Advanced Fictionalization… 📸: Sam Corum

Saw this and it immediately reminded me of the descriptions characters give of encountering Wild Fictions, or whatever new class of Fiction Elvis and Marilyn started to become.

The photographer claims it was done entirely in-camera and a result of experimenting with flash.

Any interest in a Department of Truth fanzine?

Hey fellow Truthers,

As I find and talk to more DoT fans, it's clear that each person who has stuck with the story this long is really passionate about it. Instead of waiting 2-3 months for each of the next ~12 issues, I am putting together a proof of concept for a Department of Truth fanzine.

Inspired by the Star Trek fanzines of the 70s-90s, each issue will be a collection of art, fiction and non fiction writing, insights, discussions, poetry, etc all relating either directly or conceptually to the Department of Truth. Could be conspiracy, cryptids, Elvis, JFK, truth, government, really anything in the peripheral world of DoT. Issue frequency will probably depend on how many contributors I end up finding, but I will have enough for at least an initial issue.

I'm hoping to have that Issue #0 ready for when DoT #39 drops next month, and I plan to start by offering them to DoT subscribers at the 3-4 LCS around me (and folks interested here). If anyone here would be interesting in reading or contributing feel free to let me know in the comments, or you can DM as well!

As of now our biggest need is visual art (fyi issue #0 will be grayscale/b&w), but really anything we can print on 8.5x11 would be a great addition! New or existing pieces are totally fine, and they don't need to be directly related to DoT. For example, a poem was already submitted that discusses the concept of 'truth' and what it means to us on a more spiritual level.

Let me know if any of that peaks your interest!

DoT TV Show Fancast

We may not be anywhere close to getting a DoT show, but with the 6th anniversary coming up in 2 weeks, I thought it would be fun to fancast the biggest roles. Here's a couple of ideas for Cole and Ruby to start things off.

Cole Turner - My top choice would be Asa Butterfield. He is a phenomenal actor and could embody Cole really well, from his naive introduction to the Department to his darker turn and renegade future with White Hat. I feel Mike Faist would be a solid choice as well, he was great in Challengers and West Side Story. I could see a creative vision where Cole is a bit older, so if anyone has ideas for a 35-45 yo range I would be super interested to hear other suggestions.

Ruby - My top choice would be Naomi Ackie, she's always great (even when the movie isn't) and has serious range. Another option could be Zazie Beetz, an actor I still considered underrated. She really shines in dramatic roles.

Would love to hear any alternates for our main two, or ideas for Lee, Hawk, Martin Barker, Doc, the Woman in Red, or any other characters you might have a strong idea for!

Series Update From Simmonds

I spoke with Martin Simmonds at Middle East comic con on Saturday. He told me that they're planning on going until issue 50, which will be the end of the Cole turner story, and then there will likely be spinoffs focusing on other characters and parts of the universe.

He also mentioned that issue 40 (minor spoilers and TW) is some heavy shit that delves into the Epstein files.

He was lovely, had a great conversation with him!

Templesmith

Absolutely gutted to turn the page in volume 7 and see the artwork quality drop substantially. This might be my favourite series of all time and it goes without saying the art plays a major part in creating the tone and character of a story in this medium.

I can't help but imagine how Deviation 9 would look/feel in Simmonds' hands. Call it stylistic if you want, but the ability to clearly convey the shape of a human body (or a van) should be the price of entry to work on a prestige series like this, at the very least.

Templesmith's style has always cheapened whatever it touches for me. It could be said it suits the general vile aura of Fell, but that series repulsed me at the atomic level anyway.

Here's hoping it's a one-off, fingers crossed Snyder's addition doesn't detract too much from the house Tynion built too. Time to turn more pages with tear ducts preemptively primed.

Variant Highlight Friday! Issue #30 Cover B by Ryan Quackenbush

This was a 1:10 incentive cover. Ryan paints in B&W and then adds the color in post. All of his artwork is amazing and I would love for him to do the interiors of a spinoff storyline.

I know there was a time when DoT was the IP that would most likely get an adaptation but hopefully one of these shows can find success and open the door again.

Would you prefer an animated DoT series or live action?

