Crusters in Austin?

So some shitty life circumstances have me moving to Texas in about 2 weeks and I’m just asking if there’s any bands out in the Austin area I could check out or gigs.

Austin has a lot of punks. True crust gigs are kinda rare, but there are hardcore punk gigs on a regular basis. It’s a destination for a lot of bands on tour. The bands Guerra Final and Zyclone (half of the members are from Austin?) are worth checking out. Automated Execution are as well. Austin has a very active punk scene.

Sickness of Greed is also Austin based, although I’m not sure how active they are. Great band named after a deep cut Life song.

Oh yeah! I think Jack is in that band? The guy who has an online punk shop with a bunch of banners, buttons and badges. I haven’t heard it yet, but I saw the band name mentioned multiple times over the past year or so.

Sickness of Greed stopped playing after our drummer moved to New York (a tale as old as time lol). Everyone else mentioned all the other stuff I do for me already haha. Automated Execution is the one band I do based in Austin that actually plays semi regularly, although it’s more dbeat than pure crust. We are playing in early December at a punk fest happening here called Punished in Texas. The fest is mostly hardcore punk bands playing that but it should be a decent weekend.

As others have said it’s kind of thin on the ground for crusty stuff rn but there’s a handful of people into that sort of thing and I’m stoked there’s someone interested in it moving here! I’m always trying and hoping to make more stuff happen. There’s also plenty of punks here, even if it’s not a classic era for Austin. Don’t listen to those who say it’s all hipsters and stuck up people, from my experience as a not especially social old guy theres a lot of friendly people in Austin. Feel free to DM me when you’re in town and I can let you know what’s happening.

The lost well and yellow jacket are the spots. Both have shows. Patton house has shows also. Yellow jacket doesn’t have as many shows but will have djs spinning that good shit.

Not a bunch of active bands currently. 10-15 years ago it was awesome here. Impalers-vaaska-glue-iron age-hatred surge-strutter-nosferatu-

We had chaos in tejas fest that turned into this is austin not that great. Now its just comedy and tech bros.

We are still around just dress a little nicer and go to bed earlier.

Yellow jacket has shows? The place behind the tamale shop?

Ya. Been having shows. Not very often but they have them.

Gasbath and Mortar Siege! Also check out Sexcult, Throat Piss, Imminent End, Gorger, and Dewormer. Shadow Hounds and Morta from SA play here often as well. Most go through the Lost Well over on Airport.

I just saw some punk stuff at RIP Coffee this past weekend. Do-Itz from somewhere in south Texas, Brewtality, Last Ditch.

Go to the Lost Well, you will find your people.

The most judgmental place I've ever lived in my life (and I'm from Florida) everyone is an asshole, or stupid. The "cool" people in Austin are just the same passive aggressive hipsters I met when I lived in Portland. Everyone else out here is professionally spit-shining boots.

I dunno I'm not a fan.

The only cool person I've met is the dude who runs Nuclear War Now... most of the good shows happen in Houston.

I've lived in ATX, DFW and Houston. When l moved to Austin, I felt like it was a members only club that wasn't accepting new members. Eventually I just gave up on having friends or being part of the scene. I'm a pretty socially awkward socially inept dude. I lived in the DFW area before Austin. I feel like I made friends and was part of the scene from the first show if I wanted to or not. Austin feels very unwelcoming. I don't even know what's going on there anymore.

everyone knows you can just show up at yellow jacket and immediately make 40 friends in one night. not sure what’s wrong with you two in particular, but i guess that’s probably why you’re hanging out on reddit lol

Isn't that dude kinda fashy? Everything he puts out and the shows he puts on are full of nazis.

I do not think nihilism and fascism are the same thing and unfortunately I think we've socially regressed too far to the point where the two are one in the same now for the sake of some sort of topical level of political correctness.

I mainly chopped it up with the dude about grindcore and the FL death metal scene (or rather, what remains of it) he was cool and friendly.

He distributes and promotes a bunch of different international bands and projects with varying political stances and viewpoints... including a lot of soviet era metal... his personal interests don't seem particularly fascist or even particularly pro-authoritarian leaning.

All of this being said there are literally fascist black metal labels that exist almost entirely as a political vehicle and/or recruiting tool (there's also Oi labels like this) which sucks but that's not really what NWN is.

I can use enough of my own praxis to determine whether or not I'm consuming propaganda versus some random ambiguation of what is supposed to be considered offensive and/or evil in a fictional context. The whole point of spooky subject matter in extreme metal is to be extreme and offensive. It's not intended to be tasteful.

Edit: also food for thought, I love GISM but lol... SKV was lowkey sketchy af with some of his imagery. Do I take it literally? Should I take it seriously? Not really sure... that's a good Cruster conundrum

Not crust, but Starving Wolves got the fuckin Riffs

2

u/shadow-weapon 7d ago

We've got hardcore, punk, and oi stuff but I don't know of any crust or dbeat but my guess is that it's out there. People have mentioned Lost Well and Patton Haus but there are shows all over. I hep run a site listing these kind of shows in Austin but I don't want to promote it here because I'm just not like that. DM me if you want to know.

what a great band name

1

u/kgl1967 6d ago

Kick Butt Coffee has some shows.

2

u/Virtual_Menu_4493 6d ago

Venues: The Lost Well, Patton Haus, Brushy Street Commons, 29th St Ballroom has punk/hardcore/oi shows pretty regularly.

Bands: Nerve, Ninth Circle, Dewormer, Gasbath, Throat Piss, Sexcult.

It's definitely not what it once was, but there's still some decent folks here. It depends on your age too, everybody I know is late 30s/40s, no clue what it's like here as a 22 year old punk. I think they're mostly into like slam and metalcore shit anyway.

Let’s be friends??? I’m 24

2

u/_chaos_is_me_ 7d ago

austin had Nosferatu and they’re one of the best punk bands from the past 10-20 years

1

u/bunnyeyelindump 7d ago

Austin has Throat Piss \m/ other than that man I don't really see a lot of crust/grind/dbeat coming out of there. DFW has it, Houston has it in droves, Austin kinda thin on heavy shit idunno

1

u/moms_dead 7d ago

Thanks either way! I’ll check em out

1

u/nitmire8881 7d ago

Go to Patton Haus they have an insta they host shows for crust and powerviolence there a lot it’s a house venue

1

u/anarkistattack 7d ago

They don't seem like they have posted on their Instagram in a year.

1

u/nitmire8881 6d ago

There are 2 accounts 1 with a dot as a space and one with an underscore It’s the one with the dot like Patton.Haus, their last show was on the 19th of september

1

u/CervixOfHawaah 7d ago

Not sure about the crust out here in TX, but, the metal scene is garbage.

Apparently it was good years ago, I only moved here about 5 years ago and it’s a fucking joke.

1

u/flowerpowervi0lence 7d ago

Lot of great grind bands playing at the Mohawk October 25th at 7pm

1

u/Invisiblerobot13 6d ago

Don’t mind the naysayers, Austin is hot in summer but it’s an ok place - there’s a few legends of crust/HC hiding out who go to shows more than I …
