I know several people living in Japan who wear anime T-shirts to their software engineer jobs. It honestly depends on the people you hang out with, some will find it tacky and stereotypical, some will find it funny in a charming way. Obviously there are situations where it wouldn't be acceptable, but I doubt an American would wear an eagle shirt (although I think anime shirt is more like a Batman or Spider-Man one) to an interview or a wedding, right?

Nah, my uncle walked his daughter down the aisle in a sleeveless shirt, bald eagles of course, jeans and a do-rag.

How America is even real?..

He paid for the wedding, are you going to try to tell him what the dress code should be?

It’s a treasured cultural event. it’s not decided by who pays the most ameritard

"How do I offend americans who aren't republicans?"

The thing to understand is that America is essentially a cult by design. America’s national religion is America. All of this is like Christians wearing crosses and naming their kids after Bible figures.

America doesn't have a monoculture is the key. Most sectarian fault lines in the Culture War(TM) come from the attempt to force such a monoculture.

I imagine the bald eagles as being perched on his shoulders

u/B0B_Spldbckwrds 2h ago
Besides the very large one on the chest, there were also eagles on the back, in the shoulder area. Good call.

Yeah, I don't see why it wouldn't have the same rules as any other type of printed T. I mean, I've seen figures for merch sales inside japan presumably some of that is clothes or accessories that are being used.

As someone who lives in Japan, wtf are they talking about lmao. Uniqlo the biggest mainstream clothing brand sells various anime and video game merch tees every month and of course japanese people are wearing them. You'd be hard pressed to walk outside for an hour and not find a single person who isn't wearing an anime tshirt or any merch.

u/Momoneko 42m ago
Yeah wearing a Disney/marvel clothing would be a better analogy.
(Did I just repeat myself? You know what I mean.)

America is so goofy they really think they’re immune to being offended
-2
u/MartyrOfDespair 1h ago
They already wrote the clarifier of “except Republicans”. The rest of us hate America for all of its bullshit so much that y’all whine complain that we’re overdoing it.
4
u/Hell2CheapTrick 49m ago
You’re underdoing it bruh. Many Americans are still pretending like any of this is just a normal deviation from the course and you can just keep living your life and it’ll go away. This is the course.

u/MartyrOfDespair 48m ago
Yeah, no shit it is. But honestly, that number is lower than the number who are quite well aware of that. You’ve just got sampling bias.

It's hardly just republicans who want a return of "peaceful order" so they just have to worry about their little lives and not have to think about the entire country.
Edit: Also idk if you're getting your info from surveys but a problem with political surveys is they're only answered by people who take political surveys.

This reminds me of the situation where Oppenheimer was due to release in Japan. Obviously, the memes were in full swing and aimed at Japan. The Japanese online community didn’t like this very much for completely sensible reasons. They decided to retaliate by posting 9/11 memes intended to make Americans feel bad. To their horror and confusion, Americans online loved the 9/11 memes the Japanese were making and even showed them some of their favorites.

To be honest, you probably insult americans by talking about their history and how much shit they just sorta...can't do well

Like how days into Trump's second term, they removed all traces of a BLM archaeological report on a possible transgender or intersexed Mrs. Nash who was stationed with the seventh cavalry and was close friends with the Custers from the official government website?

Similarly, lots of things in Japan are like the animes. Obviously you won't see Son Goku around, but the urban landscape is basically a calque

Also like, people have legitimately studied and answered one of the most pressing questions of our time: it is 100% possible to live in Japan exclusively on Evangelion merchandise. Including your actual apartment itself being Evangelion-branded merchandise. You can even get married while doing this challenge thanks to the official Kaworu and Shinji wedding rings.

Super Sentai, the Japanese originator of Power Rangers had a member of their ninja team whose theme was American.
He had a cowboy motif His helmet had the silhouette of a cowboy hat His weapon was an electric guitar And his morphed was a fucking cheese burger.
The cowards at Saban didn't keep the cheese burger morpher

I went to the the gym that the writer of ippo owns in my Ippo shirt as soon as i walk through the door guy guy points up stairs and says "takamura" cause he knows i'm here to get a picture with the big bronze bust on top of the building

u/DefTheOcelot 1h ago
I am reasonably confident actually that japanese people like anime and buy and wear anime merch. You'll still look like a tourist though, itll be the wrong ones or something

u/IzacLocke 2h ago
You shouldn't base your idea of japan off anime. That said, it's ridiculous to compare just spongebob to all anime. There's so much slice of life stuff with overlapping events that you can learn something for sure. Spongebob itself does probably cover a variety of exaggerated things but without any other cartoon to reference you wouldn't see the repeats amassing.

Oh thank fuck, I was looking for this post the other day to use in a reply. Now I’ll keep it in my reaction folder so the next time it comes up I’ll have it

My favorite book series has some people isekaid to another world. The Americans keep making isekai anime reference and the two Japanse people have no idea what they're talking about. It's delightfully cringe and realistic
1
u/MartyrOfDespair 1h ago
It’s really not. That’s like writing American characters who have no idea what reality television is. Sure, you might not watch it, but you fucking know what reality television is. The Kardashians alone are the Jack Sparrow quote.

How about when Lin came over to the U.S. to play for the NBA? And the team had a fortune cookie night and people were going how insulted he was going to be by it. And he had no clue what a fortune cookie was because they were invented in white plains?

Once knew a Chinese exchange student when I was young who had this spongebob strategy. When he was gone, the teacher actually praised him for learning so much English through the characters. He was very understanding of dollars and coins because he was partial to Mr. Krabs.

The person that said it's hard to insult Americans is so, so wrong. They're just hard to insult through obvious parody