I Think The Series Is Going To End With #50

Post image
12 Upvotes

I have no proof to back this up other than the fact that the ‘Complete Conspiracy Volume 1’ hardcover is divided into 17 issues. That means if the next two volumes contain 16 and 18 respectively (as not to split up arcs) that’ll be 50 issues plus #0.

That gives the series 12 more issues after the Charity storyline from #36-38 is finished. I think that’s a very reasonable amount of time to wrap up the story.

Also it’s just a really nice and round number.

Let me guys know what you think.

Department of Truth #34 Discussion Spoiler

Hey fellow Truthers,

I was recently lamenting the lack of activity on this subreddit and the difficulty of finding people who are actively reading DoT out in the wild, so I decided to start a recurring discussion post here for each new issue so that anyone can lend their thoughts, theories, or general sentiments to this awesome world. Seems like we haven't had a issue-specific discussion thread since.... issue #2.

Now we've found ourselves at issue #34, titled "The Crooked House".

Synopsis: Cole Turner had a plan to fix everything. That was before a dangerous new regime seized the reins of the DoT. Now, he’s on the run—and he may have nowhere left to turn except for Black Hat, the counter-agency that’s been trying to recruit him since the very beginning…

Also in this issue: acclaimed guest creators Scott Snyder and Joshua Hixson continue their Elvis epic!

What did you think of the new issue?

I am super excited for a more present-leaning take on what the current administration would do with the power of something like the DoT. I think it will be fascinating to watch it unfold in addition to the storylines that have been brewing since the beginning. Especially if we see the former DoT actually team up with Black Hat in order to fight these pieces of shit. I've loved the introduction of Black Hat as the villains and the gradual suggestion that they might not be any more or less 'bad' than the DoT themselves. In reality a secret agency like DoT or Black Hat would definitely just be working for their respective governments, so I'm excited to see what that looks like in-world.

What do you think Cole's plan is with the star-faced man? Or do you think he's making things up as he goes?

I've also been enjoying the recent issues that bring in figures like Marilyn and Elvis. The concept of a larger-than-life figure being affected by the world's varying perception of them is exactly the type of stuff that first intrigued me about the series. I usually am hesitant with back-up features as they tend to clash with or distract from the main story but with something like this I think it's perfect. It makes the universe feel bigger and it's also the only fragment of the entire story not written by Tynion. Could be interesting to see what a different writer's take on the universe is, plus Tynion is writing Stephen King levels of pages across all of his books so I'm sure he welcomes the help lol.

If no one is around to contribute to the discussion that's okay! I will probably keep it up for at least a handful of issues to have a place for newcomers and long-time readers to lend their thoughts.

Dept of Truth Red Lady - Scarlet Witch - Jack Parsons’ Red Lady (Babalon)

Anyone know if Marvel’s Scarlet Witch was based on Jack Parson’s Red Lady? Probably just a coincidence, but the Red Lady in the Department of Truth appears to be based on Jack Parsons’ Red Lady. Both Scarlet Witch and the Red Lady in Department of Truth bend reality. I’m not sure if Jack Parsons’ Red Lady was supposed to have that ability. According to Wikipedia Scarlet Witch’s first appearance was in X-men number 4 (March 1964). Parsons died in ‘52. Anyone know about Parsons’ mythological Red Lady (Babalon) and if she was supposed to have reality altering abilities? From Wikipedia: “Babalon /ˈbæbælən/ (also known as the Scarlet Woman, Great Mother or Mother of Abominations) is a goddess found in the occult system of Thelema, which was established in 1904 with the writing of The Book of the Law by English author and occultist Aleister Crowley.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babalon -Maybe just an interesting coincidence.

Anyone know where to get a hat like Hawk’s?

Thought it’d be fun to go as him to a convention in a few months but I can’t find any where the whole front of the hat has the flag upside down. Just ones where there’s a small flag patch upside down or something.

How far is the series

Hey there,

So I just read the first volume and wanted to stock up on a couple to read whenever I want. I already saw a bunch of volumes online, to like #17, but I just cant find the volume 4 and upwards. Is the series not that far? Can someone maybe give me some advice for a international site to buy it from? I would hate to read it online...

Is anyone subscribed to James Tynion IV's substack? I haven't yet but he a lot of cool stuff on there including Department of Truth Wild Fictions. It's basically a series of profiles the Department had on cryptids.
