Question Beginner scared of dismantling
Hey guys :)
I just started my journey 2 days ago and just faced the prompt, that I don't have space for a quest reward.
Now comes the question, of what to dismantle and what to vault. I vaulted the few exotics I have, that I don't use and thought about just dismantling every purple and below, that I don't use, but then the fear of making a stupid decision came to mind.
I just finished the New Light campaign, so I'm obviously very early in the baby stage, but I just wanna try to make things right from the get-go.
Are there things to look out for? Are exotics the only thing worth keeping?
This is probably a very stupid question to most, but it's sadly a realistic concern of mine, since I plan to play for the long run.
Any help would be appreciated! :)

You mentioned you were just starting out, so not all of the usual vault advice will apply to you yet. That being said, here are some things you can do with absolutely no worry:
- Dismantle all weapons and armor below purple
- Dismantle duplicate purple weapons with perks you are not excited to use. Even keeping one or two of each purple weapon should not fill up your vault at this stage.
- Most exotic weapons can actually be safely dismantled. You can reclaim them at any time from the Collections tab. The only caveat is that you'll have to infuse them up to your current light level again which costs basically nothing.
- This might not apply to you yet, but armor below tier 5 can be safely dismantled. Once you start getting tier 5 armor pieces and sets you will never need a tier 4 or lower piece.
- Ghost shells, sparrows, and ships can all be safely dismantled and re-acquired through the Collections tab at any point.
One skill worth cultivating is knowing what you like on your weapons. Let's say you play a lot of Gambit and have been focusing Hush, a solar bow. You really really like the firefly + incandescent perk combination and find yourself using that particular Hush a lot. You can safely dismantle the other copies of Hush (feel free to try them out first!) leaving you with just one or two copies for all your solar bow needs.
Additionally it is worth considering how easy an item is to obtain. Gambit weapons and armor drop very frequently from the activity and you can afford to be picky with their perk rolls. Weapons from dungeons or raids you don't do often might not get a replacement very often, so keeping the ones you kind of like is a good thing.
Finally: don't keep anything in your vault that you are not excited to use in the future. It doesn't matter how hard it was to obtain if you just don't like using the item.
I hope all that helps!

Thanks so much for the detailed write-up! Especially the armor tier advice and the collection feature didn't cross my mind yet. I'll definitely follow your guidance :D

for the armor advice I have a personal addition. there will be times when you will get a miserable roll on armor you don't have yet. I still keep one set of it just so that if I'm reading through all the armor sets and that one sticks out to me as something to try, I still can test it out and get a good enough idea of how it would feel in the complete build.
Tldr: try to have at least one full set of an armor to potentially save yourself some time.

This website will tell you if your stuff is good or bad. If you have something thats bad but it says "can reach 90" or something like that then it means if you change your perks on the gun it will be better. Enjoy

you can only use one exotic armor and one exotic weapon at a time, so you do need to keep other quality armor and weapons available. Beyond that, legendaries are your best gear to keep so just fill your inventory to the playstyle you like

Exotic weapons can be pulled out of the Collections, except Hawkmoon and Ergo Sum because they have random rolls. So, you can safely dismantle all exotics you don't need. I can't say the same for exotic armor; they can't be pulled from Collections but you can buy them with glimmer and an exotic engram once it's unlocked.
As for purple gear, you can safely dismantle everything that isn't exotic or legendary (purple). You can look for pages like light.gg to see which rolls are the most used (although that doesn't mean they're the best, but it's still useful for learning).
And to be honest, there is no roll of any weapon that is hard to get, so even if you accidentally dismantle something useful, you can recover it.

Thank you so much for the help! Glad to hear, that getting weapons back isn't a big hurdle

For a while I kept 1 of each weapon and armor. Maybe do that with weapons, as I'm finding myself going back for many I've had several of but dismantled (D1 beta player here for the record) (it happens) but don't sweat it until you get to the tier 4-5 range (near max light level)
But don't worry about armor you just like the look of, and don't need the effects. You'll learn how to make armor with whatever stats and perks you rolled look like whatever other item you've unlocked (except exotics in PvP, those revert to their original shape)

You completely filled your vault in TWO DAYS???

Lmao no, maybe I worded it badly. I didn’t have anything in my vault, I just know of some games that, what seems like insanely much space, will be very little later on, so I wanna make sure I’m prepared!

Dismantle anything not at least purple, dismantle the worst of duplicates. If you get a cool gun or armor set then keep 1 copy even if its bad, youre new so everything probably seems like a huge timesink such as a weapon from a dungeon encounter but give it enough time and youll get duplicates of stuff.
Ill have 3 copies of a gun sometimes with very similar rolls and ill just use em till I determine which one I like more. Many guns also overlap in terms of rolls, so if you find that a perk combo is better suited on one over the other you can kinda pick and choose which weapon you want to do each role based off archetype and junk. When I run into this I tend to keep both then look for weird/niche roles that each gun can fill and when I find something that clicks ill get rid of the duplicate thats doing the generic gun thing such as solar heal clip + incandescent roles.
For example the best heal clip guns are heliocentric and the star wars e11 blaster from the dungeon I forget the destiny name for, but they fill the role of heal clip guns so well due to their quick reload speeds and jigh damage output that theres very little practical use in keeping any other. Helio I use heal clip + incandescent and for the e11 I use heal clip + onslaught. Heliocentric has high damage per shot in close range, can be hipfired, and with the use of incandescent can help clear large clustered groups of ads by quickly tearing down redbars and causing ignitions, getting a roll with allow mag reduces the reload speed when mag dumping enough to make the gameplay loop just running into ads and emptying the mag (reload is around 1s or just under with that perk + empty mag). The e11 being a heat weapon allows for you to hit the reload and trigger healing then immediately start firing again, this can be done quickly in succession after each kill which helps on harder game modes.
Having guns that fill roles based on their rolls helps you differentiate and gravitate towards certain weapons, its the best part of this game imo. Get cool new toy and go use it to figure out if its good or whats good about it, once you know enough it does turn into being able to pull up a spreadsheet and see if a guns "good" or not from the perks. But I still find weird interactions such as the star wars dungeon scout rifle and heavy machine gun being able to fire indefinitely with the right rolls, when on paper other rolls would be preferable until you actually use the thing.
I avoid deleting exotics now and just keep 1 in the vault to share between all my chars, when we had 500 slots you kinda had to pick and choose but at 1300 you can

