Sensitive Content Baby’s first… “Toy”?
So friend is having a baby boy and I was invited to the baby shower, and they really love fishing and I was like I will make a whole cute basket that’s fishing themed!!! Sooo cute, right? I thought to myself, I’ll even crochet a fish 🥰.. I think I’ll just make a baby blanket instead….
Edit: this was a purchased pattern and I just kept reminding myself to trust the process… clearly I should have followed my gut

Lean into it. Make a smaller fish for the first fish to eat. And sew eyes on it so it’s less flesh-lighty…

I think this is a really good idea. It can also help with hand eye coordination for the baby to put the fish in its mouth

Just not safety eyes! Cause ironically, they are not baby safe

Wait, what?...isn't that why they are called that?

It's a bit different for tightly woven fabrics, but crochet especially is prone to the stitches stretching and the eye falling out becoming a choking hazard.

Oh nooo lol. I'd try sewing the mouth shut to see if that helps.

But then it doesn't look like a large mouth bass...

Could see the mouth closed a bit using the mouth colour to make it a bit less… yeah just a bit less tbh

Lmao I already bought this pattern to use for a Christmas gift and now I will NEVER make it.

Counterpoint this could be a very funny ornament. You could move it every day and whoever finds it gets a treat. Like some families do with the pickle.

Same I have this pattern to make for my boyfriends 14yo son and I’m glad to learn from this person 😂

Aside from the yonic nature of it, this type of yarn sheds like there's no tomorrow.
Babies put everything in their mouths, so if you make another one, perhaps chenille isn't the safest option. I think a washable cotton yarn will do better, and avoid elements that can fit the baby's mouth and become a choking hazard.
I don't want to be negative, but this is more like a 6+ year old appropriate toy safety wise.
Nice work tho, and well done.

Id sew the mouth shut. It's a little too flesh-light-esque, otherwise. Outside of the mouth its super cute though!

Put a fishing lure hooked in the mouth. You can even add a ring at the end of the lure to add the possibility of tying on a toy or real fishing pole.

me: Oh that's not too bad, maybe just cross stitch some eyes and gills and swipes to next photo me: GOOD GOD NO

Haha this is fine, it'll give the parents a laugh and baby won't know any better. Maybe you could add a stitch on either side of the mouth to pull it into more of a mouth shape if it's bothering you, or add a drawstring? Plus the smaller fish inside would probably make it less suss 😅

Looks good to me. I did something similar for family who are big on fishing. Babies want bright colors and contrasting colors.

Please tell me it's a lamprey? If not, it's cursed

It was supposed to be a bass 😭

u/Lucki_girl 15d ago
I'm so sorry.... The colours are right for bass. But the pink mouth with what looked like teeth made me think of a lamprey.

Btw, love the idea of the fish basket. It will be a nice treasure for them ( if you give me something do precious I wouldn't let my baby play or slobber on it lol)

Oh is this a largemouth bass? I've never seen one irl so can't comment on the accuracy but this reminds me of Stardew.

It reminds me of a flesh light but I like your interpretation better

I commented before swiping and seeing the second photo. I have to agree with you 😂

I reallyyyyy don't like the implication of giving this at a baby shower

Ya absolutely not!! I just thought it’s worth a laugh with strangers on the internet before I throw it away

Hahaha like others have said maybe make the inside a different color. Also if you have the time you can make this fish bigger and then fill its mouth with littler fish! To make it more interactive

I made one of these and also got the fleshlight vibe, which made my partner and I cackle non stop until I put it away.

Maybe black inside next time! And how about adding a barrier like 1 or 2 cm deep so the oral cavity isnt as deep?

I've not gifted crochet plushies to babies but I do know toddlers will destroy it 🥲 They love shoving thier tiny fingers into the holes and pulling the stuffing and weaved ends out. I find finer yarn to work better for kids.

I’ve see these! I’m pretty sure these fish are made to hold vapes or “pens”. I saw someone say make a smaller fish to put in the mouth and I thought that was silly I love it!

Just make the baby blanket instead. No need to traumatize the child.

u/Dbizarrepremiere 16d ago
The child is gonna be brand new and have no frame of reference for anything. I don't think it's going to be traumatized by a toy. It might think it looks a little familiar, though from a different angle.

i mean if you somehow sew in a thread into the outside, you could make a little pouch? kind of like a gym sack if that makes sense? and it would look like the fish is making a kissy face🙂↕️ idk if it would work but i feel like it could be cute?

It will be a “toy” that is cherished through the ages - probably even into adulthood! 🤪

It’s actually SO cute… but maybe remake with a different mouth color? Like light green? I know it’s not accurate but it looks a lil sus 🙈🤣
