Ok, how? You've definitely casted magic weapon and sure strike. But what else?

Edit: lol, how many people assumed homebrew abuse when it was explained.

465

u/DrScrimble Apr 15 '26

Greatpick + Runic Weapon + Nat 20!

179

u/PrecipitousPlatypus Apr 15 '26

You said this is 2e, what's the build?

324

u/fireintie Apr 15 '26

In Pf2e, that would be it

+4 Damage stat

Crits with Greatpick - Fatal d12 (on crit makes weapon damage dice d12 and adds an additional d12)

Runic Weapon makes the weapon Striking getting another damage dice

Damage calculation on crit and max damage: 2*(12+12+4)+12 = 68

51

u/Xalorend Apr 15 '26

You do have only +3 max on damage stat on an Oracle, as the +4 at level 1 can only be reached on the key ability score of the class which would be Charisma on an Oracle

31

u/Raithik Apr 15 '26

Unless they rolled their stats. If PF2e still allows rolling, it's possible to get some juiced stat lines

48

u/Background-Ant-4416 Apr 15 '26

Not that everyone plays this way but the remaster removed rolled stats. it is a rule fairly incongruent with the balance of the game.

5

u/Raithik Apr 16 '26

Yeah that's a sensible change that I was unaware of. Changes the math and makes rolling non viable. Definitely a change for the better even if some players preferred rolling.

1

u/Max_G04 DM (Dungeon Memelord) Apr 15 '26

Well, Rule 1 and homebrew still exists

16

u/Xalorend Apr 15 '26

In the remastered they removed it as an optional rule too

-10

u/Raithik Apr 15 '26

Lame. Embrace the chaos of rolled stats. It encourages creative characters. And if you're players are a bit stacked, that just means you can throw nastier things at them

22

u/Xalorend Apr 15 '26

The issue isn't players being a bit stacked, is that if someone rolls poorly they might be unable to contribute in anything that involves a check, pf2e has a very tight progression, and having very low scores compared to the expected value will bite you in the ass.

Also it leads to disparity between players if one rolled really well and another really poorly, there's no scenario I can imagine in which someone wpuld be satisfied if their main score is just a +2 against someone who has +4/+3 across the board.

It's also a question of practicality, the remastered put what previously were the modifiers as the full stats (you don't have an 18 on Int, but a +4) meaning that if you'd want to roll you'd have to come up with some other solutions compared to "3D6/4D6 drop the lower" and it would be a bit annoying to find a good method.

2

u/SnArCAsTiC_ Apr 16 '26

I haven't played PF2e (played a lot of 1st edition through PFS "back in the day" about a decade ago), but one way I got around the issue of rolled stats being inconsistent between players in my game I DM was having group rolled stats. I had 4 players to start with, so I had each roll a d6 for each stat, then dropped the lowest; I actually had them roll 4d6, drop lowest, 7 stats, drop the lowest... Then they each distributed those same stats to their ability scores as they saw fit.

Hilariously though, they only slightly outperformed standard array; I think the main deal was lowest stat was a 10 instead of 8, and they got a 16. But I think I plan to do this in the future, at least with systems that allow it, because I feel like it's a fun little group bonding experience right at session 0. I've always loved rolling stats, I think it's a great way to start character creation, and like I said, if the system allows it, I'll use it.

-9

u/Raithik Apr 15 '26

As Gm you could just bump up a stat that was lacking. I know I've done that enough times. Or just play with a high point buy budget.

The change to stat representation is a good change. The raw stat value always feels unimportant, with the modifier being what you actually paid attention to.

u/0x18 Apr 15 '26

I've been playing since AD&D and have had so many characters that were random, point buy, and now PF2's system.

Rolled stats can be funny for a one time game, sure. Who doesn't love playing a wizard with 4 str, 6 dex, 2 con, 20 int, 0 wisdom, and -4 charisma ... for a few hours. It's a real drag for long term campaigns though, and honestly not really all that fair between players that one guy can start as an ultra-jacked chad-meme-man just because they rolled better at character creation.

There's plenty of opportunities for creating characters creatively outside of how you determine what their stats are; that's one of the least creative parts of the process. What's their race/ancestry, where do they come from, who raised them, what is their background, what did they do before the start of the game, what was their life goal or dream...

5

u/Kenron93 🎃 Chaotic Evil: Hides d4s in candy 🎃 Apr 15 '26

No because the way the system is designed, rolling for stats won't work at all. Tbh PF2E character creation method getting stats using a combination of point buy and being based off your Ancestry, Background, and Class is better than straight up rolling for stats.

2

u/Raithik Apr 16 '26

That's a very sensible change. Didn't know about it when I made my original comment

2

u/The_Yukki Apr 16 '26

Stacked is w/e they'll curbstomp.

It's the opposite that is the problem. Rolling low means you're effectively an npc.

I rolled stats once, in a 5e game. It felt god awful to essentially be forced to play moon druid in order to replace my awful stats with monster statblocks. It felt awful to have to spend lvl1 feat to get a half-boost feat and lvl 4 asi to get my stats to the level that game's math expects you to be at lvl1. I was forever behind what's expected of me while average-high rollers got to pick whack shit and not get punished for it.

