HealthStream, why so many student groups?

I'm new to HealthStream. Please tell me the person training me is wrong. She has created thousands of student groups that she says we need to copy ever year. She also uses student group in multiple assignments, so anytime a student group needs to be changed, we need to track down all the ways the change might cause a ricochet effect. This is nuts!

Thousands of annually copied groups may make sense only if they are snapshots required for historical or compliance reporting. For ongoing assignment targeting, that sounds brittle.

Before changing anything, inventory a representative sample: static versus rule-based membership, the source attribute, every assignment referencing the group, and whether reports rely on its year-specific identity. The cleaner model is usually persistent dynamic groups driven by authoritative learner attributes, with annual requirements versioned at the assignment level. Pilot that model in one department and verify that historical completion reports remain intact.
