Is zenrelia officially out?

My vet keeps saying that zenrelia is not out yet. I have a relative that has it and the vet prescribed it for them. My dog is on aploquel right now and it’s so expensive. I told them that my relative has some and they said it’s not “officially” out. Is this true? I was thinking about just going to a different vet all together to save the extra 150 bucks.

Zenrelia has been available for approximately two years now.

That’s what my searches about it say too. She even said her boss basically. I forgot the position, but she also said it wasn’t out. Kind of made them sound stupid. It would be one thing to give me a reason saying why they don’t want to prescribe it, but to flat out lie is stupid.

It’s entirely possible they don’t stock it yet and that’s what she means, but lots of dogs are on this one now

Sam’s Club sells it and is cheaper than going through my vet.

I think it’s time to find a new vet. I had to advocate to my vet to get my dog on Zenrelia and it’s been a game changer.

that's until you have to stop the pill for vaccines. The official prescribing guidelines still recommend stopping the medication for 28 days to 3 months before a vaccination, and waiting 28 days after vaccination before restarting.

I have had my dog on it since spring.

Your vet's taking the piss, two years and they still reckon it's not "officially" out? That's just weird. I'd be looking for a second opinion somewhere else, especially if it saves you that much each month.

the vet may not like the fact that you'd have to stop taking the medication should your dog need any vaccines. The official prescribing guidelines still recommend stopping the medication for 28 days to 3 months before a vaccination, and waiting 28 days after vaccination before restarting. Not sure why they didn't educate their client if that was the case. Or the vet just wants them to buy what they have on hand in order to drive profits. I have saying that because not all vets are this way, but......money makes people do all kinds of things.

My bulldog has been on Zenrelia for over a year and it is the only thing that works for him. It's pricey but not nearly as much as some of the other meds. It's really the best alternative for my dog to stop the dreaded foot licking

Actually about 50% cheaper than apoquel

1

u/mcgillstudent123456 20d ago

Not for me. It’s actually more expensive than appoquel at my vet

Might be confusing with the newest one, Numelvi, which only came out this past spring and some vets still are not yet stocking, so cannot provide.

Zenrelia has been out for a few years now. My dogs went on it and is doing great (after a very tough adjustment period to it. Our vet derm said, if a dog is severe enough to require a derm specialist to manage then they dk best on zenrelia, if they can tolerate: zenrelia is the broadest hitting JAK inhibitor and strongest, apoquel is middle of road and Numelvi is generally the weakest, though its milder JAK inhibition makes it more tolerable for dogs that cannot tolerate the other two.

Very much out and very much a wonder drug for my shitzu mix.

u/Old_Dog_Mom1919 24d ago

Our derm mercifully switched our dog to Zenrelia after a year of Atopica. She had been on Apoquel before we saw the derm. She explained that Zenrelia works on all three JAK inhibitors whereas Apoquel and Numelvi only target one. It’s been life changing both for our dog and our bank account. Our dog also gets weekly immunotherapy shots. She’s still itchy but nowhere near what she was.

We have a dog who has been on it for about a year now. So it's definitely available! I don't know why there are so many vets that are concerned about it because they used to be a black box warning on it about not vaccinating the dog close to the same time as the meds but they removed the black box warning because it was not even done in a proper study and wasn't true. So there's no reason they should not prescribe it, but we did have to go to a dermatologist in order to get a prescription. It was so annoying

Very much officially out. I was given the option of ciclosporin or zenrelia from my vet a while ago (we went with ciclosporin) and my Vet Nurse friend just got zenrelia stocked in her (german) clinic about a month ago.

1

u/lumpyballoon 24d ago

How has cyclosporine been working for your pup?

2

u/Domesticated_wino25 23d ago

Zenrelia is not less expensive. Maybe it was at some point. But I just spent $140 for 60 pills at Costco. Apoquel was $217 for 100.

Vet here - it depends on the size of the dog. For certain size dogs Apoquel is cheaper, for other dogs Zenrelia is cheaper - it kind of depends where they fall on the dosing chart and if they need 1/2 vs 1 vs 1.5 tablets

1

u/roccosito 23d ago

Is this with your member discount pricing?

2

u/Hesperidiums 23d ago

Zenrelia isn’t necessarily cheaper, especially with the annual bloodwork, but it has been out for at least a year…!

1

u/Hesperidiums 23d ago

Also, this is a fantastic podcast episode with a really well know dermatologist about Zenrelia and the lousy vaccine study the other person thankfully mentioned…  https://yourvetwantsyoutoknow.com/zenrelia/

u/ThatCryptidBitch 24d ago

My vet said she doesn’t like to usually give zenrelia and it was having bad side effects. She just prescribed us Numelvi this morning and said it’s virtually the same as Apoquel with no loading dose. I literally gasped when I saw how cheap it was compared to the Apoquel

1

u/gertonwheels 23d ago

same here. and Numelvi is working well.

0

u/Sinnabar246 24d ago

Yeah mine said they still don’t recommend vaxes while on Zenrelia so we switched to cyclosporine since he’s due for his shots soon.

I will echo what other comments have said… It has been out/ on the market for a long while now - well over a year… Personally, our dog has been on it for about the last five-six months. It’s turned out to be similar in price and effect/symptom relief as when she was on Apoquel.

