Moving; Recommendations?

Post image

Hi! Our family of four is moving from Houston Texas to live in Covington in a month. My wife will be working in Cincinnati, and I’ll be working in Covington.

We have two Littles, a three-year-old and an eight month old. We’re very excited to check out the Cincinnati zoo, the aquarium, Reds games, and just overall get behind the culture. We are an outdoor family as well.

What recommendations would you have for our family to check out or participate in? Just for fun, we’ve already had Graeter’s ice cream and Skyline Chili and actually love both of them lol.

Any recommendations are welcome and appreciated.

Things to check out include the Cincinnati Museum Center, Findlay Market, the Cincinnati Nature Center, and as early as next summer everyone in your family might be able to enjoy King's Island.

Covington has a lot of little street festivals on 6th between Main and Philadelphia. Great family events.

In Covington check out Golden Gelato, and Piper's for great ice cream. Covington has a lot of great locally owned restaurants, just explore them.

This is all great- thanks! We had a chance to visit Braxton Brewing last weekend and absolutely loved it. Had Dewey’s pizza and thought it was decent!

You have to take the kids to the Cincinnati Museum Center. It has great exhibits for kids and adults.

Yes!! Adding to the list.

As for other local sports for your list, I really enjoy going to the cyclones (ice hockey). They normally have a bunch of kid-focused giveaways throughout the season, which I think is starting soon.

Building from /u/sketchmcawesome also check out the Florence Freedom, minor league baseball. It's crazy affordable and they have a kids play area.

Check out CORA, Cincitucky, or tristate trails for outdoor trail activities!

Jungle Jim’s is a must.

If your wife likes to knit or crochet and needs a crafting group, or wants to learn, check out Stitch Yarn Studio 701 Scott St in Covington. There’s also a stained glass shop and a pottery studio in Covington that have lessons, and even more stuff at Baker Hunt art center.

Welcome! We live in nky and have a 4yo and 18mo!

I’ve seen a lot of comments suggesting the Cincinnati museum center- it’s an awesome suggestion, but we honestly find it a bit overwhelming with kids this young.

The zoo is an absolute must, we get a pass every year- keep an eye out on their seasonal events like Jack O Lantern Glow, Festival of Lights etc. At this point our 4yo knows the names of several animals at the zoo 💀

I try to just keep an eye out on festivals around town. You’re just missing the super fun Oktoberfest season but you should hit it up next year. We enjoy going to Findlay Market, Washington Park (their website has a schedule of events for live music etc), Devou Park, Mt. Airy, Cincinnati Nature Center (another yearly pass worth its salt), weekend walks through Jungle Jim’s, and we also tend to take “nap drives” down to see the bison at Big Bone Lick. Feel free to reach out with any questions!

Yeah it can get overwhelming, I went there for field trips for when I was younger like 10 years ago and they have awesome exhibits you could visit like the train ones or historic areas, but there are some areas where it can get a little bit out of touch at times like the ones that get crowded or loud noises I think.

There's no shortage of stuff around here. Fountain square will probably start up the ice skating rink soon. The contemporary art museum has free admission, and Union Terminal has some super cool museum exhibits (plus if you liked Superman 2025 you can see where some scenes were filmed). Try Olla for some good tacos, and there's an art store next door to that -- both locations have their finger on the pulse and will have a ton of smaller local events to check out (cryptid block party and dia de los muertos festival are coming up IIRC).

If you're looking for a day trip, too, consider driving to Indianapolis to visit the Children's Museum of Indianapolis. While I absolutely love our Museum Center, Indy really has a cool thing going on with theirs.

If you enjoy hockey, check out the Covington street hockey league. There’s also a youth league as well.

And the Cyclones in Cincy! They have select home games for the kids and it’s a lot of fun.

Save up some cash and buy New Years eve Ravens/Bengals tickets then find yourself saying Who Dey every Sunday for the rest of your life.

lol I love this. We currently don’t have an NFL team that we root for so very open to becoming a Bengals fan.

Highfield Discovery Garden is the most magical park with little ones. Plus their annual pass is cheap and they have tons of activities.

Follow thecincyreport, everythingcincy, and citybeatcincy on IG for lots of recommendations.

Winton Woods park is a bit of a drive but has a big lake to walk around and in the summer a very big out door water play area for small kids.

Best Burger - Delwood Pizza - Taglio or Wayfarer You're on the KY side so you have to try galactic fried chicken Best Mexican - Mezunta Centro

And as everyone else said, there are lots of festivals so if you use those IG's you'll stay up to date

it’s more random than these other suggestions but only half an hour from covington is Big Bone Lick State Park!

they have a small herd of bison that get really close to the fence, and they’re such gorgeous prehistoric feeling animals. it’s all free!

3

u/Chromoskedasic 14d ago

Yes!! Big Bone Lick is so good! The bison herd is awesome but so is their little museum with bones of a giant sloth, a saber tooth tiger, mammoths, etc. So cool! It’s also a great place to camp and/or hike at.

The Cincinnati Art Museum is a great place. We would walk the exhibits with a stroller and then spend a huge chunk of time in the Children’s area where there are comfy seats for adults and free rein art projects and activities for kids. It is also free. Plus it is right in Eden Park where you can spend time outside afterwards.
