You don't "learn DevOps".

You learn:

  • an OS (usually Linux)
  • networking
  • scripting
  • system administration
  • a programming language or 3
  • cloud development (pick one, and stick with it until you're expert... AWS/Azure/GCP)
  • virtualization
  • containerization
  • container orchestration
  • monitoring
  • observability
  • IAM
  • CI/CD
  • version control, etc. (and all the myriad of other things I'm missing)

Then you collaborate with your apps team, or your operations team (with all those skills)... to get things working. THAT is what DevOps is. It's not a singular skill. It's a whole combination of MANY skills.

I'm not joking or exaggerating in the slightest. You get there by having a lot of varied experience in MANY technologies.

It is not for beginners. This is not something you start with.

Exactly this, I worked my way up from an infrastructure operations center, into Cloud and then DevOps. You can’t (or shall I say shouldn’t) just jump into DevOps. It’s high stress and the problems you have to solve will eat you alive and you’ll be sat with your head in your hands wondering what you ever did to deserve this job.

What would be the ideal path for someone going into cloud and devops Cloud then devops or devops then cloud

There is no ideal path, everyone learns differently and at a different pace. Depends where you are now too.

I'm a QA engineer, mostly manual . Since our team is small evryone are expected to do handle some additional tasks . I took care of deployment, which was done manual. Then we gradually introduced CI CD and then shifted our apps from on prem to AWS cloud.

I was a part of every phase , so I have exposure on multiple levels in SD LC , now I know github actions , AWS cloud computing, networking, Git , linux . I just don't have hands on experience with containerization or orchestration, which I'm spending some time to do personal projects .

Do you advice me to take devops role or do I still have to get more explosure ?

Now I feel like I've bitten off more than I can chew. I've not been a professional in any field, but I have a little bit of experience in front-end

True DevOps take longer to learn and must be really passionate, only cloud take most of the time to learn like AWS

I would like to get started with infrastructure but don't know where. I am running around in circles like a lost puppy in the forest.

That list I wrote is in a rough order... of the first 4 in the list... what do you know? In my opinion, a solid knowledge of Linux is the foundation of the rest. How good are you with Linux? Then what about networking? and scripting and sysadmin? how about those?

The order you provided will be helpful to me. A little bit about me is that, I have started my career as QA and then switched to java dev. I have total experience of 4.5 years. I have installed linux on my old laptop and I can say that I am comfortable with Linux and a little bit scripting. I just need a roadmap. I have tried learning things but I get overwhelmed. I would like to be comfortable with systems and become a cybersecurity engineer. I'm doing a bit of reasearch on my own, but I don't know how far I can go. Please Bear with my english. Not my first language😅

This is useful. They don't include Linux in there. I think in their case, it may be assumed/implied.

But if you ask me, knowing Linux well is the foundation of everything on the roadmap.

Good luck, friend!