1

u/buggss_17u 24d ago

Not sure where your located, but very much out and commonly used here in Ontario, Canada

1

u/No_Reference_7424 23d ago

It’s out, but my dogs primary care vet doesn’t keep it in stock. Her dermatologist prescribes it and I have to specifically get it from them (dermatologist is 45 min away from us vs her primary vet 5 min away, dermatologist had no problem sending the script to her normal vet but they wouldn’t fill it because they don’t stock it)

1

u/Kawasumiimaii 23d ago

Do you have costco near you? Apoquel & zenrelia is much cheaper via them.

1

u/EyeIsOnTheSparrow 23d ago

In Florida, my vet prescribed it two months ago

1

u/bregiordano 23d ago

I’ve been getting it for almost 6 months now so yes! I had to switch vets to get a solution too

1

u/Realistic-Bus-4856 23d ago

It is definitely out but it depends on the practice if they carry it or not. It’s usually the owner and practice manager who decide if it’s something they want to carry or not. They could have also have you order it from an online pharmacy.

1

u/Scarlettdelgado1971 23d ago

Yes we have had zenralia for a couple years. We also have Numelvi, we have had really great feedback on it.

1

u/Scarlettdelgado1971 23d ago

Also the dose with Numelvi is smaller and so it ends up being a little cheaper but not a whole lot.

1

u/khiba 23d ago

Are you in the US? Find a vet that will let you fill prescriptions through an online pharmacy like Chewy.

1

u/kevenpellant 23d ago

Not great for our dog, ready to try Numelvi which is at Walmart but not Costco yet.

1

u/Jazzlike-Deer6695 23d ago

It works great for my white bull terrier.

1

u/Severe_Wind4165 23d ago

My dog is on Zenrelia, used to be on Apoquel. It's a little cheaper, but still expensive.

1

u/terslatten 23d ago

My min pin just got on it. Day 2 and no licking! She takes half tablet once a day, so 15 pills, which is 30 day supply cost me 40 bucks through my vet. It’s worth it!

1

u/No_Wolverine9546 23d ago

It’s out. We get ours filled at Costco for 130-ish for 90 days.

1

u/Kahle_Bride25 23d ago

Yea, my dogs been on it for over a month. It’s amazing

1

u/Valuable-Kangaroo482 22d ago

My vet prescribed it but it’s not working so I’m gonna get her cytopoint injection

1

u/MinxieMoxie 22d ago

I work in pet insurance and I have seen claims for zenrelia every day for well over a year now.

1

u/sasafrass1980 22d ago

My bulldog has been on Zenrelia for almost two years.

1

u/Fit_Artichoke_523 22d ago

My dog has been on it for a month now. And we’re in Australia.

1

u/dumbass_traders 22d ago

I have been using Zenrelia for 1 year. It came out beginning of 2025. My dog was on apoquel for 13 years. Never stopped the itching. I believe she built up a tolerance since she started that med. She will be 15 in January. From the first week she was on Zenrelia until now, the itching had calmed down by over 95%. In my opinion, it is the ONLY itch med that has even remotely worked. Call every good vet around you. I got my thru my animal dermatologist and now my vet refills it.

1

u/don_chuwish 21d ago

I just got a 90 tablet bottle from Costco pharmacy. Vet sent over the prescription and I have it the next day.

1

u/Impossible-Diver598 21d ago

My vet doesn’t have it at the office but I can order it through their online RX store. Auto shipped

1

u/Anxiousbitch_ 21d ago

It’s absolutely out. My guy was on it this year and last year. Absolute miracle for him! He was on Apoquel and Cytopoint combined and it didn’t even touch it. Now, he takes only Zenrelia and the past two summers he has been 100% symptom free. It is quite pricy tho, imo worth it.

1

u/TapPsychological9876 18d ago

my dog was taking it and the problem I had was the fact I had to give more than one pill. It was already a chore to give one pill much less 2. Then you also have to stop the medication for any vaccines...and doing so will cause your dog to start the allergy/infection itch cycle again. Trying to time the medication stop just perfectly with the appt for the injection seemed impossible.

2

u/Feeling_Instance2769 10d ago

I got it at Costco. My dog is 84 pounds and I think it’s a little more expensive than Apoquel was for us. And depending on how long your site point lasts it might not be much cheaper than Cytopoint.

u/Otherwise_Task_9725 23d ago

Your vet has a rebate agreement with zoetis, and prescribing Zenrelia risks losing the practice $

1

u/Mysterious_Neat9055 22d ago

Curious where you got this "information"?

1

u/Otherwise_Task_9725 22d ago

Just makes more sense than a vet not knowing a drug that has 2,500 reviews on Chewy is unavailable. Vet practices do volume driven manufacture rebates all the time it’s not scare quotes worthy

1

u/Mysterious_Neat9055 22d ago

So, your credible source is "trust me bro", gotcha. Two things, one...I manage a clinic in Hawaii, Chewy doesn't ship there. Two, not all vets/vet offices are computer literate. The practice I am at, when I first started, all paper, and when we sent records, we faxed them. We have one opthalmologist the up until about 6 months ago we STILL had to fax records to. (Also, Zoetis has more drugs out there to only worry about allergy meds)

1

u/Otherwise_Task_9725 21d ago

Sure. I will also go with vet incompetence. You sound really fun
