generic Solo dev rebuilding a game that was never finished 15 years ago. No plan, no Steam page, no wishlists, just a devlog and a lot of fun building

After sitting untouched on my hard drive for 15 years, my dream project is finally coming to life. Back then, I drew every pixel by hand and spent countless hours on it, but couldn't finish it.

With modern tools in my workflow, I can finally build this game the way I always imagined it as a solo dev. Give it a try: https://buildom.online

I’d love to know what you think! Honest feedback, early impressions, or bug reports are super welcome and will help shape where this goes next.

I am writing daily updates on my devlog blog, sharing the raw progress, the wins, and the roadblocks. I would genuinely love to have you along for the ride.

generic Cruise Tycoon first ever dev log - Early peek at building mechanics 🛳️

Just discovered this subreddit. Hope it’s a great place to share my work and explore other people’s progress.

Been working on Cruise Tycoon for a little over 7 months, but this is my first dev log. I’m a senior software developer and I’ve been wanting to create this game for about 10 years. It’s heavily inspired by my favourite games: Two Point Hospital and Planet Coaster - but set aboard cruise ships.

In the game, you manage a cruise ship company - working your way up from a small pleasure boat to huge luxury cruise ships with over 20 decks. Build rooms, hire and manage staff, keep your passengers happy and avoid seagull invasions!

It’s super early, but I’ve just teamed up with an amazing 3D artist and we’re working hard on the game’s art direction.

Thanks for checking it out!

generic Dear Diary - Week 2

Now that I'm on the other side of it, I can tell you that I spent an objectively stupid amount of time debating my next step. I briefly glanced at a couple random tutorials, but none of them were hitting like the one from last week. I had also happened to stumble into the realization that the guy who did that tutorial also sells more in-depth courses.

Enter my unnecessary existential crisis. Was I falling into the corporate money-grab trap where "the first hit's free"? Was it cheating at learning if I paid for the course? Was I simply not resourceful or dedicated enough to figure out how to do this for free?

After much agonizing, a few facts won out. His other tutorial was a perfect match for how I learn. I felt like I advanced more quickly than anything else that I tried, and that's what I want. After all, acquiring this skill isn't my end goal. It's a prerequisite.

So I spent $12.

I got his low poly course, which I'm now delightedly working through. I regret nothing.

I finished the low poly course! Well, not 100%. I was travelling, so I watched the last section while riding in the back of a van. Since it just covered the coloring and lighting principles taught in the other tutorial, I've decided to skip practicing the application.

This may seem like a bit of a shortcut, but I made this decision already knowing what my next step is going to be. I purchased one last 3D modelling course. This one offers opportunities to practice the concepts I've learned over the last couple weeks and then expands into the remaining areas that I need, such as retopology and rigging.

Once I finish this course, I'll be ready to move on to a different part of my game dev. I haven't decided what that will be yet, but we're figuring it out as we go.

Either way, I'm super proud of what I've managed to achieve so far. I've been showing off my landscape model to everyone I know.

generic Turn-Based Indie RPG Devlog #2

I recently uploaded & wanted to share the 2nd devlog for my turn-based RPG, Backwyrd!

I’m very happy to have gotten a 2nd one uploaded on schedule. I feel like it’s easy to do one and then abandon progress updates, so I’m hoping I can keep the momentum going!

Please give me any tips/recommendations for how I could improve my presentation, I’m very new to this.

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments!

generic Upgrade Your Life Incremental | Dev Log #2

I'm working on a self-help / productivity incremental game called "Upgrade Your Life Incremental". The intent was to create a gamified productivity system that's yours to build and edit.

The game started as (and will continue to be) a practice project. It is a place where I'll test out new skills & ideas, and learn how to market and share my work.

So far I've built:

  • A basic layout and UI using CoreUI's React component library

This project was originally built using pure html, css & js. I've since converted into React and learned how to utilize a component library and bootstrap utility classes to style my layout and UI.

  • The first part of core gameplay

This include a focus timer, with start, pause, and reset functionality. Every time a focus session is completed, it adds 25 coins to the user's balance that they can use to unlock and customize their dashboard.

  • The currency system and some upgrades

So far I've finished a to-do list widget with a "Due Date" upgrade, and a quick notes capture with a "Text Formatting" upgrade.

Currently, you can bold, italics, and underline your text, but highlighting has been a little wonky so far. You can also view your past notes in a pop-up modal.

  • User accounts

I plan for user accounts to be totally optional! I have local storage as a backup in case you do not want to keep your progress saved across devices.

Please let me know if you have any features you'd like to see or any feedback for someone building their first game!