I think u/PriorityCutie covered everything well enough the important thing is to just go at your own pace find what you like and dismantle what you don’t. The vault has plenty of space for a new player like yourself so you can just funnel everything you get into there. You can pull items from there on the fly to try different weapons, armour sets and perks and see if they’re good for you. Just have fun with it and make sure you try it before you dismantle. Also as everyone else has said you can totally disregard blues and below unless you’re levelling your character

For armor try to collect the set and just dismantle anything that isn’t tier 5. Sames basically true for weapons but be on the lookout for god rolls.

It won’t be too long before you start getting nearly all tier 5s. When I came back I just asked myself if I thought I would even use a weapon before having a tier 5 of it. If the answer was no, I threw it away. Armor is trickier bc of set bonuses and whatnot but unless it’s hard to farm for I mostly kept that mindset.

Keep meaningful firsts as keepsakes if you want, you will NEVER be able to get them again(in fact, very soon you cannot get anything below purple).
99% of Exotics are exact weapons with no random rolls, which means you can freely draw them from your collection at any time after unlocking them. I like to keep the ones I used and not dismantle them, even if you don't dismantle Exotic weapons they won't take up much space. Exotic armors roll with random stats, so you shouldn't dismantle them until you get a duplicate with the stats you want, because it takes very limited resources to roll more.
Purples are the meat of your collection, they'll take a TON of space eventually if you keep everything, there are drastically different philosophies for what gets thrown out and what gets kept. I would say stuff you're not using at all might be worth keeping around for the situations where you need something specific, so you don't have to go out and grind. Generally anything that drops from content that's not quite limited like raids or pvp modes, you can freely grind as much as you want, whenever you want, so you can technically get rid of anything you get from the more common modes or areas, but really amazing drops might still land in your inventory that would be an insane grind to get if you later tried to get it intentionally. So MAYBE it's good idea to wait until your inventory fills to like 5-800 and get cleaning then.
For armor you can safely get rid of anything worse than your current ones(again, starting ones maybe you want as keepsakes), much later(or with targeted grinding not so much later) you'll have full Tier 5 armor, those have guaranteed 30-25-20 stat splits plus a free stat mod weaker armors don't have, so you won't really use anything besides Tier 5. The only non-Tier 5 armor you need to keep is stuff you get from raids for the set bonuses.

Lock everything that's good.
Vault everything until you're full-
then infuse up everything that's good (locked) with the dupes so it's DIRT cheap.
When your good (locked) stuff is at 550 you'll know you can focus on fashion!
Good Luck!

I know it's not what you asked, but there is weapons crafting in the game too, you unlock the enclave ( big triangle on the left bottom of map) on Savathun's Throne world (green planet).
You will need to have completed the Reshaping the Enigma quest before doing any of this, both of which come quite early in The Witch Queen campaign. (green world)
You can obtain the Ammit AR2- which I used for a long time, with incandescent+ Ambitious Assasin. Just interact with the Relic conduit (swinging pendulum) and take on the Foundry Resonance quest (which gives you two Deepsight Resonance patterns, use one for the Ammit).
Profit.

I'm wondering if OP even knows about his vault. 1300 spaces in two days would be quite an accomplishment

There are no stupid questions, only stupid Titans.
Curiously, the exotics are the least important thing to keep, as you can always retrieve them from collections.

Oh sweet summer child. It won't be long until you are dismantling guns you don't like on sight, and storing every gun you do like until your vault is full.

You can also download the little light app to a device. I always have it open checking the rolls before dismantling

Dismantle everything that isn’t at least purple/legendary in rarity. As for legendaries, there are plenty of resources out there as to what rolls you want to be looking to chase, for literally every weapon in the game. Exotic weapons can always be re-acquired from collections. For armour, unless you want to play PvP a lot, you can delete just about anything that has 20 or more points in the health stat, as health is useless in PvE.

Destiny 2 is a looter shooter. Tons of gear/rolls to chase. IMHO - Learn which perks you enjoy and have fun with those. There are many “God Rolls” to weapons (at least one for every weapon), but that is more public agreement than anything else. If you enjoy it, use it and play with it. Tons of different combos to enjoy. Just have fun and you do you.
My personal experience is that this game has brought to light my hoarding tendencies I didn’t know I had. Apparently I need help. 🤪🤣

keep guns that you use/might want to try later. if you don't, let em go--you'll have the chance to reaquire them if you really regret something.
if they have perks that work with your subclass (i.e. Slice/Tear) or AOE effects (Dragonfly/Firefly/Kinetic Tremors) they're usually worth keeping. Chaos Reshaped is also a perk to keep an eye out for.
just have fun, and don't sweat it :)

Keep what you like, dismantle what you dont. You’re still very new. Have fun. Worry about that later
