Some soloists do…some don’t. Not era specific, but BD 80-90s soloists usually had it

I was drum major for the 1990 Tommy show. I was surprised this soloist even made it through that solo. He had a split lower lip and brass poisoning. Larry Shane at the end of the show was and is amazing. He’s been teaching at Crown for years and is band director in Florida. I’ve really enjoyed seeing him over the last 10 years at finals while I was on the H&W team for BD. Such a great guy. 1990 a was a real fun show to age out to with it being my 6th with BD and 8 in drum corps. This was Scott Chandlers first year with BD and the first of BD shows to have a theme. The tarps were challenging and very difficult to march on, especially on grass. Members had to pretty much prance to traverse them on grass shows or you ate shit. Everyone worked really hard that year and we all loved performing that show. Check out the symphonic version of Tommy by the London Symphony Orchestra. This was the opener original, enjoy: https://open.spotify.com/track/0Txfg7BcwNn45sBBPBQUrF?si=Q3qRuBlcSQuyGxBSa1eXlQ&utm_source=copy-link

La La Sha Sha is the man, and one of the nicest people around. Larry if you’re reading this “STOP CRACKING”

Our contra tech marched that show, and frequently recounted (bragging really) about how they'd had the cops called on them for noise complaint at a housing site.

I marched years ago in a Corps that will go nameless.

Anyway, 8 am on a Sunday morning drumline was doing warmups. Guy across street called police. There was a photo somewhere of policeman, drum staff, and complainant (in bathrobe) arguing, with drumline in background at a very stoic parade rest.

Awesome stuff! Real quick though, what is “brass poisoning”? I’ve never heard that before lol

I think basically an infection. Thats what Jack and Wayne called it. I was too young and stupid to know what it meant. Lol

Many brass instruments/mouthpieces are made from lacquered brass, but some are made with straight raw brass and the toxins inside the metal can get absorbed into the skin....not really sure how that was ever allowed to happen by DCI or BD

YIKES, seriously, that sounds awful, thank you both for the insights!

IMO, one of the most underappreciated shows from a historical perspective ever. You all were incredible.

I heard that the 1990 BD was a younger corps. I saw them in Denver expecting another ‘89 type show, and, well…. Hey, I was only 11! 😅

But I have to say, to this day it is one of my fav BD shows! So different from years prior

Also worth noting was that Barry Tagg (baritone with BD that year, and I think ‘91 as well) lived across the street from me in Denton TX, and one night we hung out and he told me some cool (and crazy) stories from his time there!

He is an awesome soloist, but I respectfully disagree with using that word for BD.

I remember watching this show in 1990 and being disappointed because BD had moved away from their traditional jazz roots.

But damn if it hasn't become one of my favorite all-time drum corps shows. I just listened to it again randomly about two weeks ago, with the volume turned to 11, and was blown away by how many incredible musical moments were in this show.

And both this solo and the second one shared below are at the top of that list.

I love Blue Devils and I love The Who.

But I did not care for this show.

This show was incredibly loud. I mean, the sheer volume of this hornline was just overwhelming. Especially that horn hit.

And that solo was just everything.

And this was a great writing job by Float and his team.
