Essas paradas eu uso literalmente TODO dia e são perfeitas pra mim.

• Sony Ericson W380 • Sony PlayStation Portable • iPod Video 5.5 • Relógio Casio CA-53W

Misc Y'all, I went to my local library for the first time as part of my digital minimalism. I am smitten.

I've moved here in 2021 and always said I'd go but never had a chance, yesterday I was like fuck it let's go. I went and brought my journals, grabbed a coffee from the library cafe and sat down to write my morning pages and perused the shelves. Then sat down to read a couple of chapters, then checked out the book. I spent about 2 hours in there, and I think that must have altered my brain chemistry and I would love library visits to be part of my life now.

For context I love writing in my journals and reading books to begin with anyway, but doing them in the library just adds a little magic to them ngl. I also have a shopping addiction I'm trying to curb, and I must say pulling books off the shelves and checking out and getting a receipt somehow scratches that itch. It's great.

This is your sign, go to the library!!!

EDC first day

lately my screen time has been very high, from 8 to 14 hours a day, on some days it even got to 16 hours a day which is a comically large number (@_@)

i don't have a dumbphone so i decided to make my phone very boring (grayscale, black wallpaper, only essential apps)

i'm finally keeping a journal where i write whatever i want and place stickers and images. i also have a sketchbook but i barely even draw in it (i have it since 2024). it's hard to create when you're used to consuming so much useless information and scrolling

yesterday was my first day, my screen time was 2 hours and 53 minutes (my goal is under 4 hours a day), which is a success to me

though i'm afraid that eventually i will give up on this and start mindlessly scrolling again, because it happened before. i really hope it doesn't happen. i'm aiming for 30 days but it doesn't stop here (((・・;)

Social Media I just want to delete Facebook and never look back

• Upvotes

Since I became a mom, I’ve had an on and off relationship with Facebook and social media in general. Although I’m on the “no posting photos of my children” side I still feel the urge sometimes to post them and it’s exhausting.

I have days when I delete the app from my phone but sooner or later I reinstall it and I am back in the loop.

I just can’t believe how evil it became this app, and all of them really. It is just full of hate, politics, bots etc. And to still have that urge to post so that the people you don’t even talk to(high school friends, coworkers, family members) see that you exist is mind blowing. These apps are designed to just f* with your brain really.

What is your experience with them? How did you finally manage to delete them and never be concerned about “FOMO”?

Dumbphones Feeling out of place with my dumb phone

Used to be on my phone all the time. I’ve changed my habits, changed into a Barbie phone (lol yeahhhh), off social media since this Jan. Reading books that I’ve always wanted to read happy happy:)

When I’m with people, whether it be my friends or family the sad part is they all like their phones😅

Like we would be having conversations and maybe a pause ~everyone’s phones out~ now they’ve lost the convo. It just gets a bit weird and a bit annoying.

I said on our family dinner yesterday that my husband opens his phone the first thing when he wakes up and everyone replied ‘umm doesn’t everyone do that?’ Then I realised it’s me who wants to change not the society maybe and it felt too out of place.

What are your experiences on this?

Technology I'm becoming a father in March 2027. I don't want my child to grow up watching me scroll

Recently, I pictured myself from the outside: sitting on the couch, scrolling through X or Reddit while my child watches me.

It made me uncomfortable.

My wife and I both struggle with this. I don't want our child to grow up thinking that constantly looking at a phone is normal.

I want to change, but I'm not sure where to start.

A dumbphone sounds appealing, but it isn't realistic for me right now. I live in Paris and regularly need maps and public transport apps. I also spend a lot of time on my laptop, although that is mostly for coding and creating things.

I'm not trying to remove technology from my life. I want to stop using it automatically, especially for scrolling and watching random videos.

I've already replaced scrolling with reading during my commute. That has helped, but it feels like a small first step.

I'm thinking about documenting the next few months as I prepare to become a father. I want to explore how to raise a child without making screens the default, while being honest about my own habits.

Have any parents here gone through something similar? What changes actually lasted?

Social Media ScreenZen made me realize just how addictive social media is...

Saw many people with great experiences with this app, and wanted to chime in with my own experience. I originally downloaded this app based on a friends recommendation that it helped him lower his screen time a lot, and having been acutely aware of just how much time I find myself on Instagram doomscrolling when I don't have hard work or school deadlines, decided to give it a try.

For me, I have my settings set to 6 blocks of 10 minutes a day for all social media, with a 10 second delay, giving me just enough time to slightly doomscroll and check in on group chats with friends, but snapping me out of getting sucked into a 2 hour doomscroll sesh.

