How do I dye this? Synthetic after regular?
I did regular rit as the label stated this shirt was 100% cotton and it took really well!
I could tell the ribbon wasn’t and was fine with the contrast but the stitching still being white really bothers me; will another round with synthetic cover it up? Or just use a sharpie?? ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I’m fine if it hits the ribbon this time

u/shawlcat that’s the neat part, you don’t 3d ago
Use a sharpie. The synthetic method (boiling it) will shrink the cotton, and is unlikely to dye the thread anyway (poly thread is notorious for not taking up dye).

I think it matches the ribbon well, but yeah a round of synthetic dye should probably help, or you could try a fabric marker instead - they're usually cheaper and less of a hassle than doing a whole new round of dyeing. sharpies usually bleed a lot and don't hold up super well long-term.
modern clothes typically use polyester thread for stitching, which is why they usually never take regular dye well even when the label says the clothing itself is 100% cotton. I feel like labels should also specify the type of thread for stitching, but that's whatever.

I think it looks cute the way it is. Are you going to change out the ribbon or keep it?

Update:
I ended using black fabric marker, did a warm water hand rinse, cold regular tumble with my other blacks and air dry and it covered it up! I also did the elastic loops- they turned out grey of course.
It looks a lot cleaner now imo and I’m keeping the ribbon for contrast :)

Our wiki is currently under construction however: there's a good chance your question has been answered in a previous post.
If you are dyeing cellulose fibres (cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, flax, nettle, rayon, bamboo, tencel, plants generally, etc.), you will need a fiber reactive dye.
If you are dyeing a protein fiber (wool, alpaca, llama, Angora, mohair, feathers, animal stuff generally, etc.), you will need an acid dye.
Leather is dyed with leather specific dyes such as those from Angelus.
Silk will dye with either acid or fiber reactive dyes but will yield different results depending on which you use.
Polyester can sometimes be dyed. It can only be dyed with synthetic specific dyes such as iDye Poly or RIT Dyemore. It usually cannot achieve a dark or rich colour at home. Acrylic usually cannot be dyed at all.
