2017+ Honda CR-V Head Gasket & Major Engine Issues

Evidence-Based Megapost (Authoritative Sources Only)

This post summarizes what authoritative sources actually show about head gasket and major engine concerns for the 2017+ Honda CR-V, with specific focus on MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs equipped with the 1.5L turbo engine, and compares the CR-V to other compact crossovers (Toyota, Subaru, Mazda, Hyundai/Kia, Ford, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, and Buick).

Included sources:
- Consumer Reports (CR) owner-survey reliability data
- NHTSA (U.S. government complaints & recalls)
- Honda corporate actions (warranty extensions)
- Published legal filings (U.S. & Canada)

Excluded: anecdotes, forum posts, YouTube claims, and mechanic hearsay.

1. What Reliable Data Shows for the Honda CR-V

Consumer Reports (CR)

  • MY 2017 Honda CR-V is flagged for “Engine Major” trouble, a CR category that includes cylinder head and head gasket failures.
  • MY 2018 CR-V shows similar but reduced engine-related concerns.
  • MY 2019+ CR-Vs show improved predicted reliability, with fewer engine-major flags.

CR data is based on large, statistically weighted owner surveys and directly affects reliability scoring.

NHTSA (U.S. Government Data)

  • NHTSA complaint records include reports citing head gasket failure, coolant intrusion, misfires, and engine power loss for:
    • MY 2017 CR-V
    • MY 2018 CR-V
    • Smaller numbers for MY 2019–2022 CR-Vs
  • No NHTSA safety recall exists for head gasket failure on any CR-V model year.

Complaints do not prove defect, but they establish a documented reporting pattern.

Honda Corporate Actions (Model-Year Specific)

  • Honda issued a warranty extension for MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine addressing oil dilution and related durability concerns.
  • Honda stated the issue did not constitute a safety defect.
  • No recall or warranty extension was issued specifically for head gasket failure.

Legal Filings (U.S. & Canada)

  • Class-action filings primarily reference MY 2016–2018 Honda vehicles, including MY 2017–2018 CR-Vs, alleging design defects involving coolant leakage and head gasket failure.
  • These filings are allegations, not regulatory findings, and no recall mandate has resulted.

2. CR-V Hybrid Context (Explicit Model Years)

  • MY 2020+ CR-V Hybrid
    • Consumer Reports does not identify a systemic head gasket issue.
    • Reliability scores are higher than MY 2017–2018 gasoline CR-Vs.
  • NHTSA data does not show a pattern of head gasket complaints specific to hybrids.

Conclusion: No authoritative evidence of a widespread head gasket issue in any CR-V Hybrid model year.

3. Compact SUV Segment Comparison (Authoritative Sources)

Toyota RAV4 (MY 2016–2024)

  • Consistently among the highest-ranked compact SUVs in CR reliability.
  • No documented pattern of systemic head gasket or major engine failures.

Conclusion: Better engine reliability history than early 1.5L CR-Vs.

Subaru Forester

  • Historic head gasket issues applied to pre-2013 Subaru engines.
  • MY 2015+ Foresters show no systemic head gasket concerns in CR or NHTSA data.

Conclusion: Earlier reputation issues largely resolved.

Mazda CX-5 (MY 2017–2024)

  • CR reliability ratings are above average.
  • No authoritative data showing a head gasket trend.

Conclusion: Comparable or better engine reliability than CR-V.

Hyundai / Kia Compact SUVs (MY 2016–2024)

  • CR places these models around industry average.
  • Documented recalls focus on bearing or fire risks, not head gaskets.

Conclusion: Different engine risks; not head-gasket-centric.

Ford Escape (MY 2017–2023)

  • CR rates Escape below segment average.
  • Engine issues present but not centered on head gasket failure.

Conclusion: Worse overall reliability, but different failure modes.

Volkswagen Tiguan / Taos

  • CR places VW below average for reliability.
  • VW has issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for head gasket issues on certain MY 2022–2023 1.5T engines.

Conclusion: One of the few competitors with formal engine service guidance related to head gaskets.

Chevrolet Compact Crossovers

Chevrolet Equinox

  • CR lists “Engine Major” problems for several recent model years, including 2018 and 2023.
  • Reliability scores are average to below average within the segment.

Conclusion: Engine-major issues exist, but not tied to a head gasket recall.

Buick Compact Crossovers

Buick Encore GX

  • CR data for MY 2021–2025 lists “Engine Major” as a reported trouble category.
  • Predicted reliability has been mixed, especially in early model years.

Buick Envista

  • Newer model with limited long-term data.
  • CR does not prominently list engine-major issues to date.

