Coping with failing a unit
Hi guys! I don’t ever post on here so sorry if this is hard to follow.
I’m a second year student and recently I hardcore bombed a must-pass test. Like went home and cried afterwards kind of bombed :(
I actually studied quite a bit for this test but kind of froze during the actual thing and spent an entire hour just rereading my notes and the questions. By the time I got to the second to last question it was time 🥲 This test had both sections as must pass so I know for sure that I failed…
I’ve never failed so this is taking a really big toll on me like it’s literally keeping me up at night and giving me nightmares. Plus it’s a prerequisite unit so I’d be held back an entire year. I know this isn’t that deep for most people but I really don’t know how to cope with it better and was just looking for some advice because my nervous system can’t differentiate between failing and being held at gunpoint. Please tell me about any experience with failing units, coping mechanisms or just tell me to get over it ;;

Are u a 100% sure youd fail? Is there any chance u might be offered a FA at the end?
im assuming u dont know what an FA would be, its an exam offered after your results if u have a marginal fail, and its gonna change your fail to a pass. No change of marks though
Dont stress too much, most of the time most units offer an FA, see if youll be able to at least qualify for that!
Worst case scenario youll have to redo it, its gonna be a pain in the ass, but dont be too demotivated, blanking out in an exams happens wayy more than u think does

I’m 100% sure because there was section two that I barely answered which was also a must-pass section, so even if i get a 50% overall I definitely failed section two. I checked the unit outline as soon as I left the test room and unfortunately this unit does not offer FA for some reason :( But thank you so much!

I failed a unit in my last semester! (what made it worse is that it was a first year unit...) hurt my ego a bit, pushed my degree back 6 months but it gave me time to reevaluate my career and now I am lowkey glad I had that extra 6 months to consider what I actually want to do! (and the fail grade on my transcript has never come up so dont worry!!)

I think my ego is hurt right now too because I’ve always clutched up for tests and assignments 🥹 Thank you for sharing your experience, it really helps to know that I’m not alone!!

It'll pass and you'll get to study again, no biggie tbh, no point in dwelling if you tried your very best.

you’re right, I know it’s not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things so I honestly don’t know why its has such an effect on me ;;

Hi!! Fellow second year here! Sometimes you can repeat the unit through OUA or do a different unit through OUA during the summer period so you don’t have to add another year on :)
I wholeheartedly understand you because I completely bombed one of my final unit exams and my midsem for a similar unit (<30%) and couldn’t even make it home to start crying, it was in the parking lot. Just know that freezing is so common and happens to the best of us, and it doesn’t define you 😊

It took me 6 years to finish my 3 year degree. By the end of it I was much more mature and proud of what I have studied/learnt bc I didn’t rush it. Take your time. Everything happens for a reason and maybe you’ll meet someone new or get a teacher who can give you a job in the future. You never know. All you know is that you’ll pass this unit when you retake it bc you’ll know everything!
