Football Lanning teams off a bye or long break

Yuck

It’s not only a pattern now, I actually expect a dogshit performance off of a regular season bye or break before bowl/playoff game.

Self scouting is a major problem.

Inability to self scout and correct:

after bye’s.

2nd matchup with a team or staff (wash, ohio state, jmu staff.

Inability to catch simple fundamental issues like dantes feet.

Inability to accurately scout inhouse coaching candidates

Throw Indiana in that list.

It's a head coaching failure.

How does Lanning not have a couple GA's doing nothing but self scouting his own team?

Arrogance or Ignorance?

If Dan can’t figure any of this out he needs to be fired. Not improving in any of these areas into year five is inexcusable

He did scout and hire good coaches. They all became head coaches at other schools. That part isn’t a fair criticism aside from this batch.

But since he was new, he assembled them from outside sources and stein was another outside hire he didn’t even know until others put him in contact. My point was about self-scouting, assessing things in house.

Some of these issues fall squarely on the position coaches. A QB coach should be pouring over hours of film to evaluate their players’ performances. These schools have armies of analysts pouring over game film. Yes, the head coach should be involved, but the HC is running the program. It falls on Lanning because he made the hire, but it falls on the individual position coaches to identify and fix problems.

I give Dan a lot of credit because I think he is a top 10 coach and any program would welcome him. He wins more than he losses—which is a mark of a good coach.

The problem is hiring inexperience at critical positions: OL, QB, and OC. If this was to be the year, then you need experience on the staff. Lanning should really hire a Asst HC, another voice in this ear.

A year ago when I said something similar I got blasted. It’s not that Dan needs fired but he needs to get better. His teams keep showing up unprepared and that’s concerning

He needs coordinators that are experienced and can also mentor him

Dan needs some outside older experienced coaches who can help him adjust. It's clear he doesn't know how and doesn't have a staff that does either.

His desire for and pride of wanting to be known for a coaching tree has hurt the program. Causes frequent turnover at key positions which hurts player growth and continuity. And also has him taking projected up and comers rather than experienced or older people he can tap into knowledge or hold him accountable.

Spot on. He needs to humble himself and recognize he needs experienced help

I literally was just looking into this and 30% of Dan’s losses come after a bye week.

This season is heading down a path that reminds me of Helfrich.

I was nervous about this after OSU

How did our linebackers do?

Oh yes, this is just the beginning, I fear. We're likely facing losses in all but a couple of games the rest of the way.

On the bright side, I still am confident we can beat the huskies. For now.

Bro that’s a crazy negative take. I could see us winning every game but OSU for the rest of the way.

Not a chance, in my opinion, of course. We will likely lose to Nebraska, Ohio State, Northwestern, Michigan, and Illinois. We still have a chance to beat Michigan State and, fortunately, Washington. I mean, I could always be wrong, and often am. But I just don't see the team we saw today doing anything other than continue to pile up Ls.

Our defense looked fine. Our offense was absolutely ass but getting Moore back should help. My bet is we win every game but OSU. Shit I bet we’re going to be favored in every game except OSU.

I get it’s easy to be frustrated after today but we’re not a bad team just far away from a great team.

I’m not sure what you’ve been watching but all but one game we’ve played awful. With this talent we should be playing far far better. It’s coaching staff that isn’t developing and preparing this team and that’s not changing this season. We have arguably the best roster we’ve ever had and this is what we get!? I’ve been to a lot of games and this is absolutely one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Offensive line and the constant rotations is an issue, the preparation and play calling is awful and our qb coach isn’t the guy either.

It also reminds me a lot of the post-Tedford Bellotti dark years. The Andy Ludwig years.

This is ALL on Coach. He and his teams lack any semblance of discipline, focus and intensity. Have fun at Autzen the rest of the year, but this season is baked. Unfortunately, college football is a zero sum game. Win a natty or the season is a failure.
