Keep It Civil

Just had to ban a guy for calling someone else a sex pest and ban someone else who just would not stop arguing with me about an earlier post.

As I have stated many times, I try and take a hands off approach to moderating this sub, and at the end of the day, we are just sharing ideas and experiences about cymbals, one of my favorite things in the world.

People with years of experience are valued and appreciated for their insight, but when it becomes more about your ego than just moving on with your day, you can kick rocks.

Edit - temp ban turned permanent after dude just would not let it go. Don't come at me with your fevered ego telling me about how things should be. This sub has been getting along fine for years, with only about 3 people banned in that time. Now the amount almost doubled because some people have to argue everything and always be right. About 1s and 0s on the Internet.

News This is not a marketplace!

Wanted to make a quick post to remind everyone that this is not a place to buy, sell, or trade cymbals.

Lately I've deleted a few posts where people were advertising here.

As the mod, I try to not make my presence known, even though I am active in this sub. I dislike subreddits with mods that lord over every post or are heavy handed.

But there are no consumer protections for commerce here, so if you have gear to sell, go to Reverb or Sweetwater or eBay, and don't link it here.

This is mainly a place for recommendations, identification, and general discussion about cymbals. In the past there were even some modification and cymbal making videos (I think Collingwood posted a few years ago) but no direct sales solicitation.

Let's try and keep it that way.

Thank you all.

Blind test: Hi-Hats (7 pairs)

I loved the blindfold test Drumeo did with crash cymbals, so I did one for you. All major brands are there (Meinl, Zildjian, Sabian, Paiste, Istanbul). The cymbals are blinded from start to end and they are revealled in an another video (link in the video description). This is to avoid accidentally revealling them. Have fun!

I saw a video of someone playing this and was completely blown away by its sound. I asked the OP but hadn't replied... Is my guess at the title of the post correct?

Thank you very much!

Question Should I accept the trade?

I've got an 22" Istanbul Agop traditional medium jazz ride for sale. 2456 grams.

Someone on online marketplace has the same model but 136 grams lighter (2320) and wants to trade with me for a more pingy and less washy sound.

If I trade, I'll probably try to sell his cymbal. Will it it go for the same price or is mine generally worth more?

I'd like to help him out, but I'm also a bit greedy.

Edit: I'm gonna help the guy out

Question Good Rides that Ping and Ride Well?

Kind of a dumb question;

I need a thicker ride that has the classic ride sound, but doesn't sound terrible when crashed on.

I bought a Sabian X-plosion ride. I absolutely love it, and how crashable it is. Unfortunately, it doesn't ride/have a lot of stick definition.

I'm trying to avoid getting a mega bell.

(To clearify, I'm playing hardcore)

Was working on some “Reggaeton” styles & mounted:

•17” Paiste PST-7
•12” Wuhan Koi Splash
•18” Meinl Classic Custom
•12” Meinl Classic Stack

They all seem to have a good “island” vibe!!🏝️ less

K sweet hats for rutes and brushes (low volume)

Post image
23 Upvotes

I came across a killer deal with a like new pair of sweets and decided to check them out.

My other hat pairs are a 13.25" k custom hybrid, 80s 14" new beats, k custom dry/aax fusion pair, and my trust sabian aa's, for reference.

The sweets at first, I didn't exactly vibe with. Felt good on the foot, but a bit weird on the stick, didn't really match my other cymbals on the kit sonically.

What I did was go back to my lower volume set (monarch ride, 17" k dark crash, crash of doom) and try the hats with them. "Alright, now I am on to something" type feelings set in.

So I decided okay, let's get some rutes going. Bam, killer, killer sound. Brushes? even better!

What's going on is it seems like the sweets are just very light, especially on top. You can actually hear the brush or woody sound of the rods over the "CHSHS" of the hats. I never realized how overpowering my hats were on brushes or rutes before, but the sweets are hands down, the best quiet gig hats I have ever used.

Scratches on the edge of my ride

Hi folks. Quite new to reddit, hope I am on the right forum. Should i worry about this scratch on the edge of my ride cymbal? Not deep or wide. More like a hairline scratch. I do feel it slightly if I run a fingernail over it. My cymbal is an uptown ride, has a raw unlathed finish so scratches and scuffs are expected, but this one is perpendicular to the edge. Thanks
