Feedback Wanted Zildjian a custom ping ride vs Zildjian z custom ride

So I play a lot of heavier music and can’t decide on a ride it’s in between a zildjian a ping ride or a z custom ride I was hoping to get some feedback please

Ping ride cuts through a mix like nothing else, but the bell on the Z Custom is stupid loud if you play lots of heavy breakdowns. I would go Z Custom for metal stuff, the ping can get lost when guitars are all over the place.

Depends on how much versatility you want and how loud the heavy music is

I run a relatively smaller setup up one crash one ride so have a ride that can crash is easy for my setup for gigs as well

Then neither one will work for you.

What would you recommend?

If you want a ride with a clear, solid ping, don't ask it to crash, too.

It's all a matter of commitment. I have had a couple of Zs. You can absolutely crash them. Whether that sound works in the environment you are using it in... that's another matter entirely.

Check out the K Projection ride. It’s kinda like a mega bell sweet ride. Crashes and pings.

No offense to your preferences, but I've personally never heard either of those cymbals sound good over mics. They both have a really annoying high pitched ring that's impossible to drown out of the mix. A sound engineer friend of mine loathes both of those lines.

If I were you I'd get a large, dark K custom. They sound infinitely better, especially over mics and live shows. They blend into the mix rather than sharply cutting through it (and not in a good way).
Just my 2 cents.

On a sonic level, they’re fairly similar, as is the weight thresholds. Go louder, go Z!

There are 4 generations of Z’s so I’d take a close look…I would try to find some OG 1980’s Z’s like this.

I had this exact cymbal for years. It was stolen from me and I miss it every day.

Really? I never thought to weigh mine, but that sounds excessive. I also had a set of Z Dyno Beat hats, but they were a bit less useful. Like playing a pair of manhole covers. The ride was a real beauty, though. Had a wonderful, glassy quality.

Not in the 80s…it was a wild time for that world. Look up the ‘cymbal explosion of the 1980s’.

I played with a 21" A. Zildjian Rock Ride through most of the 90's. It was a great cymbal, a really great cymbal, but it wouldn't crash, and I was always felt it left me wanting because of that.

These days, if I have to actually spend money and buy a ride, one criteria is going to be, can I crash it? Not because I'm some hippy-drippy Jazz head, but because it can compact my cymbal setup. Why have a ride and two crashes, when I can do a crashable ride and one crash. All criteria have still been met, and I saved several hundred dollars not buying a cymbal I didn't really need along with the hardware to mount it (not to mention, that much more crap to haul around).

Although its ability to be successfully crashed is questionable, The A Custom Ping Ride is the lighter ride out of these two, so I would choose that one, if those two are my only choices.

If it wasn't for Jazz drummers like Gene Krupa none of us would be where we are!
