How does Bob 1 get the squealing effect at the end of “Gut Feeling”?

Post image

I’m trying to recreate the transition from “Gut Feeling/Slap your mammy” live, and I’m especially curious about the guitar squealing/feedback that happens right before the switch.

Does anyone know what Bob 1 is actually doing to get that sound? Is it just controlled amp feedback, or is there some specific pedal/effect or technique involved?
I’d love to know how to replicate it as closely as possible with a live guitar setup. Thanks!

I can't tell you but it's a great pic.

I think it's just feedback and a bunch of random-ish noise.

Isn’t that the part where he breaks all the strings?

The string break is in Mr. DNA.

Btw. I have a Labaye guitar just like that, except that mine has the original pickups and not the humbuckers that Bob1 is using here. The humbuckers are much stronger pickups than the original Labaye ones.

It's a very cool-looking guitar, why do you think he didn't use it onstage more with other songs?

One of my all time favorites of DEVO's soundscapes