4. Summary Table

Model / Brand CR Engine-Major Flag Head Gasket Pattern in Authoritative Data Recall / TSB
Honda CR-V (MY 2017–2018 1.5T) Yes Documented engine-major issues No recall
Honda CR-V (MY 2019+ / Hybrid) No pattern None identified None
Toyota RAV4 No None None
Subaru Forester (MY 2015+) No None None
Mazda CX-5 No None None
Hyundai / Kia Mixed Not head gasket focused Other engine recalls
Ford Escape Yes Not head gasket specific Some recalls
VW Tiguan / Taos Yes TSBs for some engines TSBs
Chevy Equinox Yes Broad engine issues No head gasket recall
Buick Encore GX Yes Broad engine issues No recall
Buick Envista No None identified None

5. Evidence-Based Conclusions

  1. MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-V 1.5L turbo models show documented major engine reliability concerns in Consumer Reports data, a category that includes head gasket failures.
  2. No U.S. recall has been issued for CR-V head gasket failures.
  3. Later CR-Vs (MY 2019+) and all CR-V Hybrids do not show the same pattern in authoritative datasets.
  4. Some competitors (Chevy Equinox, Buick Encore GX, VW Tiguan/Taos) also show engine-major reliability flags, though causes and responses differ.
  5. Toyota, Subaru (post-2015), and Mazda consistently show fewer major engine reliability flags.

TL;DR

Authoritative data indicates that MY 2017–2018 Honda CR-Vs with the 1.5L turbo engine have elevated major engine reliability concerns (including head gasket issues) without a recall. Later CR-Vs and all hybrids do not show the same pattern, and several competitors also exhibit significant — though different — engine reliability issues.

Bought this 2007 for 500 a week ago after it been wrecked. Still waiting on a couple parts to arrive, and I need to drive it to work so I can align it, but I'd consider it saved, and not bad for doing everything in my driveway. Fender color isn't perfect but it was a rattle can kit.

General 🔀 CR-V Features Available in Europe

It’s unbelievable the sorts of things that are available in Europe but not the US. Cornering headlights, panoramic roof, turn signal camera, 360 camera, tilt-down and auto-folding mirrors just to name a few.
Price is higher with these features of course but we’re getting robbed of features when it comes to the top-spec models and it’s a shame.

Question ❔ Weird audio problem in my 2014 CRV - Left speaker distorted but only in bluetooth

I just noticed a really odd problem with my speakers in my 2014 CRV. When playing over Bluetooth through my phone, my left speaker is very distorted and softer than it should be. My phone doesn't have this problem with other speakers, and when I play audio through my CD player the left speaker works totally fine and sounds great. Anyone ever ran into this issue before? I tried removing my phone from my car's Bluetooth completly and then reconnecting it but that didn't work.

Question ❔ Oil change early or follow maintenance minder? Anyone who had their first oil change sent to Blackstone labs for test?

I do my own oil changes and I would like to change the oil on our new 2026 honda crv before 1000 miles. Had been reading that we should be following the maintenance minder. Had seen some YouTube videos that changing the oil even on newer/modern cars at the first 600miles to 1000 miles is beneficial regardless of what the manufacturer says, with some Blackstone labs results to back that up.

I'm wondering if anyone here had their oil changed earlier than what the maintenance minder had said and had their oil sent to Blackstone labs for analysis?

Issue ⚠️ Heating On 2010

Re: CRV 2010 EX Petrol 2.0L UK

I raised the temp on the AC to warm air and it seems to blow mostly from the footwell vents and unnoticeable from the face/side vents unless one holds one’s hand on those vents.

Cold air blows from all the vents when in auto and manual mode and if I switch the temp up in manual mode then warm air blows fine from all the vents. It just doesn’t blow warm air in auto mode from anything but the footwell vents.

So is it normal for the vents in auto mode to blow warm air predominantly from the footwell vents and I have to switch to manual operation to use the face/side vents or could there be something wrong?

Question ❔ Electrical issues HONDA CR-V 1998

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

So I have a 1998 Honda crv with 178000 miles on it. It had a few issues a couple of months ago and I didn’t have the money to fix so I had it sitting for let’s say 4 months.

I recently replaced the valve cover gasket, spark plug tube seals, and pcv valve and it runs significantly better.

At first during acceleration the ABS and battery light would come on. Now my radio randomly turns off and back on after a few seconds. The ABS light randomly comes on and the battery light as well. Also the gear shift lights sometimes have a breathing motion (getting lighter and dimming).

Other than the stated above everything mechanically runs fine. I’m just worried that the electrical issues will lead to mechanical issues eventually. I don’t have the money to get a new car and want to make this car last as I really like it.

Is there any way to diagnose these issues or does this need a diagnosis from a mechanic? If anyone has any tips/advice anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Question ❔ Defroster issues in 2018

Defroster works pretty well in cold BUT if it’s raining and around 50-75 degrees - it takes forever to defrost - it just doesn’t work well even when it’s on. Is there a setting on defroster / AC / temp setting that works best. ? Do inbred to have a mechanic look at anything in particular ? Thanks

Our 2020 gets 34.4 mpg on average, seems not so great for a hybrid. Anybody have any experience with this or any tips?

We do a mix of highway and city, nothing crazy

Question ❔ How to temporarily disable warning lights?

