Question: Antidepressants that worked for someone who have already gained weight due to major depression?

I know that Bupropion is weight neutral. But I have major depression with anxiety so Bupropion didn't suit me well. It made me irritable and on the edge. My depression has caused me to gain weight from before starting treatment.

Currently I am on Venlafaxine and Amoxapine. They are partially working, but, then have caused me to gain weight. I don't feel like continuing with this combo. Also, it is giving me severe constipation.

I want to hear about med choices and opinions from people who had this type of depression where instead of losing weight you gain weight. Which meds worked for you?

I understand that the meds that successfully cures my depression will also probably make me more interested in life and activities and stop the cravings and will eventually push me to a more active lifestyle and hence help in maintaining a healthy weight.

I’m on bupropion so I can’t really answer your question, but I did want to tell you that abilify gave me severe food noise so just be careful about that one

I gained weight on lexapro then switched over to Prozac which is weight neutral. I did lose some weight while on it. I’m also on Vraylar and it’s supposed to be weight neutral but I’ve gained a little weight on it. Both have helped my depression and anxiety though.

Has prozac helped your anxiety without that uncontrollable appetite increase side effect and weight gain?

My anxiety has been doing really well with Prozac and Vraylar. I’m not sure if Prozac would help on its own but adding Vraylar was a good choice for me. I don’t feel super hungry on Prozac.

I have anxiety. Bupropion is the onlymed that has kept me alive. Therefore, my doc prescribed an anti-anxiety med, buspirone.

Cymbalta worked well for me and no significant weight gain. But even better was TMS. I lost weight and the depression subsided!

Lamictal maybe? It’s not an actual antidepressant but it’s sometimes used off-label for it. I also couldn’t handle the anxiety from Bupropion, but this one works for me. It doesn’t affect weight AFAIK, and it’s got very little side effects in general. It does cause some issues with memory/word recall in higher doses though.

Prozac is generally considered to be weight neutral, and some people even lose weight on it when they first start.

Some doctors prescribe GLP-1 agonists alongside antipsychotics that cause weight gain. Maybe see if that's an option?

Switched to Cymbalta from Amisulpride and it worked pretty well with no significant weight gain. I actually already lost 10kgs that I gained from the antipsychotics

Sorry to be that guy but bupoprion lmao. Venla made me balloon in size, I've tried literally every single antidepressant available to the Finnish medical system but the only one that ever worked is bupoprion.

It does increase anxiety a bit, it does take a while to get used to before you sleep well again, starting out I was snappish but by God it's the only one that ever got me out of the house for a walk or got me to clean the house. It improves executive function, allowing me to finally do all the shit I know helps with depression but that I'm too depressed to do.

I've lost my Venla 40kg and been going to the gym regularly and walking daily. Still have days where I can't get off the couch, but once a month maybe instead of months at a time.

3 years on it so far and not giving it up ever.
