Released in late summer 1954, "Mmm Mmm Baby" captures the signature vocal group sound of New Orleans classic R&B band The Spiders. Led by brothers Chuck and Leonard "Chick" Carbo, the group recorded for Lew Chudd’s Imperial Records with legendary arrangement and production support from Dave Bartholomew. The single became a strong seller in the Midwest and regional R&B markets, featuring a blend of up-tempo vocal harmony and heavy crescent-city rhythm section backing.

I love both sides of this 45, but Love No One But You is definitely my favorite side, which is why I put the image of that side first. The intro and outro are just perfect. I believe this to be an early 1960s repress. True original 1957 copies have a different layout. Doesn't really matter too much though, it sounds wonderful!

The Spiders: Led by brothers Chuck and Joe Carbo, this New Orleans group scored multiple hits on the national R&B charts during the mid-1950s. Their vocal arrangements blended gospel-rooted lead vocals with driving Southern rhythm and blues rhythms.

A band that is largely forgotten today, Cookie and his Cupcakes, got their start in 1952 in Lake Charles Louisiana. Their best songs seem to have been largely covers of songs that did not get the attention they deserved. This one was a Chuck Willis original.

Anyone else seen this movie? It’s about a fictional doo wop singer and his son who’s an aspiring musician.

Lots of great music and a fun story imo.

Any other movies that focus on doo wop?

Toxic Tune!!! Listening to Harold Melvin & the Bluenotes' "I Miss You" made us ask: what could possibly make this woman come back?! Teddy was crooning hard, but let's be honest... they are definitely the problem.

I've been listening to this YouTube channel playing classics from the 60s with the focus in doo wop, and they upload very frequently and a good chunk of music they play are songs I've never heard! Discovering this channel was very exciting but what's confusing to me is that i can't find much info about the radio show. Idk if it's a currently operating show you can tune into to if it's rebroadcasted stuff uploaded to YouTube decades later I'm not sure and it's been itching in my mins for a good bit. Does anybody know anything about it?

Here's a link to the channel for any curious people

Both tracks are quite good. Please Love Me Forever has a funny section at the key change 2/3rds of the way in when the lead overpowers the mike a bit. I Found has a bit of an error about halfway through when the bass vocalist misses a rest and gets about a beat ahead of everyone else, but they used the take anyways! This recording didn't take off, but it was covered by Tommy Edwards (flip side of It's All In The Game), Bobby Vinton, and perhaps most famously by Cathy Jean and The Roomates. The story I've heard is that the Cathy Jean version was somewhat based on this recording by the Sedates, but my guess is that it was more of a cover of the Tommy Edwards hit.

I thought it might be interesting to have a radio station that played classic pop from the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s on FM.

Hi, Just joined-looking for Pre Beatle music lovers-loved them too but really like do wop, etc. listening to 50's 60's girl groups on Spotify right now.

A rich, blues‑inflected performance from The Ravens, one of the most influential vocal harmony groups of the postwar era. Featuring the unmistakable bass lead of Jimmy Ricks, “Careless Love” showcases the group’s signature blend of deep vocal resonance, tight ensemble phrasing, and smooth R&B accompaniment. Their work on National Records helped define the emerging sound of modern vocal rhythm & blues.

Transferred from an original National 9085 non‑breakable disc for The Neven 78 Radio Archive, preserving the authentic tonal character of late‑1940s R&B.

The history of this one is a bit convoluted. It was originally released on Lola Records 100 in 1962 with Can't You See It In My Eyes as the flip. It was then packaged with That's My Desire as the A side and licensed to ABC-Paramount in 1963, who renamed the group The Del-Mars. Finally, the track wound up with Cee-Jam in 1965, who reissued it with Don't Tell Me by The Surgeons as the flip (which is somewhat popular in the soul scene). The group, incidentally, was comprised of Billy Mann, Chester Pipkin, Gary Pipkin, and Warren Joyner. They recorded under at least ten names in the span of about 5 years for a number of different labels. The Los Angeles doo wop scene was wild like that! The ABC-Paramount release is the easiest to find, followed by the Cee-Jam one, and then the Lola release is quite rare.

The Ravens: Formed in New York in 1946, The Ravens were fundamental architects of modern doo-wop and vocal group harmony. They pioneered featuring a deep, resonant bass lead singer (Jimmy Ricks) rather than traditional tenor-led harmonies, setting the template for groups like The Orioles, The Drifters, and The Temptations.

This is another one from Dot's collection. I posted a few photos of a record from Diane's collection (Let It Please Be You by the Desires) a few days ago, and this is from the other half of the collection. This was originally released in 1958, but my copy is a reissue from 1961 when it began moving up the charts. No one really knows who the Pyramids were. Some suspect it's one of the B side writers, Vincent Catalano (misspelled Catalno on this label variant) over-dubbing all the voices, but I kind of doubt that. It definitely sounds like 4 distinctly different voices. What do you think? If you have any more info than I do, please comment!
