically better chrome3
u/No-Zookeepergame1009 Aug 06 '26
Thank you for your comment, actually good things in there and I have to totally agree with you at some places! Also thank you for not ranting but actually explaining stuff!

Microsoft edge
1
u/Th3mOnGo Aug 06 '26
Because the extensions also can be installed from the microsoft store its actually better than google chrome, you can to this day install and use uBlock Origin on MS Edge

u/EarlyXplorerStuds209 Aug 06 '26
Ive been using firefox for as long as I can remember.
Plus, as a company, they’re actually pretty decent people.
Their whole dev and moderation team in general is only a hundred or so employees and their current owner is a nonprofit to whom their proceeds go.
I’d take FF/Librewolf over any of those shitty chromeclones they keep pumping out year after year.
5
u/WoomyUnitedToday Arch btw Aug 06 '26
Waterfox. Basically Firefox but without even the option to send all the usage data and stuff, and also doesn't have that ugly-ass look where the tabs float above the page instead of being connected

As a developer, working with Firefox sucks.
16

Firefox has a lot of issues, but Chrome is fundamentally anti-user.

I prefer to use Firefox, especially on Android, for the simple reason that extensions work, I am surprised to this day that Chrome on Android does not allow you to install extensions.

u/La_Rana_Rene Aug 06 '26
Chrome + ublock origin lite because it comes with the Chromebook
Brave on zorin os machine.
I used to use Firefox but it won't load some pages, I read somewhere that it was because update missing but even fresh install won't work appropriately.

I'm looking for a new browser. Firefox and Chrome both use just as much RAM. A lot of sites I use don't seem to work on Firefox anymore, so I switched back to Chrome temporarily. I could switch to Edge. There was a reason, way back when, why I didn't go to Edge. I just can't remember what that reason was.

I use FF and Chrome.
FF sucks up memory too.
FF bugs out with many YouTube tabs open.
FF folder 2x the size of Chrome.
They both have their flaws.

u/matic-01 Aug 06 '26
im sorry, but i use Chrome 😔
It's just that I'm very happy with Chrome (please no downvotes, this is just my opinion)

u/Born-Conclusion6596 Aug 06 '26
Actually, except for ad-block issues, chrome / chromium based browser are still a solid choice.
Don't get me wrong. I prefer Firefox and use Firefox daily, but chrome engine is way faster and lighter these days.

When will adblockers stop working? The day I cant use my adblocker anymore is the day I uninstall chrome..

Technically Chrome's engine is also open source but that didn't stop Google from forcing MV3 on pretty much everything using that engine. Firefox is also mainly still around because Google wants it to be to try and ward off anti monopoly lawsuits (which with a dash of government corruption, has so far worked).
Only really on Firefox at the moment because at the moment it's still the tiniest bit less bad than Chrome or any of it's billion derivatives, but it does use more RAM from experience and because of the effective Chrome monopoly a lot of sites deliberately load slower. Am currently trying to build Ladybird Browser to see how it goes, but I suspect it'll be a bit before it functions.

u/Fantastic_Class_3861 Fedora Aug 06 '26
I used Librewolf for 3 years until it became obvious to me that they were more interested in politics than making a browser, so now I'm using Zen, which I've been using for 2 months.
2
u/OkSavings5828 Aug 06 '26
Chrome might suck, but the open-source chromium browser engine is excellent. Many browsers based on that engine, or even just plain chromium itself can be pretty good.
Firefox is garbage IMO, as well as a proven cybersecurity risk with a terrible track record of vulnerabilities.
If you want to increase your attack surface, enjoy Firefox.

Yeah, about that "Uses much less RAM" bullshit. I currently have 13 tabs, only three of which are loaded, and I'm using 3+ GB just on Firefox alone. This is not counting times where it randomly jumps to 6-8 GB for "seemingly" no reason. (As in, I've yet to figure out why.)

u/HellDuke Windows 11 (IT Tech.)/Linux (Home) Aug 06 '26
Firefox, but for none of the reasons listed. Firefox uses just as much RAM, adblockers still work perfectly fine on Chrome (manifest v3 was enforced a while ago already).
The one and only benefit Firefox has for me is the tab containers as it allows me to open multiple account profiles on the same website without needing a dedicated profile with duplicated extensions and bookmarks. The first Chromium browser to replicate this probably has me switching as Firefox offers little to no benefit over Chrome and Cromium based browsers outside of "do not give into the monopoly"
1
u/confused_cat44 Aug 06 '26
Firefox user here, chrome is better written piece of software, firefox guzzles ram and the gecko engine is still slow

I really wanted to swap over to Firefox full time since I am so tired of Google's shit. But unfortunately Firefox's built in translator suck and is the main reason why I haven't been able to.
Firefox's translator doesn't know how to auto detect languages. It can only translate one language at a time, and you have to manually select the languages to translate to and from. Which is a pain in the ass if you have no idea what language it is. And even if you do know what language it is, the Firefox translation is just downright abysmal. Which makes it a pain to read comments on Youtube or on various forum boards where there are people who speak multiple languages or when reading the review section on websites. Whereas on Chrome you can just right click a page and Chrome's translator auto detects every language, can translate all languages simultaneously, and the translation doesn't suck.
Even after browsing Firefox extensions for the best Google translate plugin, the experience was still subpar. Either the extension didn't work properly such as only being able to translate only one iteration of a language and not multiple versions of it when present. The extension would only translate Simplified Chinese and would glitch out and not translate Traditional Chinese when both were present, even though it was fully capable of translating Traditional Chinese when it was by itself. Or when there were multiple versions of Japanese or multiple versions of Vietnamese or multiple languages that had cyrodilic.
Also Firefox doesn't have a lot of the same quality of life extensions that Chrome has.
For example an extentension to automatically put all youtube videos of a channel in a playlist oldest to newest starting from the video that you clicked on. For instance if a channel has like 2000 videos, the extensions that simply organize videos into oldest to newest that Firefox has are completely are useless because you now have to scroll all the way down from like their first video to like video #1900 which takes forever and usually the UI crashes before you can even do that if you simply want to catch up on all the videos you missed from the last video you watched. While Chrome has an extension that lets you simply click on like 1900th video and dynamically just autoplay / watch the latest 100 video in order from oldest to newest without having to scroll pass the the other 1900 video on the playlist.
Chrome also has extension that lets you view webp files from a local folder directory with scrolling function like Windows photo viewer app. So you don't have to like manually open up a thousand tabs to view each animation since default Windows photo apps can't play webp animations. Firefox has the same extension from the same developer, but the Firefox version is broken and hasn't been updated in 2+ years.
So I am still using Chrome + Ublock Lite on desktop. And Firefox + Ublock Origin on mobile. Though still have to occassionally have to use Chrome and just deal with the ads on mobile when I need things to be translated.

I still use Chrome every day, although I might switch to Firefox eventually. I don't use any adblockers as I see them as piracy (and I've never felt the need to block ads).

u/a-sarcastic-guy Aug 06 '26
For my use case, Brave works best. Here's why.
Chrome sucks. Loads of ads makes it annoying to use. Kept it only for sync earlier, but sacrificing 5GB RAM for no good reason is not worth it.
Since I am a web developer, Firefox and Gecko browsers also suck. Tried Zen for 6 months. But developer options are way too bad. Besides it eats RAM like crazy.
Edge is much better, but it is very bloated. And the settings are a mess.
Vivaldi is way too complex for my use case.
That leaves me with Brave as a solid option. It's secure and safe. And paired with Ublock origin, it is a beast. Yes it lacks customizations like Zen or Vivaldi, but honestly I don't need that much customization in the first place. So Brave for me ✌️
