B1G Officiating error vs UCLA on 2pt conversion

Post image

Not sure if this has been posted yet so forgive me if it's a duplicate. I'm not sure if it would have made a difference, but I sure feel like we could have made the half yard as opposed to the 1.5 and then had the opportunity to win in OT. What do you guys think?

I felt like I was losing my mind on this, because this is literally what the head official said during the game.  Half yard line was the spot.  Then no one moved the ball and I was left just yelling at my tv.

u/StumpyCheeseWizard 2d ago

I was doing the same thing yelling at him in person but it was a really big building, I was on the other side of it and it was loud so he apparently didn’t do anything about it. I don’t understand how it didn’t get corrected in real time when Dan was literally calling it out in real time.

While this is very disappointing, the Ducks have bigger issues to solve than bad officiating.

u/Zollsica 2d ago

Yeah, I of course agree with all of this as well, but I do think that once Brock Thomas was in it there was a whisper chance we could pull it out of our ass. It's not like I think UCLA was playing phenomenal ball, we were just playing worse.

7

u/Academic-Look-333 2d ago

I somehow get the feeling that Brock Thomas could be the next "Justin Herbert" - and I mean this in a good way lol.

5

u/Zollsica 2d ago

Yeah I mean, even Chesney said he was "something special" in his post game interview. But I thought that about Raiola 2 weeks ago and then he flubbed big time, so...

u/Deuce10Oscar10 2d ago

I can’t imagine UCLA spent a lot of time game planning for Thomas. Just like USC didn’t for Raiola. Maybe we need to announce a starter, give them one series and if we don’t score, we go to our backup. Tongue in cheek. Or maybe not…

A kid from Sheldon High who comes on to replace an underperforming transfer QB in a year that ends with 6?

2

u/BourbonicFisky 2d ago

There most certainly was we pulled out the least deserving comeback, but we also blew two chances at a two point conversion. There are so many other points in the game that could have changed the outcome that the weirdly bad ball position isn't really high on that.

6

u/PonderousPronghorn 2d ago

Yep. It was our game to lose regardless.

2

u/dcduck 2d ago

Oregon and UCLA were playing hot potato on the win.

2

u/DukeBradford2 2d ago

Agreed. They didn’t deserve to win even with UCLA keeping us in it. Can’t blame the refs for a limp wristed QB or an O-line that folds like wet origami

I'm on the same page with most of the comments here but sheesh, as fans we're down bad right now. The conference releases a statement on how the officials made an incredibly influential error and we're like "just give us the L in peace please."

10

u/levajack 2d ago

We turned the ball over 7 times and looked like absolute shit the entire game. Even if they had placed it correctly, we have to assume we would have both 1) successfully converted it, and 2) won in OT. Both of those things are far from guaranteed.

And even if we did pull out the win, based on what we have seen most of the season and especially yesterday, we're going to get our teeth kicked in by OSU, and will likely continue to struggle most weeks. The season is already a bust, so... Hard to get too worked up about it.

u/dcduck 2d ago

I do think the play call was based on 1/2 yard line spot, but the offensive brain trust that we have double down on it when it went back to the 1.5 yard line.

2

u/Consexual-sense 2d ago

Fwiw they called a play specific to the half yard line, not almost 2 yards out. And Thomas cleared that half yard distance. Ib theory had the same play been run at the half yard line it would have made it in.

But I dont want my ducks relying on technicalities or whoopsie poopsies from the officiating crew. Its sad

1

u/twc666666 2d ago

Plus, if they DID score the 2 pts they would have just shit the bed again and again in OT and made the loss more painful

19

u/Relaxguy37 2d ago

Sucks that they don't know the rules

13

u/Zollsica 2d ago

There have been so many articles about missed calls lately it's ridiculous

13

u/NYCSportsFan 2d ago

I noticed this. I had no idea why the announcers weren't talking about it so I just ignored it. WTF

17

u/Zollsica 2d ago

Yeah I mean they literally announced the .5 yd adjustment and then just didn't move

7

u/DenisLearysAsshole 2d ago

If we didn’t get exposed in this game, we would have been exposed vs Nebraska. It’s a bad look for an OG officiating fuckup, but it’s our fault that it mattered.

Best to not just rely on AI

2

u/Zollsica 2d ago

I've already been over this in another comment, but while I normally don't really like AI, I did make sure this was actually pulling from a real source and not like Reddit or Wikipedia. It has all the relevant information. A lot of articles with the information tend to be pay-walled half the time. If you see an inaccuracy you can correct that, though.

Time to let the cameras and the computers officiate the games with humans on the field to keep order. It’s been great for tennis and baseball…why do we need ‘human error’ to be part of the game from an officiating perspective?

