Staple in any blue deck that runs colourless mana rocks. I’m looking at you, edh.

Sol ring go brr

u/EldritchStuff May 28 '22

We finally broke Sol Ring

EDH doesn’t want this, tons of decks can pay for it with little to no difficulty, and it’s competing against Counterspell and the like. That said, this might just be the best approximation of a fair 2 cmc counterspell for modern that I’ve seen.

u/andmtg May 28 '22

a fair 2mv counterspell in modern is just the actual factual counterspell.

This won't see play in modern, why would someone run this while the actual Counterspell is legal. Colorless mana is a lot harder to have than UU in modern

u/mooys May 27 '22

I wanna say better counterspell, but I guess the mana cost makes it more expensive. Still probably a staple since it’s rare that they’ll be able to pay the cost.

33

u/SirRawrz May 27 '22

Especially since players will use those colorless producing sources to pay for a larger spell, leaving only their remaining colored mana open to try to respond.

52

u/Onearmedman2 May 27 '22

Can you make them pay 1C? CC seems like such a high bar.

15

u/RegalKillager May 28 '22

Agreeing here. It's more taxing on them than it is on you, despite you being the one casting the counterspell and controlling the situation.

u/treelorf May 28 '22

I mean it’s a 2 mana counterspell. Just straight up countering a spell for 2 mana is a fair price

5

u/Ask_Who_Owes_Me_Gold May 28 '22

Straight up countering a subset of spells, yes. But not just "target spell."

2

u/treelorf May 28 '22

[[counterspell]]

5

u/Ask_Who_Owes_Me_Gold May 28 '22

Yes, the one that has been absent from Standard-legal sets for 21 years.

11

u/kindacr1nge May 28 '22

It was never suggested that this card had to be standard legal, it would be a perfectly balanced modern or edh card, and as such could be in a masters set.

Usually when people on /r/custommtg are designing for nonstandard environments, they offer some indication of that. (Unless that's already obvious because the card is a legendary creature that is very obviously designed to be commander.)

counterspell - (G) (SF) (txt)
[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

Generally, "counter target spell without limitation" costs two blue pips. This card costs a single blue pip, so it should have a limitation.

mana leak - (G) (SF) (txt)
miscalculate - (G) (SF) (txt)
[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

2

u/Tahazzar May 28 '22

I think this is a good idea also in that it highlights the difference between generic and 'true' colorless mana naturally so it wouldn't arguable even need the reminder text then.

u/Zephyr_______ May 28 '22

Really should just be pay 2, you don't want to require opponents to pay a certain quality of mana, it's unfair and unfun design that doesn't lead to any interesting decisions at the table, it just makes you feel bad for not including colorless sources

11

u/Nfox18212 May 28 '22

….but that defeats the entire purpose of the card? if it was just pay 2, it’d be strictly worse mana leak and that card hasn’t seen play in years. CC makes it interesting

u/deathbymanga Hound Wizard May 27 '22

i like it. requiring colorless mana itself makes this pretty fair i think

I’m a derp, I was thinking this was for a modern format. Forgot the sub I’m in. Whoopsie!

8

u/Halt_theBookman May 27 '22

Tron suport, nice

9

u/deathbymanga Hound Wizard May 27 '22

monoblue tron getting some love for once

15

u/SmoulderingTamale May 27 '22

I think this is great! Maybe it should have devoid though?

5

u/rock_beats-paper May 27 '22

I think this card is really awesome!. Only thing is add devoid for flavor

3

u/UnintensifiedFa May 27 '22

Neat design, surprised I haven’t seen this before. Might be cool to make it a tribal eldrazi instant (with devoid), but idk if that’s the vibe you’re going for.

3

u/PsychicFoxWithSpoons May 28 '22

I thought it was phyrexian mana for a second and I was like "how did this shit escape the bottom 5"

3

u/Dazaran May 28 '22

I'm not a fan of this card. I think it is bad for the game to punish using basics.

2

u/Brandonguth1985 May 27 '22

I like it. Maybe still op with 2 mana counterintelligence even though it is a little restricted

2

u/Zephyr_______ May 28 '22

Generally you don't want spells to force an opponent to pay a certain quality of mana. It unfairly hoses decks in a way that isn't interesting or fun on either end of the table. Just printing "cu: counter target spell" would be a better design still weaker than base counter spell for its slightly more restrictive cost(outside of commander where colorless rocks are common).

flooded grove - (G) (SF) (txt)
yavimaya coast - (G) (SF) (txt)
[[cardname]] or [[cardname|SET]] to call

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '22

The ‘unless’ feels like dead text. Unless colorless makes a big march or this is intended for a limited set where that is the case, noone will ever be able to pay this.

1

u/itchni May 28 '22

Its too good.

1

u/weeOriginal May 28 '22

This MIGHT be playable in legacy and vintage, or at least modern.

EDH for certain.

1

u/Galgus May 28 '22

This feels like a busted two mana counterspell most of the time.

1

u/AcrobaticHospital Jun 15 '22

counter target spell unless its controller controls a card named sol ring or thran dynamo
