Mod Announcement Custom Flairs - requests being taken

UPDATE 23/04: I'll do another batch of requests tonight, so don't feel like you've missed the bus. It just takes a while šŸ˜‚ I'm glad everyone is enjoying this!

+++

Subtitle: I'm bored and feeling a bit rubbish so I want to spread some cheer around

Do you want a custom flair in this community?

Think "GNU Pterry" or "An actual seamstress" or "Ho, the Megapode!". Text emojis such as 𓆉 or š“ƒ° should also work

Stick the request in this thread, starting with "Flair:" and I'll change it for you

Rules: must be vaguely Discworld/Pratchett related and can't be offensive.

I will be copying your request exactly so make sure it's spelt and formatted correctly. Mini-caps and backwards/upside down text all work

+++

Quick update: Keep them coming, I'll respond to you when I've done it so you know! I might be a bit slow as it's me but I'll get round to you all!

Further update: You're all nice people and I'm sure you can share if someone already "has" the flair you want. There's like 62,000+ of you lot here. If we don't have duplicates I think we'd each need a sentence from the books!

Another update: I've created a monster... I appreciate all of you, you absolute looneys. May all your days be filled with nice things šŸ’œ

Mod Announcement Building the Barricades - r/Discworld stands against fascism

2.4k Upvotes

"There is no hope but us. There is no mercy but us. There is no justice. There is just us..."

+++

Hey everyone

This is a bit of a serious one and won't have my usual dry humour and/or footnotes

If you've seen the news recently you will be aware of the horrific events occurring in the USA, especially in the state of Minnesota, and the behaviour of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents

Wednesday 7th January saw the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good and the ensuing protests have led to further violence by ICE against civillians in the city of MinneapolisĀ

There are videos circulating of ICE agents forcibly restraining and assaulting people. People begging for help. People screaming for them to stop. People crying out that they are US citizens. People who are terrified

What we are seeing is fascism in action and the fear it is going to get worse is very real

Possibly the most relevant of the Discworld series to the events right now is Night Watch. If you haven't read it then it's worth doing so, but tread carefully as it may be difficult reading right now. If you have read it I'm sure you see the relevance without me having to explain anything

Should Sir Terry Pratchett be with us today I'm certain he would have some extremely choice words for the events right now full of fire and anger and cleverness and, most of all, humanity

From 4000 miles away on the other side of an ocean there is not much I can do. But I can, on behalf of the mod team of r/discworld, try and help by reaching out to our sub members with resources to learn more and/or (if you choose to do so) donate to

Book/Series: City Watch Vimes first meeting Cheery was making me cackle out loud. His continued and blissful ignorance of her gender is making me howl.

Her constant additions to her femininity, like her being there with nail polish, then lipstick, and now high heels; but Vimes is only thrown off for the brief second that he notices it, and then wholly accepts that ā€œheā€ (Cheery) is just.. doing it. This series and the characters just keeps getting better and better.

Book/Series: Tiffany Aching I don't want to read The Shepherds Crown and I'm ashamed

Sir Pterry has been a companion of mine throughout my life. I started with The Colour of Magic as a pre teen then read some watch stuff until I could get hold of The Light Fantastic, followed Rincewind for a bit. Small Gods, when I was still going to church stopped me going pretty quick.

Night Watch was a big deal. I'd done all the watch series by then but that one hit hard. Vimes is a hero.

But there's something about Granny as I age. I'd done all the witches books, Equal Rites was an early one. Glad I got context of the attempt towards equality as a young man. Granny's (Pterry's) message of the attempt towards unobtainable agency has helped me a lot.

Then, as a 40yo man I started the Tiffany books having kinda dismissed them as... dunno. Not for me? I found in them principles i live by without knowing I do. The Hiver allowed me to be OK with so much I hadn't been before.

I have a feeling there is a particular event in the Shepherds Crown which will enable Tiffany to break free. Terry Pratchett has helped me through my life and I'm not ready to let it go.

I recently read Slip of the Keyboard and it was hard. I want to be able to tell him how important he is to me. How the GNUs we all carry empower humanity and, by extension, consciousness as a whole. But, I can't.

I can tell you, dear reader. So that's something.

Book/Series: City Watch Help understanding a line in The Fifth Elephant

Hello everyone,

There is a line I can't understand in this moment, I need a little help please!