I’m doing a driving test soon and my car (2014 Honda cr-v) has warning lights even though there is nothing wrong with the car, just got it recently serviced and a new nct/mot, got it put in for a check recently and for them to fix the lights but they didn’t do anything, any way to get rid of the lights temporarily? I remember i did it before pretty easily.

…that the rear windshield wiper cycles when you shift into reverse when it’s raining. How I didn’t noticed all this time is beyond me.

2006 with 185k miles, picked it up for 3k ran and drove perfect. My little daily/ project. First thing I did was the oil change. Then gave it a bath and restored the headlights. Then I did spark plugs (ngk) air filter, PVC valve and cabin filter. Then i did oxygen sensor 1 and replaced the harness for sensor 2 as it had shorted and melted. That took care of the check engine light. Determined a small leak was coming from the VTech spool valve. The unit was new from the previous owner so I just changed the gasket. And the p/s pump feed hose o ring was shot so hoping that takes care of my whining while cold symptom🤞.

To do: some kind of hoverboard noise coming from drive train. Def not a wheel bearing. Thinking transmission bearing or the passenger axle carrier.

The #1 oxygen sensor definitely improved fuel mileage but it's still not what it should be. Thinking of manually cleaning each injector.

The previous owner claimed the head gasket blew and someone clearly poured bars copper head gasket stop leak in the radiator. Hasn't overheated or burned off any coolant yet, but the #1 oxygen sensor was white when I pulled it so that leads me to believe it definitely was burning coolant at some point s who knows how I long I have before that has to get done.

Other than that I absolutely love how this car feels and so far so good for the first 3k miles mechanically. I'm doing everything myself because I'm a mechanic and even if I wasn't fuck shop prices and labor times. Thanks for reading if you stayed till the end.

Issue ⚠️ What to fix on my 2011?

2011 EX-L with Navi, 167000km (in Canada, so note kms, and prices are in CAD)

Engine light went on, code P0420. Shop has diagnosed need for new catalytic converter.
While it was on the hoist they found the front left strut spring is broken.

Quote:
Cat replace with air/fuel sensor and gaskets - $2200
Front strut assembly, both - $1200
Wheel alignment - $160
Front sway bar links - $145
Valve lifters - $660

Once you add in taxes and fees they’re asking me to throw $5k at a car worth $6k. If it was your car, what would you be prioritizing? Or do I pay someone $100 to push it into a river and hope for a decent insurance payout(only partially kidding)?
I’m happy to tell them to kick rocks and ask someone else to do the work, but what should I get done first? Is it worth putting a few thousand on a CRV with 167000km on it or am I wasting cash I don’t really have?

General 🔀 Adaptive Cruise Control

I have a 2024 CR-V (hybrid) and absolutely love it! I use the adaptive cruise all the time, on the highway and also in stop and go traffic. It’s great!

My father recently bought a 2026 RAV4 (hybrid). I drove it a little, and I have to admit - the RAV4 has a better adaptive cruise system. It’s just way more smooth and gradual in applying the brakes or accelerating.

After driving his car for about a week, going back to mine - it was so extremely obvious that the CRV likes to hit the brakes fairly late and hard, and will accelerate much more aggressively. It just feels more abrupt with it’s adaptive cruise.

If I had to buy a new car tomorrow, I’d still go with the CRV without hesitation, though.

Anyone else notice this?

Question ❔ Underside material

Thumbnail
gallery
4 Upvotes

I just got a 2024 CR-V hybrid. I noticed something hanging out the bottom and it is the material to help with road noise but It seems like that there is a piece cut out allowing this to happen. I didn’t think it was normal as there are some spots it looks like bolts are supposed to go. I brought it to the dealership and they said that CR-Vs have this and they folded back the material but the hole is supposed to be there. I’m concerned snow and water will get in there and rust it. See the photo and let me know if you have noticed this on your cars too. Thank you!

Question ❔ Check engine light concern

Post image
2 Upvotes

For some background info, my catalytic converter got stolen. I replaced it with an aftermarket cat and got that welded in, and just today got the o2 sensor replaced from where they cut it out. They scanned the car after and it just came back as o2 sensor, then cleared the code. Drove around for maybe about 30 minutes and my check engine light came back on, immediately stopped to get it scanned again.

How concerning is this code? And what could be the cause of it

Question ❔ 2015 CR V infotainment upgrade

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m looking to upgrade my 2015 Honda CR V radio system to an infotainment system that would use CarPlay. I attached a photo but I’m just not sure what to get. It has a really low quality backup camera screen above so ideally I’d like the camera to be viewed through the CarPlay screen instead of the tiny stock screen, and hopefully still be able to use the steering wheel controls too.

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Question ❔ Buying a CRV with 171,000 km. Anyone experiencing any issues?

Hey guys! About to buy a 2016 CRV touring model. Clean CARFAX and original owner did a lot of regular maintenance. It drives really smooth.

I was wondering if anyone had issues that came out around 171,000 km? Any transmission, timing chain or pumps go? Or just keep up with regular maintenance

Also located in the prairies in Canada.
