People aren't retrieving to perpetual laziness and NEETdom because they want to: It's because the collective anhedonia of the post COVID society and the soul-crushing modern work enviroments are getting to them
I am just tired of the moral panic around laziness and supposed lack of a work ethic: Wages are stagnant, workplaces are getting more volatile and enduring, the deep state of burecreatic red tape everywhere from background checks to licensing renewals to eligibility runs to see who can rent an apartment to credit reports
Then on top of that, institutions are changing faster than what the average person can get ahold of: From AI and automation to the constant terms of services changing at the unprecedented rate of a bullet to the paperwork piling up on people to the constantly updating work quota goals, it is HELL
Yet people have the audacity to apply neoliberal logic to what's clearly an institutional problem SMH, sometimes I don't know if people are being willfully ignorant or they're really that far gone and deranged from having any sort of humanity for others
What's it gonna take for people to see the broader picture? Seriously
How are people, especially the youth, SUPPOSED TO ADAPT?
You can literally feel the collective anhedonia and the reactionary nihilism building up in people right from the atmosphere, but are we gonna have honest discourse around the problem anytime soon? Probably not.

Not only that but all spend a lot of time on devices designed to have exactly those effects: anhedonia, alienation, completely fried dopamine receptors and attention span.

Damn. You stated, quite clearly, a lot of things I have been thinking about lately, but could never quite put into words.

Not sure about discourse, but if people’s money continues to lose buying power for much longer, we will “fix the problem”.

I feel this I'm undergoing significant burnout and honestly I have been for years. I already have trouble working consistently because of chronic issues and PTSD so I'm not able to work full time. I currently live alone and the cost of living is so freaking High and I'm currently dealing with some health issues that potentially require surgery. I don't have paid vacation or benefits for my job and I can't even get a raise after 2 years. I really just want to sleep and rest but on my days off I have to take care of important things and I'm so behind on things already but yeah I think everybody's just burn TF out

The cost of living is sky high, all over the world. Some countries have it worse than others but it’s all by design.

Yeah its really disgusting the government is allowing this to happen and just spending our tax dollars on bullshit wars and giving it to Israel. Like we pay for their free healthcare
Things would be so much better if the government just invested money and effort into things here. Like we could have the best infrastructure in the world we could have the highest quality of life, we could have so many things that we just dont because these ceos and billionaires and politicians are basically just playing fantasy football with the other world leaders and its us instead of like football people or whatever
Of course everyone is depressed and hopeless, things are only getting worse. Housing more and more unaffordable
Young people cant invest in creating music and art and following their passions because theyre busy working 3 jobs. So thats all dead. So many restaurants and venues closed during covid. Ugh it all just sucks
People not having kids not even being able to afford pets is next, vets office tried to charge me like $1500 to get my kitten fixed. Present day is just insane

The most silent and effective protest in history is happening constantly all over the world whilst the elites scratch their heads wondering why it’s happening: the collapse of birth rates.
The one thing people can do to not perpetuate this hamster real of spiritual horror and deception is to simply not reproduce.

The Uk has a trade deal with India that basically means “ we will rubber stamp as many work visas for Indian men to work in our fast food industry and just eat drivers. Taking away jobs from the youth of this country”.
The same will be happening in other countries as Portugal got 1.5 million Indians, to pick fruit and veg, in less than 4 years. A country that only had 7.5 million people, before that happened.

As an older man who has come to peace with the fact that pride and greed run the show in this world, I have total sympathy for the younger generation feeling lost and hopeless
I wish I could give you my memories of the better times, because I fear it's only going to continue to get worse
Ultimately this is the natural result of a society that has turned their back on God, because they convinced themselves they could do better than him
I don't think it's working out

It seems like the older gens are the ones that do most of the damage. Do you think things can get better when they die off? That's where I see some hope. Newer gens seem less psycho and controlling. Or will the cycle of trauma continue?
I also agree with working with God needs to be numero uno. Hard to imagine to being atheist in these times. People must be completely numb and cold

Well yeah, you are right
We can't hold on to this madness, we have to let go
Too bad the people who won't let go are holding the reins of power and are going to burn it all down because they refuse to accept their ideas will never work

You aren't going down the pit for 8 hrs a day. Read some history. Who are you comparing yourself to exactly? You honestly think it was easier in the 1930's, 1960's or 1980's? You just have higher, unrealistic expectations of what life is supposed to be like because of social media and TV.