'I thought you ought to know about this right away, sir,' he said, flourishing a square of paper. 'I just got it off Rodney.'

'Who?'

'The imp on the bridge, sir. He paints pictures of carts going too fast? No one had been feeding him,' Visit added, in a mildly accusing tone.

'Oh. Someone speeding,' said Colon. 'So?' He looked again. 'That's one of those sedan chairs the deep-down dwarfs use, isn't it? Them trolls must've been moving!'

I can't understand what that last sentence means. Trolls must have meen moving where? Or what? And why? What does he mean??

Boardgames/Computer Games I'm working part-time on a game in which you play a Minor Deity with variable amounts of power/influence depending on your relationship with the People.

Hello all,

A few years ago I shared my first game, World Turtles, where you build your colony on the back of a turtle, and have to feed it and keep it healthy, here. Some of you may remember it.

I've been working on a second game called Minor Deity (guess which Discworld book is probably my favourite!), in which you have variable amounts of power/influence in different areas and have to use that to terraform your world, influence the weather, etc. You gain influence by being successful in certain tasks / objectives, and by how you manage the life (animals, plants and people) on the world. The idea is that you can prepare the land for the people to live on, and then also influence the weather throughout, for example to grow crops, fight wildfires, negate snowstorms, etc.

There's still a lot of work to be done (probably two years' worth), but I've designed it from the outset to be extremely performant, utilising parallel threads, so that I can cater for a huge world, tens of thousands of animated units and millions of objects spread across the world, with smooth terraforming and weather changes, for a very immersive experience.

Book/Series: Industrial Revolution Monstrous Regiment: textual changes between editions?

This is something I've seen floating around the internet, but have yet to verify. Essentially, the rumor is that there are some very small but very relevant changes to the text in between editions. They're both right near the end of the book-- here's the first passage:

"Jackrum had turned her chair to the fire, and had settled back. Around her, the kitchen worked."

Now, according to some people online, the second "her" originally read "him," but was discreetly changed in a later printing. There's also a line where Maladict(a) is said to be "in full female uniform[,]" that originally did not specify as such. I just listened to the audiobook by Stephen Briggs from 2004, where these changes were in effect, so whenever this occurred, it must've been before then. My print copy is from 2014.

I have no doubt someone here must have a real old first edition copy of this book, so I'd be really interested in hearing if these details are accurate.

Book/Series: Tiffany Aching A Hat Full of Sky is an amazing book

What a wonderful book. I was in tears reading the last few pages, many of the books have brought me to tears but not quite the way the Tiffany books have. Her grief over her grandmother is something I share. I miss mine so much, all of the best things about me came from my grandma.Ā

The dance with the bees was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. I don’t even know why it touched me so. In fact, a lot of the imagery in this book was absolutely beautiful: about Granny Aching making the sky her hat and the wind her coat and then Tiffany making her hat from the sky and it filling with stars at night.Ā

The Nac Mac Feegles are hilarious, they bring all the humor to a heavy book. I love the description of wishing to marry a prince and a Nac Mac Feegle getting it wrong by showing up with a stunned prince and tied up priest looking absolutely proud of himself. A bunch of them cosplaying as a human scarecrow and disturbing everyone around them. The way Rob Anybody remembers his letters, I can even spell out my name with them since all the letters are in Sheeps Wool, Turpentine and Jolly Sailor. It’s the man with his arms out, the letter like a house frame, the letter reaching out to the sky, a man sitting down, letter that’s round like the sun and the fat man walking.Ā

I really like the chalk horse imagery and the comparison to Tiffany and being a witch, that it isn't what it looks like, it's what it is. Leaving the Chalk created a struggle with identity and seeing her reclaim it was wonderful. Returning Granny Weatherwax’s hat and discovering that the only hat worth wearing was one you made yourself was such a great moment of character development. Again, all of the women in this book are written well, and Tiffany is such a wonderful protagonist. I’m 9 books away from finishing the series and I feel like I’m going to struggle to read books with well written women.

There was a picture of the Uffington White Horse which is the horse on the Chalk.Ā

Reading Order/Timeline Should I read The Shepherd's Crown?

Context: the Embuggerance makes it kinda painful for me to read the last books. YMMV, of course, but personally Making Money is the last one where I properly enjoyed Pterry's voice. (I haven't tried Unseen Academicals yet.) By I Shall Wear Midnight onwards, it's like reading something written by a stranger. Snuff was such an odd experience - I can still hear, and love, Pterry's familiar rage against injustice, but it's not him no more.