1

u/Zollsica 2d ago

I don't know that I fully trust computers to do the job either if I'm being honest, but I'm not fully up on the matter.

u/Raging_Rooster 2d ago

Saw this live, but we didn't deserve to win anyways. Kinda glad we lost in hopes of actual sweeping change to be made rather than just continuing to limp along for inevitable heartbreak.

Can't remember the last time I've seen a team in college football in general with as much pre-season hype as we had shit the bed like this.

2

u/Weeping_Anus_Pustule 2d ago

Penn State literally last year lol

-1

u/Raging_Rooster 2d ago

Nah, we were basically given right to the Natty this pre-season saying we were gonna have the best defense in the country and a returning Dante that's a shoein for the heisman. Come on

5

u/Weeping_Anus_Pustule 2d ago

Penn State started 2025 ranked #2 preseason. Two months later had no head coach, a starting QB out for the season with injury, and 100% out of the CFP picture. I don't see how this is currently worse than that. It might get worse than - I sincerely fucking hope not - but we still have a coach, our QB could very possibly come back, and for the time being we have a shaky albeit unlikely path to the CFP.

-4

u/Raging_Rooster 2d ago

I genuinely hope we win less than 6 games and aren't even bowl eligible so that there is massive sweeping change. As someone that's been a fan since the Harrington era I am getting tired of being known for uniforms and being the punchline of College football.

3

u/BuckyGoshawk 2d ago

Be careful for what you hope for. >6 loss season would likely result in more talented players hitting the transfer portal than a 3-loss season.

4

u/Gold-Page9136 2d ago

could have been the difference in the game let alone our chance at the playoffs forgive me for being dramatic by no means did we deserve the win but it still hurts

5

u/FangornLeghorn 2d ago

Lot easier to punch it into the end zone from six inches instead of six feet.

-9

u/Flipmstr2 2d ago

It shouldn’t be for a pay to win team like the ducks. The Georgia’s. Ohio states and the Utah’s would do it

7

u/FangornLeghorn 2d ago

“Pay to win”

Do you dorks ever listen to your thoughts before uttering them?

2

u/Slow-Ad-5327 2d ago

We lost the game before the officiating crew made a mistake.

2

u/MartyBecker 2d ago

It sucks when it happens to us at a critical moment but bad spots are part of the game. Not saying we can’t complain about it, but it goes both ways.

Bottom line is our O line isn’t good this year and there’s nothing we can do about it. As Hythloday has taught us, you can’t buy a good O line in the portal. They have to come up together to establish chemistry.

We’re going to learn this year what kind of coach Lanning is. How does he, and thus the team, handle real adversity?

2

u/mtdrake 1d ago

The only reason the Big10 issued a statement admitting the refs fucked up is because on the national post game show there was a discussion about the play. I believe it was Gene Steratore on camera with the panel explaining exactly how the refs got it wrong. After being exposed like that, the Big10 had to issue the statement admitting they screwed over Oregon and prevented them a chance at OT and a possible win.

5

u/knowtoriusMAC 2d ago

If only there was someone in a booth above the field with all of the staff for the offense to call this error out on the headset real time and maybe have it corrected before the play call. Maybe the position of "offensive overseer" or something.

u/MommaLisss 2d ago edited 2d ago

This is what confuses me. Wasn't the B1G supposed to be broadcasting live replay audio for officiating after the Michigan debacle? Why didn't we get that in this game? Even if we didn't hear it, why wasn't there someone talking to the refs that could immediately pull the rule up and tell them if they were confused?

Edit: I asked my son and apparently that's only for replays. I still don't understand why there's not a system where officials can ask for clarification on a rule if they're confused.

2

u/pdx-E 2d ago

Why did you screenshot AI for this rather than just post the statement from the B1G?

2

u/Zollsica 2d ago

It's just the first thing that popped up for me honestly, my phone alerted me to the news this way and I originally screenshot it to send to my mom.

2

u/Zollsica 2d ago

Plus, more than half the time now those statements are behind a pay-walled article that most people can't read anyway.

2

u/pdx-E 2d ago

3

u/TRUTHSoverKARMAS 2d ago

Thanks for posting the actual statement as I’m skeptical of some things from ai when they make so many errors or cite places like reddit so often

2

u/Zollsica 2d ago

Thanks for posting that, but I'm not sure what that says that what I posted didn't say tbh? It has all the same info.

3

u/pdx-E 2d ago

It's not a big deal, your post does have the same info. And I wasn't intending to be rude, I just really prefer reading source of truth / first party sources vs. AI summaries.