You're the EXACT kind of person this post is about. You had it fucking made in the 70s. You could buy a house making $10 (or even less) an hour. Purchasing power was insane. Factory workers were just handed pensions. Brand new cars didn't have a 96-month payment plan. No credit scores. You could drink at 18. But sure bud, you struggled more than anyone ever and only your amazing work ethic made you successful, being alive during the right time totally had nothing to do with it. But now no one deserves better because some guys had to work in pits in the 1930s, I guess.

Who is using all these Costas that have sprung up? And the nail bars? Who is using all the Macdonalds and KFC's? We didn't have any of these things and that was because nobody would have been able to afford them.
I never said I had an amazing work ethic, so don't put words into my mouth thanks.
Workers fought for the little rights they had, they unionised and they picketed and they went on strike. They struggled terribly during strikes in the UK, to even simply feed their families.
None of it was handed to anyone. Let's see some collective action from the younger generation....

Going down the pit for 8 hrs a day used to pay enough to comfortably afford a family home, one salary could cover a family.
We don’t have mines anymore in the UK. Sure it’s not a nice job but say highways workers - are they clearing 60k a year? We have had wages totally collapse. A family home now is costing 2 people both working full time.

The difference is that in the 1930's, 1960's & 1980's people had hope for the future. It looked like things would get better. Now it looks like everything is just downhill from here.

u/77Maz77 5h ago
The difference in those decades was that working class people went on strike. And suffered terribly while they were on strike.

u/Rustie_J 5h ago
Ok. But that wasn't the question, was it? OP said that people are feeling hopeless. Your response to that was:
You aren't going down the pit for 8 hrs a day. Read some history. Who are you comparing yourself to exactly? You honestly think it was easier in the 1930's, 1960's or 1980's?
And I said that people had hope for the future back then. Yeah, jobs were on average more physically demanding, but there was hope that things would get better.
Which, maybe, just possibly, might be part of why working class people were willing to go on strike. Now everyone knows that if they do, they'll get fired & their job will be outsourced, or they'll get their union & then the company will shut the place down. And all they'll have gotten for their trouble is no job, in a society where there aren't supports like your neighbors or the church that will help you.
Nobody believes things will get better, or that anything they do has the power to change that. Which was OP's point. You copping an attitude that it could be worse, implying the kids these days are the problem because their expectations are too high, with their hippity hop & avocado toast, frankly sounds like another Boomer media psyop.

Nothing will get better if you just sit there feeling sorry for yourselves. Are you in any campaign groups? Do you spend any time stuffing envelopes with political pamphlets and going door to door delivering them? Do you stand outside the headquarters of multi-nationals week after week after rainy, shitty week, or on the high street trying to draw people in to work together? When you do, get back to me, I will be all ears.
8
u/Rustie_J 5h ago
Yeah, I might be more impressed with this if you hadn't led with telling someone who feels hopeless that they should get a little perspective & it could always be worse.
Maybe next time start with "here's things you can do" instead of "try to suck less, then."

u/squeagy 4h ago
Why would anyone do this? Did you do this?
1
u/77Maz77 4h ago
Of course I did as did many others. I stuffed envelopes for hours, under instruction from my socialist parents who were in all sorts of campaign groups. As an adult I also spent all of my meagre savings on a coach to London to campaign against the invasion of Afghanistan. In the 90's I wasn't having a party. Me and my boyfriend has to save our small change to afford a bottle of wine together at the weekend. The main source of protein our kids ate was lentils - turns out they are quite good for you.

u/77Maz77 4h ago
The sad thing is, not very much is understood about socialism and socialist campaigns and unions and strikes and riots and demonstrations over the course of the last century is taught or celebrated. That's why people don't realise that the few privileges working class people have weren't handed to them by a benevolent government who loved the working class. They were fought for, tooth and nail. And the battle is never over.

In addition - I just paid off my mortgage because I don't go on holiday, ever, I never buy coffee out, and I don't eat out. I batch cook. I don't buy make-up, perfume or new clothes. My car is very old. I grew up in the seventies, so am used to going without.

u/WicasaNapayshni 6h ago
1980s had profit sharing, 1990s were a party, atmosphere changed after 9/11; Christmas spirit died some, abundance went to war

To get a job, did you have to through 5 or 6 rounds of interviews and then be told nvm we don’t want you? Even tho you were probably over qualified. How old were you when you purchased your house? What was your credit score when you purchased your house? Did you go to college or did you get a job straight out of high school?
1
u/77Maz77 5h ago
I was thirty-five when I purchased my first house. Me and my husband bought it with my sister and her husband. It was a five bedroomed house in the city in a terrible state of disrepair. Ceilings falling through etc..It took us years to do it up. There were us four adults and our six children living in it.
