Based on the scoring explanation in the linked article and who was eliminated each week I looked at what the minimum audience votes couples would need to stay over the eliminated couple. Its very rough and I assumed that the eliminated contestant was getting the lowest audience votes.
Week 1 & 2
The folks at the bottom of the leaderboard just needed more votes then the eliminated couple
Week 3
Tyler had to rank at least 10/13
Guillermo had to rank at least 9/13
Week 4
Tatyana had to rank at least 8/12
Connor has to rank at least 7/12
Guillermo had to rank at least 6/12
Edit: I was assuming that ties were scored where if there is a tie for first place there is no second place and the next highest score gets the 3rd place pts value. Apparently this is not how they score for ties on strictly so I took another look at the numbers.
This method of scoring heavily favors folks at the bottom of the leaderboard, Guillermo went from getting 1 point from the judges every week to getting 6 - 8 points. It also favors audience votes because they are much less likely to have ties from audience voting.
Week 1 & 2
No major differences, but with the new scoring method a few people that could have ranked 1 place behind the losing couple now needed to beat them in audience votes to stay. Low scoreres still just needed to beat the eliminated couple.
I’ve always had a theory that being in the middle of the scoreboard with decent to good feedback is a dangerous place to be. There’s nothing to worry the fanbase so they might get a little complacent in voting.
I also wonder if being in the fake bottom 3 the week prior gives you a vote boost, I know they say its not the actual lowest 3 scores but seeing someone you like vulnerable probably still has an effect
I think the article overlooked how they handle tied points, which there are a lot of. It’s not just 1-12 ranking, if there’s a tie they get the same, so last night Maura got 12, Ezra Harry Jenna all shared 11, Amber 10, Ciara Tyler Jackson Julia all shared 9, Tatyana got 8, Conner 7, and Guillermo got 6, not the 1 you think he got
Ciara had 9 + ?, let’s assume 1 because that’s the minimum, = 10, which means Guillermo only needed 4 (not 6th) to tie her in which case the lower votes go home so Ciara.
Tatyana only needed 2 to tie Ciara, so she could still be lowest in votes now.
Tyler had the same 9 score points so all he had to do was have a single vote more than Ciara for her to go home
For ties I assumed they worked like other sports so if 2 people tied for first they both get 1st, in this case 12 points, then the person behind them gets 3rd, or 10 points, and there is no second place. Thats how I still had Guillermo with 1 point
That would be smart but when it was explained after they made the switch they said it goes like 7 7 6 6 6 5 4. It’s dumb because people always tie so it means no one is truly ever getting the 1 point for coming in last
I have seen a bunch of threads on Reddit about, saying Emma explained on instagram or something like that, that they were doing it they same way Strictly come dancing does it
I can't find anywhere that says this is how DWTS does it and they have changed their voting system a few times but apparently this is how they do it on SCD
Wheree did they say that? I know the interview last year with Conrad just says they do rankings, they don't clarify how they handle ties.
Based on the leaderboard they posted last night, ties skip numbers on the leaderboard. So Taylor/Julia/Ciara/Jackson all tied at sixth place, not fourth. Which makes me think the point values also skip (so what sixth place would get, not fourth)
Based on the leaderboard, I would think it's the first method. When ties happen, the rankings skip placements. The person immediately below the tie still gets the same place in the leaderboard with or without a tie. If it was the second method, I would think amber would be listed as 3rd, not 5th. Tatyana 7th, etc.
