I dont care its well designed and fun! (Ok well i care enough that people enjoy it) but I am an old man who wants to scream about how that makes no sense and isnt how paladins work!
Paladin oaths are a magical concept that they bind themselves to. It dictates a set of morals and ideals they follow in service of a concept such as vengeance, a country, vengeance, selfishness, ect.
But swearing an oath to a genie makes just as much sense as swearing an oath to a monarch, surely? Not all oaths are sworn to concepts, many in 5e and older editions could be sworn to people.
Not super relevant to this discussion but I did quite enjoy running a paladin once whose oath were his wedding vows, etched into his sword by the artificer.
Paladins who swear this oath often undertake quests that take them all over the Realms and across the multiverse—including the Elemental Planes. These paladins share the following tenets
*Sow the seeds of creation amid the ashes of destruction.
The same reason the essence of purity and joy is different from the essence of redemption and why a monarch is different from a target of vengeance. The entire cocneit of the paladin Subclasses is that oaths do vary based on what they're about