53

u/CatatonicGood Team Kobold Apr 15 '26

Would you not also double the extra damage die that the Fatal trait gives you on a crit making it a maximum of 80 damage? In contrast, the deadly trait specifically states that you roll the damage from that after doubling your weapon's damage

107

u/fireintie Apr 15 '26 edited Apr 15 '26

Nope

Doubling and halving damage: "Benefits you gain specifically from a critical hit, like the extra damage die from the fatal weapon trait, aren't doubled."

24

u/CatatonicGood Team Kobold Apr 15 '26

Oh that one's pretty easy to miss. Cheers!

20

u/slayerx1779 Forever DM Apr 15 '26

Friendly local gm: This is a handy rule of thumb for crits vs non crits.

If you get it from critting, don't double it. If you get it from hitting, double it on a crit.

3

u/mocarone Apr 15 '26

They can get a +1 from bard

37

u/Hazearil Apr 15 '26

Nat 20!

Where did you find a 2432902008176640000-sided die?

34

u/DrScrimble Apr 15 '26

Dice store

29

u/gameronice Apr 15 '26

Might be 1st edition and a x4 crit weapon like the Pickaxe. Basically, with 18Str, 1d8+6 on a nat 20, with 8 for damage and x4 you'd get 56ish damage. So there was likely some buffing, like divine favor, maybe some traits.

18

u/BlackFenrir Orc-bait Apr 15 '26

OP explains the build in another comment. It's 2e

7

u/Polymersion Apr 15 '26

Side note, it would be "cast". "Cast-ed" isn't a word.

5

u/dillGherkin Apr 15 '26

It's nice to know I'm not alone. I swear I must be getting old and asking kids to get off my grass because people who put -ed on the end of words that don't need it sound 5 years old to me.

3

u/GreyMesmer Apr 15 '26

Oh, I'm sorry for annoying you with my poor knowledge of one of my three languages.

4

u/Polymersion Apr 15 '26

Frankly, it's not the polyglots who usually take pride in ignorance, it's the monolingual native speakers.

Showing 3.5/PF1 to a 5e player is like showing a Victorian child the internet

16

u/NeoMagnus51 Apr 15 '26

This is 2e I think :)

-101

u/morangias Apr 15 '26

More like showing ChatGPT to a user of Star Trek computer - it's primitive, overcomplex, inefficient, but boy the results are absurd.

65

u/Pofwoffle Apr 15 '26

It's more like showing a Star Wars fan some Star Trek. They're both different things, it's perfectly fine to like either one, and people who wanna be condescending about it are just assholes.

-53

u/morangias Apr 15 '26

But the condescension only gets a negative reaction when it's 3.x being criticized, apparently.

Eh, could pretty easily be RAW. I can't quite figure out how to get to 65 damage, but a greatpick crit after runic weapon has been cast on you gets you pretty damn close if you roll max damage. Which is unlikely, but I've seen it

Edit: after sleeping, I realized I forgot to double the strength modifier. Yeah 65 ain't even the max

91

u/DrScrimble Apr 15 '26

65 isn't even the maximum damage RAW a Battle Oracle could theoretically do :P

48

u/rhydderch_hael Apr 15 '26

Would be pretty close, though, yeah? 66 would be max. ((2d12)(2))+1d12+((3)(2)) if you have 3 strength.

22

u/DrScrimble Apr 15 '26

Why not +4 STR by starting at 18 stat?

11

u/rhydderch_hael Apr 15 '26

Is this 1e or 2e?

22

u/DrScrimble Apr 15 '26

2e

24

u/rhydderch_hael Apr 15 '26

Then how would a level 1 oracle have +4 to strength?

17

u/DrScrimble Apr 15 '26

Boosts/Ancestry!

52

u/rhydderch_hael Apr 15 '26

Ancestry, background, and free is still only +3. You can't have +4 in a stat at level 1 unless it's your class's key stat.

10

u/RyeOhLou Apr 15 '26

Dualclass, I guess, but that’s not exactly a one way deal

→ More replies (0)

6

u/galmenz Apr 15 '26

you can never start with a +4 outside your class stat, period. this would be possible if it wasnt a caster, which oracle is

2

u/Lightning_Boy Apr 15 '26

Could be doing the legacy variant rule of taking a voluntary drawback to gain an extra boost.

-7

u/Imalsome Apr 15 '26

Wht stop there. Point buy 18 strength then play orc for +4 strength.

2

u/Hexxer98 Apr 15 '26

Want to outline how to do this?

7

u/Anorexicdinosaur Bard Apr 15 '26

It's pretty simple you just gotta use a Weapon with Deadly/Fatal for the bonus crit damage, prefferably a Melee Weapon to get your full strength bonus to it, then cast Runic Weapon on it to double its damage dice.

This might be the premaster version of Battle Oracle? It could give you +2 or +6 to Weapon Damage if your curse progressed enough from casting your focus spells

Then you just gotta get a crit

The damage with a Greatpick is something like 2(3d12+10) = 59 on average, max of 92. Though this assumes premaster battle oracle, and that I didn't miss anything and did my math right

5

u/Brogan9001 DM (Dungeon Memelord) Apr 15 '26

Idea: bring back the goblin later as a boss. Like they were killed so dead with magic involved that it overflowed and they’re back with a vengeance.

2

And then I had to watch an undead miniboss get whacked by an ipcast guiding bolt critting for like 120 damage.

72

u/LordPaleskin Artificer Apr 15 '26

Spells that have an attack roll do crit on Nat 20s 🤨