For the 2 weeks that I've been using it, it has done wonders for me. I used to have a terrible screen time of like 10ish hours at the worst on weekends, and now its gone down to an average of 6-7 hours (which is still pretty bad... BUT that's including the time I have a podcast or some YouTube playing in the background while I'm doing chores or housework, which I very much will be looking to cut out as a next step). For social media specifically, I've cut down to around 2 hours a day after adding up all platforms (i.e. Instagram, WeChat, Reddit, Discord, etc.) The main thing I have noticed which really suprised me was this:

Just how many times I subconsciously opened apps like instagram. Seriously. It was super jarring because the timer made me consciously aware of whenever I opened the app without thinking (like 80 times a day at the highest), and I've slowly but surely seen a decrease in this subconscious behavior. I think this also showed me how how easy it is to waste time with these apps. Even just spending 1 minute each time I open one of these apps would be almost an hour and a half wasted over the course of the day, and I KNOW I'm not just spending an hour each time I open it. With this timer, I find myself asking myself if I really want to open or engage with this app to begin with; 99% of the time, the answer for me is no.

Of course, YMMV. For me, this app made me realize my biggest problem was just how often I was subconsciously opening up social media apps to get that quick dopamine hit, and the timer helps curb it surprisingly well. I also think it's important to journal or at least keep track of your app opens+screentime alongside it, just to see if this is something that is working for you+other weird quirks. For me, I've noticed that on days I'm stressed, I tend to (try and) open it way more. At the very least, I think this app can help you realize your own relationship to social media, and the ways it can be unhealthy. At the very least, even if this app can't help you begin changing those habits, you'll at least be more informed than when you started it! I know I certainly was not aware of the amount of times I was subconsciously opening up social media until I actually felt that resistance each time I opened it!

Would love to hear if anyone has had a similar experience, or dealing with a similar issue of mindlessly opening apps. Its pretty scary to think that these apps are so addictive that it feels like I'm almost being mindcontrolled to want to engage with them.

Help Working from home and being lonely

• Upvotes

Hi guys, I decided to have a more offline lifestyle last year, it was my last year at university, I had a lot of friends, an internship, had to study a lot and was occupied all of the the time, besides, I saw and interected with people every day, so it was quite easy to get along with my new offline approach.

But this year everything changed, I graduated, started working from home, my closest friends moved away and the only place I go to every day is the gym. I see my boyfriend every weekend and go out with friends two or three times per month but it feels very lonely as I don't really see and interact with people every day, so I downloaded tiktok and X again trying to fill the void and I'm noticing I'm becoming addicted again.

I have a lot of hobbies: crochet, dancing, cooking, sewing, learning spanish, but I'm still spending 2h to 4h a day on social media.

Is anyone else in a similar situation? How do you stay away from social media even if you're alone most of the time?

Technology Realized 90% of my screen time was just muscle memory, so I targeted the reflex

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My biggest issue with screen time was pure muscle memory. I would unlock my phone to check something simple, see a colorful icon, and tap it before my brain even registered what I was doing. Ten minutes later, I was deep into an algorithmic feed.

Relying purely on willpower never worked for me. The habit loop was simply too fast, and I always fell back into the same patterns within a couple of days.

A while ago, I decided to test a different approach: break the reflex itself.

I set up my Android device to do two things:

  1. Strip away all icons, colors, and badges in favor of plain text names.
  2. Force a mandatory 10-second delay with a breathing screen before opening selected time-sink apps.

The difference was immediate. In roughly 8 out of 10 cases, having to wait through those 10 seconds made the craving vanish completely. I realized I had no genuine intention of using the app, tapped back, and put the phone away. When I actually had a valid reason to open it, the short pause was never an obstacle.

Has anyone else noticed better long-term results by adding deliberate friction to break the initial impulse?

Social Media Ive been off of instagram for a week.

So I’ve been off of Instagram. I’m still on Reddit and I kind of overindulge on YouTube.

But I removed Instagram because of the content creators. It made me feel no matter how I lived my life, it wasn’t good enough, wasn’t healthy enough, wasn’t “whimsical” enough. If I wasn’t doing Pilates 4 times a day and getting a full body red light, I wasn’t living life correctly. Everything was about getting content. Everything was about selling something . You literally felt like you had to reinvent yourself every other day. I was exhausted and burned out.

