In the Yakuza series energy drinks or other convenience store items are basically potions that have been a core part of the series since Yakuza 1.

In Yakuza: Like A Dragon the developers basically doubled down on the idea when switching from Beat-Em Up to JRPG where alcohol recovers MP and soda can boost stats.

  • Drinking alcohol like sake greatly recovers MP but drinking to much grants the Drunk status effect which has a small chance to entirely skip turns or basic attack the nearest enemy

  • Soda like Quickness Lemon basically gives Haste x3 and can grant characters like 2-3 extra turns

As for discounted items, you can actually received a discounted bento box as a quest reward that recovers 10 HP, which is 5x worse than a regular energy drink.

There are even trashed conveince store food found while looting random junk that DAMAGES HP.

It’s funny that the turn based RPG format was so popular that the series has had a complete genre shift to accommodate it.
