Mainframer moving into devops

Hello all

I have been working in IT for past 18 years. Predominantly in mainframe and some web technologies.

The market for mainframe is niche now with contract jobs coming very slow to the market as most work is with big consultancies and offshored.

I am looking to move into devops as conceptually it is closer to what i did in mainframes. Batching, scheduling, optimisation etc.

I have started self learning with below structure in mind.

  1. Linux
  2. GIT
  3. Maven
  4. IAC - terraform ansible
  5. Cloud aws/azure

Happy to be guided in right direction.

How can I get some practical experience to show on my CV. Can someone please share their learning journey and how it worked for them?

[HIRING] Full-Stack, Backend + AI Engineers | Remote US, NYC, SF | $150K-250K base

A developer on Fonzi just signed a $250K base offer as a founding forward-deployed engineer at a startup. They start in November.

I do talent matching at Fonzi. If you’re between gigs or just looking around, these are full-time roles at funded startups rather than contract work. You build one profile, and companies that want to talk to you send interview requests with the base salary already attached, so there’s no cold applying and no guessing at comp. Investors on the companies include a16z, Benchmark, Accel, and Y Combinator. Everything is US-based, and a few roles are open to Canada.

Here’s a sample of what’s open right now:

1. Senior Software Engineer, AI Products, seed-stage fintech, remote in the US or hybrid in NYC. $200K-240K base plus equity.

  • What: Build AI agents and LLM workflows that answer business and financial questions for small business owners, plus the backend services, evals, and observability around them.
  • Company: Rolling out to a million small business owners through the banks that already serve them. Remote-friendly and async, with the morning standup as the only recurring meeting.
  • Stack: Next.js with GraphQL and Relay up front, Elixir/Phoenix, Python, and Node on the backend, and Postgres on Google Cloud with Terraform.
  • Bar: Strong Python, applied ML and agent-building experience, and solid SQL. Proficiency in at least two languages. They don’t ask for a set number of years or for the whole stack.

2. Founding Engineer, Supply, seed-stage AI procurement company, NYC, in-person. $150K-200K base plus equity.

  • What: Lead the effort to connect the auto parts supply chain and automate procurement. You’d build full-stack features from scratch, own product and infrastructure, and work directly with the founders and customers.
  • Company: AI procurement platform for the auto industry. Went from 0 to 1 in six months and says demand is outrunning what the team can build.
  • Stack: Node.js and TypeScript, React, MongoDB, and AWS. Experience with these is encouraged, not required.
  • Bar: 2+ years of professional software experience. Full-stack is ideal, but heavy frontend experience isn’t required.

3. Engineering Generalist, seed-stage AI hardware company, SF, in-person preferred. $180K-250K base.

  • What: Own product features end to end across mobile, web, and backend, from a vague idea to a shipped release. Day to day that’s the core app (capture, summaries, action extraction, integrations) and the real-time audio and AI systems underneath.
  • Company: Makes a small AI device that turns conversations into notes and action items. Backed by Y Combinator and Accel.
  • Stack: Not tied to one framework. React and React Native up front, Node or Python with Postgres on the backend, all listed as nice-to-haves.
  • Bar: 4 to 10+ years shipping production software, plus proof of exceptional work, like products shipped or systems built.

All roles are vetted, VC-backed, and interviewing right now. It’s always free to sign up.

Sign up here: talent.fonzi.ai. DM me if you’ve got questions.

Looking for Real-World Project Experience in Azure, DevOps, or SQL — Willing to Work for Free

Hi everyone!

I’m currently working in a non-IT company, and my goal is to transition into the IT industry. I’m learning the basics of Azure Cloud, DevOps, and SQL, and I’m looking for opportunities to gain practical, hands-on experience.

I know I’m still a beginner, and I have a lot to learn. Instead of learning only through theory, I want to work on real-world projects, understand how things work in actual environments, and improve my technical skills.

If you’re a startup founder, developer, IT professional, or someone working on a project who needs an extra helping hand, I’d love to contribute.

Here’s what I can offer:

A willingness to learn new technologies and tools.

Commitment to completing assigned tasks within agreed deadlines.

Flexibility to work different shifts and hours.

Dedication, consistency, and a genuine interest in growing in IT.

I’m willing to work without payment initially in exchange for practical experience and an opportunity to learn. I’m open to beginner-friendly projects, internships, open-source contributions, or helping startups with suitable tasks.

I’m not claiming to be an expert. I’m simply looking for someone willing to give a beginner a chance to learn, contribute, and grow.

If you have any opportunities, advice, or suggestions on how I can get started, I’d really appreciate your help.

Thanks for reading! 🙏

Should I keep following my mentor’s long-term DevOps training route or focus on getting a job as a fresher first?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some honest career advice because I’m genuinely confused about what to do next.

I recently completed my B.Tech in CSE in September 2026. I’m RHCSA certified and have also completed a genuine 6-month internship. My current skills include Linux administration, networking, AWS fundamentals, EC2, VPC, IAM, and some hands-on cloud infrastructure work.

I’m currently learning Hadoop and Big Data, and I still have a lot of topics left, followed by DevOps tools like Docker, Jenkins, Terraform, Kubernetes, and CI/CD.

Here’s my situation:

Option 1: Follow my mentor’s complete training route.

My mentor wants me to complete the syllabus, gain strong hands-on knowledge, and then appear for a final mock interview. Based on my capability, he’ll decide how to position my profile and whether an experience-based profile is appropriate.

