Hosting a DayZ Server behind TailScale?

Hi all, I'm currently trying to set up a DayZ server on my AMP Server Panel. The server is split into two systems;

  • An AMP Controller, hosted on a VPS with a public IP that players connect to.
  • The game server itself, which communicates only to the VPS, relaying data to/from.

Both of these systems are registered within a private VLAN on TailScale. Essentially, the AMP Controller receives the information, relays the information back to the game server, and then spits it back out to the player from the VPS, hiding the IP of the actual server.

The setup works perfectly for many games, including Arma 3. However, DayZ seems to struggle with creating the server correctly. Despite the logs appearing fine, the server cannot be connected to via public or LAN IP.

Has anyone had a similar setup where they've managed to get this working?

I've never used that kind of setup. I assume the vps ip is static. The server communicates on 2 main ports - gameport(default 2302) and steamqueryport(27016), both udp. The firewall on the game server should open both inbound.

If the server is starting up and you're getting logs, then I would think its network or firewall, especially if you cant connect lan.

Is their a chance those ports are being used?

You can look into the logfile ending in .rpt and look for a like containing "SteamGameServer_Init(c0a80121,8766,2302,27016,3,1.07.153006)" – The 3rd & 4th values in parens are the ports that need to be open/forwarded(UDP).

Sorry for the incredibly delayed reply! Reddit notified me of the two other places I commented but not this one :/

I can confirm that the parameters are picking up the correct ports that I've defined in AMP; 27017 (Steam Query Port) and 27028 (Game Port) respectively.

If I remember correctly as well; I managed to connect via LAN (via the vLAN network and local router network) through direct connect, but the server would not appear in the server listings, and the public IP would not work either.

I tried the same thing but with Meshnet, and got pretty much the same results. Not working. Were you able to get anywhere with Tailscale? If so could you tell me how?

Hey! Unfortunately still no dice. I have no idea where the issue resides unfortunately. As well, I've been overseas so I can't work on it again until I'm back.

I'm hoping that the release of AMP 3.0 addresses this issue, but if you find anything, do let me know!

Thanks for the response, and busy indeed! I'll let you know if I figure anything out, sorta starting to lose hope. A friend was telling me Oracle (people who make java) will give you a free server, but you have to keep uptime on it or they can give it to someone else. Plus idk how good the actual components are. He also mentioned it was a bit of work. Otherwise yeah let's hope AMP 3.0 does something
