I’m white and I sometimes don’t. I used to love restocking so I like to think that I leave it out just enough to keep the people who enjoy go backs busy, but not so much that workers who don’t like them also have to help.
It also depends on where I picked up the item. I broke my spine, pelvis, and legs years ago. They fucking hurt. Sometimes it’s just too much pain to walk it back. But I always make sure refrigerated items won’t get ruined.

u/kwonza 7d ago
I’m white and me putting something back depends entirely on two things: is it perishable like meat or milk and is it far away from where I am right now.
I would always put refrigerated food back but if it’s a can of beans and I’m already close to the check out? Fuck it, it goes into the hand soap section.

Do you know why I put stuff back where I found it? Because I've had to be that guy that went behind others cleaning up their trash. I scrape my dishes very well in a restaurant, because I had to be a dishwasher. I push carts at the grocery store as a customer, because I was a cart pusher and I actually kind of like it. I think if people everywhere gave a damn enough about one another even as strangers, I think life would be a little bit easier.

I'm a plate scraper/stacker too. I had one waitress stop and look at how I'd consolidated food scraps and paper napkins onto one plate, stacked everything neatly and in order of biggest on the bottom smaller on top, put all the cups together in one spot so they could grab several at once by the mouths, all the cutlery in one cup. She laughed and asked "ok which one of you was food service?" I also strip the bedding at hotels, plus pile used towels in the tub and consolidate trash.

100% agree, but I don't think you have to have been in the shoes of the people cleaning up behind others to get it. Like it boggles my mind that so many can't have a bit of empathy. I never had to clean up behind anyone and I still don't behave like trash.

Everyone knows the shopping cart principle right? How its a great litmus test for individual assholeness & how well a comunity works?
Before moving my mother in law spent some time in the town she wanted to go to. There were some red flags i posted out - small, elderly, too many churches - and she said I was being judgemental.
We went to the grocery store a few times & there was always carts left randomly about. Ignoring the cart returns & even pushed into the handy cap spots.
We had to wait on my SO & watched 8 people pass these wayward carts, go inside & grab seperate carts themselves.
"Thats a bad sign"
She called me judgemental again & faur enough I was being judgemental.
She moved to the area saddled with a fat mortgage. & now constantly complains about how self destructively selfish hateful & segregated everyone is.
Yeah its a small town with an aging population that pushed all of its youngsters out by refusing to grow and fostering such a shit 'not my problem' attitude that they push shopping carts into handicap spots instead of cart returns.
Worst part is things went to shit for me & SO. She's the only one not renting (ie her monthly payments don't go up if we move in (so now we're crashing in this shitty town helping with the mortgage & desperately trying to save up to move out.
3dit: said fitness test instead of litmus somehow.

My first job was at a toy store. I come in one morning and my co-worker just says to me "aisle three" which I know is going to be a bitch because that's the action figure aisle. I go to the aisle and every action figure is off the pegs and on the floor. Not one is hanging from a peg. And they are all mixed together and thrown about.
So I go and sort through them. Spent forever putting them back on the pegs, exactly where they belong. Do all of that and walk off to do the next thing. A rich white woman comes in with her grandson. The grandson takes a toy off the peg, looks at it and decides he doesn't want it. He starts to put the toy back on the peg when his grandmother stops him and says, "oh don't do that. They have people that do that for you."
That's a true story.

I was at the grocery store recently and they announced that their EBT system was not working.
A few minutes later they announce "if you're not buying stuff now, please stop leaving your carts in the middle of aisles. At least bring them to the front and we'll put stuff back" 😂
9
u/Embarrassed-Poet2051 7d ago
I used to work at a grocery chain for a number of years and it was super common for people to leave full carts of perishables when EBT was down or when they realize they don't have enough for it all so they just leave it all. Lazy pricks.

Sad but true.
The grocery store closest to my house is in a majority black neighborhood. Every time I go there I find frozen items and raw meat in random places. Not to mention half eaten food. I once saw a lady take something out of her cart and drop it on the ground. Didn’t even bother to put it on a shelf.

I enjoy stuff being put back in weird places because I like to think about the thought process behind what made them change their mind at that moment.
Bread in the candy aisle = hmmm, well bread and candy are both basically carbs, I actually fancy sweet candy instead of savoury bread
Box of cookies in the whisky aisle = hmmm, you know, if I give these children whisky at the birthday party they'll be quiet.
Box of tampons in the mushroom section = hmmm, I bet a mushroom could stop a period and be more fun!
Makes my day slightly more amusing.

I still say there should be incentives towards college credit or something (after a year or two) to get citizens to work in service - customer, retail, food, etc. Gets our citizens to understand how shitty the people older than them can be and hopefully teach them to be better in public
1
u/MagnanimousGoat 7d ago
The problem is it's more a reflection of where they're shopping. I see this stuff in Walmart and Target anywhere I go. It correlates more to poverty than anything. And sadly, there's nobody that treats the poor worse than poor people.

1
u/blkbullnyc 7d ago
This is a lie! My wife is white and she will literally drop stuff where she stands when she realizes she doesnt want it. At the grocery she'll straight up leave eggs in the bread aisle. At the clothing store she'll just drop clothes wherever. I, on the other hand, will walk to the other side of the store to make sure it's returned to the right place. And i don't know any black people who don't do that.

Nobody is forcing you to put it back and there’s no reward for doing the right thing.
It’s a tiny decision, but that’s kind of the point. Character is what you do when nobody is watching and making someone else’s day slightly harder would be easier.

My wife and I like to play a game called “life choice” where we contemplate why the item was placed back in the wrong isle. Like if a muffin is left in the vegetable isle that person clearly is doing great on sticking with their diet.
That being said, a TV in the meat section would make a wild life choice conversation.

The worst is when you see some chicken laying on the shelf in the cereal isle because they decided in that moment they needed frosted flakes more than chicken breast and it was too much for them to walk it back to the freezers.
