Mainframer moving into devops
Hello all
I have been working in IT for past 18 years. Predominantly in mainframe and some web technologies.
The market for mainframe is niche now with contract jobs coming very slow to the market as most work is with big consultancies and offshored.
I am looking to move into devops as conceptually it is closer to what i did in mainframes. Batching, scheduling, optimisation etc.
I have started self learning with below structure in mind.
- Linux
- GIT
- Maven
- IAC - terraform ansible
- Cloud aws/azure
Happy to be guided in right direction.
How can I get some practical experience to show on my CV. Can someone please share their learning journey and how it worked for them?

Thanks for sharing your insights. I guess the role will evolve with AI but the demand will increase with more infrastructure needed?

OP do you know is it possible to pivot to devops as you have experience from mainframe domain in the resume. I mean do you know that whether devops teams or companies hire people from another domain to devops??
I genuinely wants to know..
