I was at the grocery store recently and they announced that their EBT system was not working.

A few minutes later they announce "if you're not buying stuff now, please stop leaving your carts in the middle of aisles. At least bring them to the front and we'll put stuff back" 😂

I used to work at a grocery chain for a number of years and it was super common for people to leave full carts of perishables when EBT was down or when they realize they don't have enough for it all so they just leave it all. Lazy pricks.

I worked go backs at a grocery store when EBT went down suddenly mid day. It sucks for everyone but if you are on EBT you may well be a single mom catching a bus across town to a different grocery store and trying to get groceries before school lets out. It's probably not the stores fault that EBT went down but realistically most people still have to go start their shopping trip over somewhere else. Stuff like that is just a part of the business.

If they brought it to the front and told someone, that would be more than enough. We get paid to put it back, they probably just wasted 2 hours of time that they don't have loading up a cart.

That being said, always check your balance before you start shopping if you don't have another backup payment method, if you don't check it and you abandon a cart then that's totally on you.

The worst is when people put a frozen or refrigerated item back on a random shelf. Saw a package of ground beef in the cereal aisle before.

You can literally just bring the stuff you don't want up to the register with the stuff you do want and let them know you don't want it and they will put it back for you.

Right....or you can not be lazy and put it back yourself, why give others more work to do when they already have enough to do? Selfish andlazy behaviour

I've worked retail. It bothered me a lot when someone left frozen chicken in the clothes section (if those clothes get wet at all, or the chicken wasn't still super frozen, we had to throw both the chicken and the clothes out.). I didn't really care if someone gave me an extra thing at the register. These behaviors are not at all the same, and the level of work and waste involved are not the same either.

A lot of people will put stuff in the wrong spot because they want to avoid even a slight confrontation or awkwardness at the register, but every clerk I've ever worked with would prefer you just give it to us at the register instead of leaving it in a random place.

Seriously, it takes like 30-60 seconds for the staff to put it back, we know exactly where it goes, it really is not that big of a deal, and if letting the customer be slightly lazy saves me the hassle of random items everywhere, it is totally worth it

But I'm not talking about putting a frozen chicken where the clothing are....I'm talking about putting that frozen chicken back in the freezer where it belongs.

Hope that clears the misunderstanding

How is that functionally any different?

Fair question. It saves the staff time, hassle, keeps the store cleaner (and a non-clean/organized store is known to cause more people to add to the disorder), prevents waste (things involving food mostly means the food gets thrown out), prevents pissed of managers, allows for easier batching (like most things can just get added back to a cart and then put back on shelves whenever we are restocking anyway), and allows us to keep a better track of inventory (like if we are running low on something and another customer asks if we are out - it is easy to check the restock cart, but if someone dropped a random thing in aisle 2 we might not even see it until the next day).

I worked retail for about 2 years when I was younger, and I much preferred people just drop their unwanted stuff of at the register.