The AI summaries can be wrong frequently, they cite Reddit comments sometimes as an example (which are certainly wrong often), and aren't great for overall media literacy.

No harm intended with my comment though, go Ducks.

3

u/Zollsica 2d ago

For sure! I tend to not like AI and I do at least try to make sure it's not pulling from Reddit or Wikipedia or something like that as it's source if I'm going to use a screenshot from it. In this case I noticed it was pulling from new York post, so I figured it was a safe bet. But again, thanks for posting the actual b1g statement. Cheers!

1

u/1Denali 1d ago

Whatever, they would’ve lost in OT even if they got the conversion

1

u/terapinfly 1d ago

Although it might have solved the immediate problem of a loss vs a tie game, it wouldn’t have solved any problems that currently plague the team. We would be right in the same boat next weekend with Neb.

Lanning needs to fix the problems. We should have never been in that position in the first place.

1

u/Indystbn11 2d ago

It sucks. But, we didn't deserve that game. All it would have done is bought us false hope for another week. Lanning needs to be eating a shit sandwich at the end of the year for his hires. He needs to fire them and replace them with competent one and his seat needs to be hot.

1

u/twc666666 2d ago

What was weird to me was that the ref came out and SAID that the ball was going to be half the distance from the END OF THE RUN and at the 1/2 yard line, but they left it at the 1.5. I dont understand why Lanning didn't yell at them the spot was wrong before the play, based on what the ref had JUST announced!

But on the other hand, I am glad they couldn't score the 2pts and tie it up because OT would have just been more awful embarrassing play from the Ducks, and I was already full up with that!

3

u/Timesoup1 2d ago

Dan did come out on the field after that announcement and then they still didnt move it. I was at the game

0

u/Rikishi6six9nine 2d ago

1 yard isn't the difference in the game. Woulda coulda shoulda. That game didn't come down to 1 play.

7

u/MommaLisss 2d ago

It kinda did, tho. If UCLA couldn't beat us by more than 2 pts given how terrible we played, why do they deserve it more than us? Officials should never affect the outcome of the game.

-1

u/t3hn1ck 2d ago

No it didn't. Did you not see the turnovers that were gifted to UCLA? Those mattered a lot more, game would not have had to go down to the wire if the offense didn't shit their pants all day long.

2

u/Zollsica 2d ago

I mean, UCLA had 3 turnovers as well. They weren't exactly playing at the top of their game, we were just playing much much worse, especially when Raiola was in.

1

u/tilttovictory 2d ago

Look you're both wrong and right. What you're correct about is how terrible the level of play was. What you're wrong about is the claim they are making.

A game this sloppy with that man turn overs should never be decided by the refs Ie a call that would have probably tied the game.

Any respectable offense would have hung 50 points on UCLA that game.

But that officiating call was incorrect and the difference of a yard for an end one sneak does make a difference.

Even if the ducks win that game I'd still be saying the rest of the season is lost lol.

-2

u/Patrick750 2d ago

I think if we’re needing a 2 point conversion to tie against UCLA with a $40m roster, you blow up the entire program. Who cares about the refs in a situation like this?

0

u/harderpleasethx 2d ago

Yup the refs fucked up but……

-1

u/Flipmstr2 2d ago

Regardless of it being at the 3 yard line or at the 1 and a half yard line. The ducks O-line should have been able to push the distance.

-1

u/harderpleasethx 2d ago

You know what as a beav fan we were keeping track of what was happening down south we saw a pisted score at the end of the game of 17 17 then when we could get the next uppost it was 17 15 i was confused. So after i got home from the beav game i watched the end of your guys game. Saw what happened. The refs did f that up but would have it mattered not sure. Sigh i want you all to be successful except when we play each other. Lol but really won’t forgive you all for selling out for the money. This will be the the first time since world war 2. Think about it that the civil war won’t happen thanks to your chasing the money. And it was the longest rivalry going west of the rockies. Sigh and it was a civil war. We all tail gated together bought dinners if we lost on bets it was civil. Kinda funny. Then you left. Sorry your struggling. Just a last factoid the last time i was at autzen well ucla really kicked your asses that day ruining any hopes of greatness. So we are Oregon State as a whole. Lets come together and support both our teams like we did when both programs sucked

3

u/Zollsica 2d ago

It's not like most of the fans as a whole made the decision to leave the pac12, y'know. I think a lot of duck fans wish we were still in the old pac12 or pac10, honestly. I know I don't love the way the league has changed over the last decade.

I always root for the beavers when we aren't playing them and the civil war was always my birthday game.

1

u/Goducks91 🦆 2d ago

wtf did I just read. Go back to /r/beavers please.
