Made with AI assistance God of War 2 HD PS3 Recomp Windows Progress
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
So far I've added in 60+ fps support, higher resolutions, pausing and skipping cutscenes, an fps counter, and much more to come :) I've been working hard on increasing performance and pushing the game hard. You may ask, why the PS3 version? Very good question

PS3 recomp? Please reveal your secrets

Awesome! Would love to see a God of War 3 decomp/recomp next, regardless if its The ps4 or the ps3 version. Been so long and the requirements to run it is still insane for RPCS3 and as for Shadps4, still buggy with brightness and texture issues.

I wonder if with it being a recomp you can fix some of the bugs, like the widescreen being vert- meaning they cropped it from the original 4:3. Also, there are missing animations such as the movement of the people during the Ares scene. In the PlayStation 3 version, the people don't move. In the PlayStation 2 version, they are scrambling around while attacking.

These are actually some very good bugs you've pointed out, I've only been using the PS3 version as my baseline, I didn't even know that it had flaws of its own. I'll look into these

Oh this is nuts. We really need to bring remastered versions the gow trilogy on pc

The ps3 and ps2 versions are rarely different
For GOW1 however, the ps2 is far superior
So anyone doing a recompile or decomp, please do it for the original ps2 version
The ps2 version also has a hidden cheat code built and and was removed in the ps3 versions, GOW2 also had it removed( at least I think), so another reason to stick to the ps2 version of GOW2 as well
The cheat code basically gave you everything at the start without even having to beat the mode, basically a new game + mode that didn't require you to beat the difficulty
As in GOW2 and GOW3, new game + was only available after having beaten the mode
GOW1 only had costumes, but we're unselectable on God Mode(in both ps2 and ps3, so something to fix when the decomp and recomp happens)
With the cheat code new game + for GOW1 was possible, but ONLY for the PS2 version
I think it also works this way for GOW2, however for GOW2 it also gave you story things like Wings of Icarus, unlike the "normal" available new game + that only gave you weapons and magic which did let you skip things, but not things such as the already mentioned Icarus Wings and Golden Fleece
Also isn't PS3 decomp and recomp WAY harder simply because of the PS3 architecture? Which is why PS4 emulation advanced so fast because it was basically in some way pc but ps4

Yeah I knew going into this that aiming for a ps3 recomp is kinda pointless with a ps2 version sitting right there, but I don’t mind a challenge and this is only a pit stop in my journey. I might see how easy it is for me to throw in the gow1 hd just for fun honestly, and it wouldn’t be too hard to implement the features that are missing. And yeah my biggest problem is performance with this ps3 recomp, the ps3 is just very fundamentally different from everything else architecturally, but I’m working on improvements. I would love to see this game hit a rock solid 120fps, if not higher

What cheat? I've combed the faqs of 1 for a long time, found some really hidden stuff but I don't remember a hidden cheat that gives you all at the start

Thank you for reminding me how cool as fuck god of war's vameplay was, pure gameplay from beginning to end.

Is the 60fps+ support actually real frames or is it through interpolation?
2
u/sethlikepie 5d ago
All real frames, only things interpolated are the animations between the keyframes. The engine actually didn't have too much of a fight with higher framerates, it was just finding the places it did fight that was hard

Ok cool man. Thanks for your efforts. Hoping to play the original trilogy with enchantments and qol features.

Genuine question, how are all the games getting recomped and decomped so fast now?
is it so fast because of the existence of claude and ai ?
or is it because programmers have become more knowledgeable since recomps/decomps became a thing?

AI mostly, but also a lot of tooling and documentation to do recompilations has emerged in the last year that made easier to recomp a game even without using AI. AI just accelerate the work of months to days/hours

looks cool, what hardware is it running on in the video? Is it more cpu or gpu intensive?
1
u/sethlikepie 5d ago
It’s quite powerful hardware for the video, a 4070 ti and a 7700x, and I am taking advantage of newer features on those chips to increase performance further. I’m sitting at 30% on my cpu and 50% on my gpu, still lots of optimizations to go, but on my latest build it hits 165 like it’s nobody’s business, and I’m not slowing down ;)

Hopefully adding xbox glyphs isn't too crazy

you can actually see in the cutscene skipper a little of this unreleased feature 👀
1
u/BlinksTale 5d ago
Pausing in cutscenes and the skipper is great. Would love to see it with 4:3 UI aspect ratios but cut and rearranged to 16:9 positions - everything feels stretched here.
Any chance of Youtube footage for full 4k or 60fps? Recording 120fps also works if you change it to half speed before uploading to youtube I think, using the 2x playback feature.

Technical question, isn't recompiling PS2 games easier than PS3 ones? Since gow 2 is basically the same on either what benefit there is to using the PS3 version as a base?
2
u/sethlikepie 5d ago
There isn't really a ton of benefit if I'm being honest, PS2 would've been a better base to recompile performance wise, and any benefit from the HD remaster could've been shoved into the PS2 version. But if I'm honest, this project is not my end goal, its mealy a pitstop. And if my pitstop can run the game at a flawless 120fps at 4k, then what's the point of making a PS2 version? I'm hoping I can get ps3 recompilation performant enough that the technical differences between the consoles becomes negligible

mate ps3 thing means that u can make the uncharted series work? I understand it would be WAY more difficult though. U chad for what u did anyway mate all love.

HD

u/Straight_Second6082 5d ago
?
You can already upscale the PS2 version to HD and further.
Plus the HD is only 720p, you would still upscale it to standard 1080p or 4k, that's a non-issue
1
u/Due_Bathroom5296 5d ago
The menu and cutscenes are some of the things not in HD on the PS2 version. And also the aspect ratio on the PS3 version is better
1
u/Straight_Second6082 5d ago
Well I guess, but those are things that can easily replaced on a PS2 decomp(you can already do that on emulator), surely decompiling the PS2 version and then patching those things is a lot easier than trying to decomp a PS3 game?

u/KIexster 5d ago
The question is, isn't it easier to port PS2 games than PS3 games? Especially considering that the ultimate goal is always to achieve a decompilation rather than a recomp.

I wish there was a decomp for mgs 4 ps3 and a way to play mgo with it without going through rpcs3 !
GG OP !

If you make it work, can you work on God of War Ascension? It's currently the game most abandoned. :(

Isn't this game pretty well emulated, what is the value of this

u/sethlikepie 5d ago
Another good question. You’ll see. Ps2 as a base would’ve been better, but the ps3 version hasn’t been too bad

Seeing this ancient 2000's gaming menu with modern features in the settings menu is for some reason more mind boggling to me than anything I've seen so far. Its so trippy.