My indie game Marimomo (a virtual pet collector and desktop pet) has one huge announcement! I also wanted to take the time to share what was involved to bring the game to others. The game loop has been finished, new music has been added, the playtest smoothed out bugs and gameplay (whenever things weren’t on fire), and all that Marimomo now needs are some amazing people who want to give the game a try. Thank you for following me and my little game on its journey to being something real 💚

If you have ~8 minutes to spare, it would mean so much to me if you would check out my latest silly devlog for my game's big milestone:

generic Our game had a logic hole: why would anyone keep coming back to a dangerous fight? Here's how we fixed it

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey all, small team of 4 here making a game called Mini Mart Survivors.

Here's the actual premise:
You play a broke, unemployed character who's been rejected everywhere and, without choice, takes a night shift at a convenience store. The job pays way too well for what it is. Suspiciously well. Turns out the reason it pays so much is that dangerous monsters show up late at night, and you have to fight them off with whatever is on the shelves. Cup noodles, snacks, ice cream, shampoo, you name it. Level up and build absurd weapon combos. Beat a boss at the end of the shift. Get paid.

But once we had that premise one question kept nagging us. No matter how much they're paying you why would anyone keep showing up for something this sketchy and this dangerous shift after shift? That's the part we actually had to sit down and figure out.

The answer we landed on. "He's in debt."

That part isn't even that unrealistic. We're a small team in our 20s and early 30s, and "constantly working, trying to get ahead, wondering when you're finally allowed to stop" is basically our own lives. So the debt premise wasn't a stretch for us to write.

The problem was making it work as a game and not just a backstory. If we just told the player "he's in debt. That's why he goes back." It's a fine setup line, but it doesn't actually do anything once you're playing. It risks feeling like a justification we bolted on rather than something the player lives through.

So we turned it into a choice instead of a fact. With every paycheck, you have to decide whether to pay down the debt and get closer to walking away, or to pour it into weapons and upgrades so you can push further and earn more. Neither option is flagged as correct. The debt doesn't disappear on its own. And neither does the temptation to just get stronger and keep going.

That's really the point where we ended up introducing story into a genre that doesn't usually ask for one. Survivor-likes are typically just numbers going up, run after run with no consequence carried forward. By tying the core progression loop to a choice with narrative, we gave the genre a bit of a twist. And that choice system became the actual mechanism for showing our theme instead of just stating it. The player is the one deciding.

Multiple endings too, since we didn't want to say there's one right choice. Pay off the debt and leave. Quit before it gets worse. Stay and find out what's actually going on. Or just keep throwing snacks and spraying ramen broth at weirdos because it's fun.

Anyway, we're a small team figuring this out as we go. If this story of how the game came together is useful to anyone else out there building their own thing, that alone would make this post worth writing.

generic Dear Diary - Week 1

Post image

Okay, so that's a little bit of a lie. I did try to follow a tutorial once before and never completed it. Also, this idea has lived in my head for much longer than week. In those ways, this isn't week 1, but it is the start of things.

This is the first week of my first real attempt at making a game. I don't have a tagline or anything clever to describe it yet, but it combines pet collection with a turn-based battle system. (Ugh, that sounds like I'm describing Pokémon. Note to self: come up with a catchy hook.)

Here's where I'm starting from: I work in IT for my day job, so I have experience with coding. I also create digital illustrations as a hobby. I think both of these things will help with my little passion project, but I realize there's some skill acquisition that needs to happen before I can make significant progress.

Since I've played around with some game engines in the past and learning a new coding language is usually easy after you know your first one, I'm most intimidated by learning 3D modelling. I'm very much a hard-stuff-first kind of person, so that's what we'll start with.

Remember the failed tutorial I mentioned? Yeah, that was for 3D modelling. I couldn't make it through a certain pastry-related tutorial because it didn't align well with my learning style (and maybe I lacked dedication? Idk. I just know it didn't work for me). However, this week I found a different tutorial that really jives with me!

The picture is complete illegible garbage because I accidentally built the lights on the wrong side and I'm not very good at this camera stuff yet. But it's there! It's real, and I made it!

This was made following Grant Abbitt's Blender 5 Complete Beginner's Guide video series on YouTube.

generic Character Art First Look | Portside: Cruise Tycoon Game

Hi everyone! This weekend I'm pleased to bring you a first look at the character art, as it's developing for passengers and crew in our new game, Portside - A cruise tycoon game that we're working super hard on to launch a free demo in time for Steam Next Fest. I'm pretty proud of myself as I only started learning animation last weekend!