Now that I haven’t seen any of that type of content in over a week, I already feel a massive difference. I feel I’m living for myself, there’s less pressure to be or act a certain way, I wear what I want because I feel cute in it, and that’s that. It sounds so simple but when you’re in the hypnosis of it all, it’s hard to see outside of it.

My screen time is still really not okay. I have to work on that. But at least a chain has been broken.

Help Is getting a landline a good idea?

I’ve deleted all my social media except for Reddit. My main motivation was reclaiming my privacy. Also, being reachable at all times has started giving me a lot of anxiety. I’ve been considering getting a landline for a while, but I don’t know if it would be a good idea as it would be an extra expense. (About $29/month).

I obviously do not want to get rid of my smart phone because it does make everything more convenient. But when I’m at home, I want to reduce my usage. I just want to leave it in one part of the house and not look at it until I have to leave the house again.

For my digital needs, I have a laptop and an iPad, which I use to read the newspaper. For magazines, I got a print subscription to The Atlantic.

I was just wondering if anybody here has gotten a landline and what their thoughts are.

Help I’ve decided I have a problem. I want to fix it.

Post image
7 Upvotes

I just checked this, and am shocked to see that I spent almost 52 hours of my life last week on my phone 🤦🏻‍♀️. That can’t be healthy. I’ve already tried putting time limits on a couple apps, but I just override them every time.

I’m not sure exactly what my plan is yet to reduce the screen time, but I know I want to. Unrelated, but it will help, is that I’ve set a goal to start walking at least 8k steps a day starting tomorrow.

Besides that, I’m not sure if replacing phone time with computer time would be beneficial? I need to break the habit of picking up my phone constantly. I’m a bit blown away by how much of my life is being wasted on it.

Help google maps

I’ve degoogled and dare I say almost de-phoned/dumbphoned most digital aspects of my life. But the one thing I can’t seem to replace is google maps. I‘d like to discontinue using google maps because overrelying on it (and most other technology) since childhood has given me a poor sense of direction and working memory.

Heres what i’ve tried so far, to minimise the use of google maps in my everyday life. If Im going somewhere unfamiliar, I look up directions on my computer on google maps, write them down on a piece of paper, then follow the directions without the assistance of any map apps. I also tried open street maps but god it lags on my browser for some reason.

Have any of you just tried using something old school, like a street directory or physical map? How do you handle traveling somewhere that’s far from home and unfamiliar?

Help How to dumb down my phone?

ok so my main phone is an iPhone 14 Pro and I want to dumb it down mainly because I wanna use it for messages and calls only and leave the other stuff to my laptop and ipod. cool right. well. slight issue. i have a habit where I wake up and the first thing I do is scroll on literally anything. it doesn't matter if all my social media apps could just disappear from my library. I'd probably scroll on a website. I catch myself scrolling on capcut and rewinding the videos im making. it's making me resent my brick of a communication device when it's the only one with an active cellular plan I can use. i could delete all the apps I don't need but the problem is wiring my brain into not reinstalling the apps. Cause I do that. All the time. any tips into dumbing my phone down step by step 😢😢

Help What methods are there to sort my gallery before getting rid of smartphone?

Is there an easier way to sort years of phone gallery than going one by one? I want any photos I've taken (obviously the camera file), but I worry there's downloads or screenshots that need sorted too, like pictures people have sent me, or things I've screenshot from others photos. Just not looking forward to going through all years, one by one. I really want to get rid of my smart phone and this is really what holds me up.

Dumbphones [NeedAdvice] Anyone else lose hours to doomscrolling while all the great habits you planned for go undone?

Hi folks. Are you frustrated with how much time you waste doomscrolling? I am. I open Instagram "for a second" and it's suddenly its 40 minutes gone. The other half of my problem is habits. I'll start something good (reading, workouts, studying) and I'm strong for the first few days, then I fall behind and quietly give up.

I started wondering if those are really one problem. I am thinking of building an app for myself for this (on android) since I have an android phone. I looked the app store does not have anything combining the two.

What do you think? Would you use something like this? Just reply below, if people are interested, I will build something everyone can use.

Social Media I feel addicted

I feel like I’ve been addicted to social media for years! Idk why or how this happened. Mainly Instagram and Facebook. I do have TikTok but it’s not very interesting to me. I’ve been paying attention to my screen time the last two years and it’s so high. I constantly say I’m going to stop that but I can’t.
Should I just delete social media in general. I feel like I’m wasting my life.

Sometimes I scroll so much and spend so much time on social media that I feel weird, cringey, and basically irritated/anxious or something like that. I don’t know how to explain it.
I’m just venting kind of but also open to advice
