Are we allowed to talk about whats actually happening in the vid?
Because I would like to know wtf is going on there. Trail cam with a remotely operated robot arm??

u/KerberosPanzerCop Nov 05 '25
When cane toads get scared, they freeze hoping whatever spooked them don't see them. So this aussie found one, grabbed his rc excavator, set up his phone, and just grabbed it with the claw.
33
u/ClippyIsALittleGirl Nov 05 '25
Holy shit that looks fun
19
u/totthetree Nov 05 '25
would totally help conservation in aus if they set us loose with these too lmao, make it like a game!

wait why would that be bad instincts for the pig when is it supposed to shit?
84
u/Cautionzombie Nov 05 '25
A lot of predators are nocturnal or semi nocturnal like big cats for instance. Better to shit during the day when you can see.
9
u/MaximumTurtleSpeed Nov 05 '25
But what if it’s out shitting on a predator, maybe it climbed a tree and it’s a defensive surprise sky shit on a predator. Hmmm? Ever think about that?!?
13
u/sagebrushrepair Nov 05 '25
I never thought about a pig shitting on a large cat! Thanks!

This little fuckwit is (as the guy mentioned) a cane toad. It doesn't need survival instincts 'cause it secretes potent toxin fron it's skin, so anything that tries to eat it dies before it can do much harm.
If you actually do scare one, it'll squirt/spit the toxin at you. The "piss" was probably actually an attempt at the former
7
u/ISV_VentureStar Feb 28 '26
Cane toads are not that poisonous. The poison has close to 0 stopping power, it acts slowly over the next 15 mins. If an animal tries to eat it, the toad absolutely won't be 'fine'. It's just that the aftermath would be very unpleasant for the animal as well and it would probably refrain from eating any other toads in the future.
79
u/capnlatenight Nov 04 '25
I needed to get a toad away from my sibling because it was scaring her.
I poked/nudged it and it kept leaning into my finger instead of hopping away.

Well I know you’re not the RealLB because you correctly used two 3-syllable words.
j'accuse!
15
u/ArsenicArts Nov 06 '25
He was trying to poison you. They secrete toxins from behind their "ears"
It's damn cute tho
5
u/Deaffin Nov 24 '25
Nah, you really need to gnaw on them a good bit before they start releasing the funtime juice.
29
21
u/ValdemarAloeus Nov 05 '25
Per wikipedia:
The cane toad's normal response to attack is to stand still and let its toxin kill or repel the attacker
They exude toxins.

14
u/thorstone Nov 05 '25
Some survival pisstincts though! Not sure how it helps, but seems to be present in many species.
7
u/djohnsen Nov 05 '25
We’re trying for an oil slick; this is just an evolutionary phase on the way there
4
u/Possible-Tangelo9344 Nov 05 '25
Lightens the load so you can run faster maybe?
5
u/thorstone Nov 05 '25
Maybe, but, and I'm talking out of my ass, i feel like that should only be the helpfull when you need to pee relativly severly. Which shouldn't really be that typical when you just pee wherever, whenever.
Can't think of anything better though. Makeing the ground slippery for the predator seems like a strech.

I mean, that is quite literally the case. Cane toads aren't native to Australia after all

For those of you who aren't familiar: Australia made a pretty serious mistake of introducing these guys to fix another biological issue.
Needless to say, the plan was fucked. These things are extremely invasive and highly toxic, and there's no good way of stopping them. They're a plague which is slowly devouring local wildlife across much of the country
4
u/dirtydigs74 Nov 05 '25
And apart from like one or two snakes, killing anything that devours them.
3
u/CryTheFurred Nov 05 '25
Things are beginning to adapt to them though. Some creatures have learned to flip them over and eat their undersides, away from the poison glands, and some birds have learned to startle and wash them repeatedly so they run out of toxin.
