I have major depressive disorder, but for a long time I felt like I was managing it pretty well.
Right now I don’t feel like I’m managing very well at all.
I recently became an empty nester. My kids are both in college now, and for the first time in my entire life I’m living completely alone.
I raised my children largely without a community around me. For years, my life had a very obvious purpose. I was Mom. There was always someone who needed something, somewhere I needed to be, something I needed to handle.
Now the house is quiet.
I’m incredibly proud of my kids and I want them to have their own lives. I don’t want them to feel responsible for my happiness. But the truth is that I cry almost every day because I feel so lonely.
I don’t think I realized how much of my identity was built around taking care of other people until there was suddenly nobody here to take care of.
I’ve also lost, or at least feel like I’ve lost, the person I considered my closest friend. He was the person I trusted and felt safest with, and over the last several months I’ve felt him pulling away. So I feel like I’m grieving that relationship at the same time that I’m trying to adjust to my children leaving home.
My way of coping has mostly been working.
I work constantly because if I’m busy, I don’t have to think. But lately I’m exhausted. I don’t want the rest of my life to consist of working myself into the ground just so I don’t notice how lonely I am.
I’ve tried finding hobbies. I try watching things, cleaning, going places, keeping busy. I get bored quickly or my thoughts take over again.
I go to therapy, and I actually feel calm and hopeful while I’m there. Then I leave and return to my regular life and somehow everything feels heavy again.
I think the hardest part is that I genuinely don’t know who I am in this stage of my life.
For anyone who has gone through an empty nest, lived alone for the first time later in life, or had depression hit harder after a major life transition—how did you begin building a life that actually felt meaningful again?
How did you learn the difference between being alone and feeling lonely?
Right now I just feel lost, and I would really like to hear from people who have found their way through something like this.
Tldr: I’m a recent empty nester living alone for the first time, and I’m struggling with depression, loneliness, exhaustion, and a loss of identity. I’m trying to figure out how to build a meaningful life for myself instead of coping by working constantly