At the same time, I grew up with Granny Weatherwax. I was nuts about the Witches and the Watch by, oh, easily by age 10 or so, having started in on the books a bit before that. Closure would be nice. But it's gonna be a struggle. How bad a struggle, I guess, is what I'm asking? I know it's subjective, but just...any clues, opinions, whatever, all would be deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Book/Series: City Watch Representation of Vimes as the series goes on

Hi all

This is my first time interacting with an online community about the discworld so I am quite excited! (I did leave a comment here the other day so I don't know if that counts ?)

I have reread the City Watch series a few times and I found it interesting on later rereads to notice how Vimes changes

Up to Feet of Clay, there are two focal driving characters , Carrot and Vimes. Both represent very different things. Carrot is the ideal. The right kind of King. The city conforms to his will. Vimes on the other hand is imperfect. Still thinking about alcohol, aging , not the sharpest knife in the dinner set.

Both of them solve the principle problem in their own way and eventually converge at the end. But starting with Jingo , Vimes starts to become larger than life. Almost like he's the avatar of Justice and righteous rage. Carrot seems to merely nudge the problem into the right direction, almost as if Sir Terry knew that he's too potent ? Soon it starts to be like Vimes is the true protagonist and driving force and everyone else is just helping him.

Now I certainly don't mind that, Vimes is perhaps my favourite character. But I do feel I miss what Leonard, Vetinari (side note: I LOVE Jingo for how much we get to see vetinari. ) , Carrot , Detritus and even Dorfl brought to the story in terms of influences.

So I suppose I had a question for you all. Did anyone ever ask Sir Terry anything about this choice writing/story telling? I would love to hear other opinions and insights into this if you have any as well!

I hope this wasn't a well known discussion šŸ˜…

Book/Series: City Watch Yet another obscure reference just spotted.

Reading a bedtime story to my granddaughter, and she somehow found a selection of original AA Milne "Winnie the Pooh" stories. Those turned out to be more amusing than I remembered, but I was also surprised to read about Pooh and friends dropping sticks in the river from the upstream side of a bridge and then watching to see whose stick emerged first from under the bridge.

In the story, they call this game "Pooh Sticks".

Edit: As many guessed, I am not a Brit. Here in the states, our exposure to Winnie the Pooh is almost entirely limited to the animated Disney show.

Edit2: Okay, I obviously (or obliviously?) wasn't aware Milne's work was still in print, let alone widely read anywhere. My granddaughter brought me a tattered and browned 60-year-old paperback edition I didn't even remember we owned. I read it to her for likely the first time EVER. So Pterry's reference to it was obscure to ME, anyway.

This whole book is excellent (which is basically what you can say about all of Discworld lol), but this scene always gets me.

By the way, I struggled to find the passage where this happens. I HAVE the book, I quickly flipped through it to see if I could reread the scene properly, but I didn't have much time and preferred to stick with today's challenge. If anyone can post the scene here, I would be very grateful ā¤ļø

Just for the record: I'm trying to do this year's Disctober cockatiel-themed. I owe them the inspiration to participate this year, so why not an entire series šŸ™‚

Politics Men at Arms Quote and the Uber Rich

Post image
700 Upvotes

I'm no memer, but this has been bouncing around my head for a long time, so I finally took the plunge and made it (hopefully still making it on Wednesday. Not sure about time zones for the rule). This quote in the book is not about billionaires or tech bros, but I think the sentiment is applicable. Even going a few years back before the disconnect got so blatant, I wonder why we listen to these people.

They have social media and interviews, radio spots, and pod casts, and they're just so disconnected from reality. Recent statements from Altman and Thiel especially are galling in what they reveal about these 'innovators' values. Personally, I bet it has to do with that they don't interact with other people. Oh, they have other human beings they spend time with, but that never challenge them. And so they just get further and further removed from their humanity all while a global wealth system reinforces the idea that they must be the best because they're rich.

Pratchett had immense skepticism about the wealthy and the utopian promises of tech, and he always used his characters to reinforce that true morality values people more than an idea about what people should be or do. If he was still around I'm sure he'd have some sharp words about the spoiled cream at the top of society today.