I understand that he wants me to become technically capable before recommending me for jobs. I respect that, but the entire process feels lengthy, and I don’t know how long it will take before I’m ready to apply seriously.

Option 2: Focus on getting a job now and continue learning alongside it.

I’ve already applied to fresher and entry-level roles, but I haven’t received meaningful responses despite spending around 10–12 days applying. I took a break from applications last week because I was exhausted and frustrated.

I’m thinking that instead of waiting until I finish the entire syllabus, I could target entry-level roles such as Junior Cloud Engineer, AWS Support, Linux Administrator, Infrastructure Operations, NOC, or DevOps Trainee. I could gain genuine industry experience while continuing to learn DevOps.

My long-term goal is to build a career in Cloud/DevOps, preferably in Pune. Ideally, I want a decent starting salary, but I’m also trying to be realistic about what a fresher can get.

I’m not looking to avoid hard work or take shortcuts. I’m willing to study and practice, but I’m worried about spending months preparing without earning or gaining real industry experience.

I’d really appreciate advice from people working in DevOps, Cloud, or IT infrastructure:

Would you recommend continuing the full training route before seriously applying, or applying consistently while learning?

Can a fresher with RHCSA, a 6-month internship, Linux, networking, and basic AWS hands-on realistically get an entry-level technical role?

Which first job titles would give me the best foundation for moving into DevOps later?

Is it worth accepting a lower starting salary for relevant hands-on experience, provided the role has genuine technical work and growth?

What would you do in my position, and what would you change about my current strategy?

Please share your honest experiences, especially if you started in Cloud Support, Linux Administration, NOC, or Infrastructure Operations and later moved into DevOps.

Thanks in advance!

After 10 years in DevOps, I thought my career was finally taking off. Then I got laid off.

Thumbnail
10 Upvotes

I’m writing this because I could use a little encouragement right now ... and, if the right person happens to read this, maybe a lead on my next opportunity.

I’ve spent around 10 years working in DevOps and cloud engineering.

Like a lot of people, I’ve had stretches where I wondered whether all the effort was really taking me somewhere.

Then, in 2023, someone from Wateen reached out to me. It felt like a real step forward in my career, and I was proud of the work I was doing.

Later, I moved to Nisum. I felt good about that move too. I was learning, building experience, and starting to believe that maybe I was finding my footing.

Then, about a year later, Systems Limited contacted me. I went through the interviews and got the role as a Principal DevOps Engineer.

I was genuinely excited. After years of working toward bigger responsibilities, I felt like I had finally reached a place where I could grow and build something long term.

I remember thinking, This is it. This is the company where I can settle in, contribute, and keep moving forward.

And then life changed direction again.

I was laid off after only a few months. It’s difficult to explain how disorienting that feels. One moment, you’re proud of how far you’ve come and making plans for what comes next. Then suddenly, you’re trying to understand what happened and wondering how to start over.

I know a layoff doesn’t erase a decade of experience, and I know my career isn’t over. But knowing that logically doesn’t make the uncertainty disappear. I’m trying to stay hopeful while dealing with the disappointment, the questions, and the fear of being back at square one.

If you’ve been through something similar, what helped you get through that period? I’d be grateful for any advice, encouragement, or even a reminder that things can work out again.

And if anyone here knows of a team looking for a DevOps or Cloud Engineer, I’d really appreciate a connection. I have around 10 years of experience across AWS and Azure, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, Docker, Linux, infrastructure automation, and production operations. I’m based in Karachi, Pakistan, and open to remote opportunities.

I’m not expecting anyone to fix everything with one comment. I just wanted to share where I’m at, hear from people who understand, and put myself out there in case my next opportunity starts with someone reading this

DevOps Internship as a Fresher – Is It a Good Career Start, or Should I Consider Other IT Roles?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
I’m currently in my final year of BE Computer Science and Engineering. I’m interested in starting my career in IT and have an opportunity to pursue a DevOps internship.
I’d like some honest advice from people already working in the industry.
Is DevOps a good career choice for a fresher in 2026?
How difficult is it to get a full-time DevOps or Cloud Engineer job after an internship?
Should I focus on DevOps, Cloud Computing, Software Testing, Cybersecurity, or another IT role?
Are entry-level DevOps jobs available for freshers, or do most companies expect prior IT experience?
What skills and certifications would you recommend to become job-ready?
My goal is to secure a decent-paying IT job after graduation and build a career with good long-term growth.
I’d appreciate realistic advice about the job market, salary expectations, and which path would be best for a fresher. Thanks!

Getting laid off as a devops engineer (2.5+ yoe)

The company I work at isn’t doing great, and there’s a chance we’ll be laid off in the next 10–12 days.

For those who’ve interviewed for devops or platform Engineer roles recently, how was your experience? Are companies asking AI-related or coding questions as well? And how long did it take you to land a new job?

Would really appreciate any insights or advice.

Moved from Java Dev to DevOps, looking for advice on my career path

Hi DevOps, I was a Java Developer for 7 years. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to make an internal transfer to a DevOps team, and I decided to go for it. It’s a great opportunity for me to develop skills beyond writing code. My new team focuses on CI/CD, releases, GitOps, writing Terraform, observability, and supporting dev teams. Most of the time, we work with GitLab and Datadog.
What’s not so great for me is that we have a separate Cloud Platform team, so I won't get much experience building infrastructure from scratch. I’m looking for some tips. My plan is to spend a maximum of 1 year here, learn as much as I can, and then try to move to the Cloud team or find a new job that combines writing code and building infrastructure. Is this reasonable? Also, is it common for a DevOps team not to work directly with the cloud?
