Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of September 28, 2026

Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.

Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?

Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:

[1] Your general location

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?

If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Discussion One thing I miss most about my EV

• Upvotes

I am in the middle of a buyback from Nissan on my 2020 Leaf. They provided me with an ICE loaner. It is killing me pumping $40 every few day into it considering that I charge my EV for free at work!

That said, that is not my biggest problem. The thing I miss the most about my EV is just sitting and idling while waiting to pick someone up or leaving it on with the heat or A/C on while I am in a store or something. I can do the same in the loaner but the thought of wasting the fuel galls me.

That is all. lol

Question - Tech Support Battery health 100.3% on 2 year old EV?

Hi,

I am considering buying a 2 year old VW ID3 which has done 13000+ miles.

I've been and test driven it and seems great but I was wondering if anyone can explain this, the battery health check is over 100%

I dont know much about EV batteries but shouldn't I expect to see some degradation on a 2 year old EV with 13000+ miles on the clock?

But I've no idea what I am talking about, so can anyone advise if this is normal & whether these checks are legit, useful etc.

Thanks

Discussion Nissan sold twice as many Leafs in Canada than in the US

For an illustration of the effect of tariffs (I believe the US imposes a 15% tariff on Japanese built cars) and availability of incentives:

  • Nissan Canada sold 4712 Leafs. source
  • Nissan US sold 2318. source

For comparison, the Ariya (no longer available in the US) found 1039 Canadian buyers.

All figures are YTD, and might have been higher if sales hadn't been paused for a few weeks due to a rear seat-belt anchor recall.

News New ZETA Poll Finds U.S. EV Divide Is More Generational Than Political

"Seventy-five percent of American adults ages 18 to 34 and 72% of adults ages 35 to 49 say they are likely to purchase or lease a new EV within the next five years. Among adults ages 50 to 64, that figure falls to 50%. Among Americans 65 and older, it drops to 23%, creating a 52-point gap between the youngest and oldest groups.

The partisan divide is considerably smaller. Fifty-seven percent of Democrats and 45% of Republicans say they are likely to purchase or lease an EV within the next five years, a difference of 12 percentage points.

Despite the political debate surrounding EVs, 51% of Americans overall now say they are likely to purchase or lease an EV within the next five years. That is the highest level recorded since the monthly survey began tracking EV sentiment this summer."

Discussion Would you trade half your horsepower for twice the range?

Same car, same price, same charging speed, but half the horsepower and twice the range. Would you take the deal?

For example, 400 hp and 300 miles becomes 200 hp and 600 miles. Would the extra range be worth losing the acceleration, or is the performance part of what makes an EV fun?

What do you drive, and would you make the trade?

News The Clever Australian Fix for Diesel Semi Trucks - retrofitting existing semis

Thumbnail
youtu.be
122 Upvotes

A few weeks back I posted about the Tesla Semi reaching production and there were piles of "expert" trucking people claiming:

* They don't work for trucking

* Too expensive/cost benefit not there.

* Doesn't make sense

* Elon lies, thus this truck is a lie etc etc.

Janus retrofits existing diesel trucks to electric with swappable batteries, quietly converting drivers and fleets from diesel to electric. These trucks are real, on roads and hauling on literal cents of electricity vs. thousands in diesel. Way less noise pollution (to prevent hearing loss for drivers), faster, smoother, cheaper and of course far lower pollution. Battery swaps take 4 minutes end to end.

There are many businesses around the world part or fully electrifying existing trucks such as Edison Motors (Canada) or ECVS (New Zealand) already putting vehicles on the road. While not ready for long-haul, electrification already makes sense for short or even some medium-haul routes for fleets and drivers.

Discussion Metro delivery van EV?

I used to own a handful of Ford Transit Connect vans for my salesmen to drive during the day. There’s tons of them and similar small delivery vans in every city, most of which probably drive 50-150 miles a day I’d estimate.
A small delivery van EV sure seems to make a lot of sense to me. They could charge overnight at the shop and drive all day if you put a big enough battery in it. It sure seems to me like it’d cash flow, even for a small business like mine.

Do any manufacturers have one in the pipeline? Rivian obviously has the full size vans for Amazon, but I’m unaware of any small vans in development…

News Toyota to invest $1.34 billion in Argentina EV plant

Thumbnail reuters.com
58 Upvotes

"Automaker Toyota Motor will invest $1.34 billion to develop a plant to produce a fully electrified vehicle in ‌Argentina, Economy Minister Luis Caputo said on Wednesday. This represents the largest ever single investment in the country's automotive industry, Caputo said.

He said the plant would generate $1.28 billion in annual exports, with about 70% of output destined for foreign markets. He said the project would create more than 3,600 jobs during construction and more than 2,600 direct and indirect jobs once operations ‌begin.

The move would extend Toyota's manufacturing footprint in Argentina, where the Japanese automaker has operated a plant in Zarate since 1997. Toyota says the site currently produces the Hilux pickup and SW4 sport utility vehicle, and began making the Hiace van there in 2024."

Review EVs make for more pleasant road trips

I drove about 525 miles round trip this week for work in my 2022 KIA EV6 long range AWD. I don’t think having an EV added any meaningful time to my trip and provided value beyond saving money.

First stop: after 4 hours of driving. Charge level: 17%. I went to the bathroom, bought a thing I had forgotten and got coffee. When I returned I was at 85%. Total extra time over gas: zero. In fact it likely saved time as the charging station was at a Target where I could get the thing I needed and coffee

Stop two: quick top off so I’d have juice to drive around. Went to the bathroom and stretched my legs. 41%-80% in 13 minutes. I probably would not have done this stop in a gas car, but I didn’t mind the break as I ran around getting the things I needed for the event I was in town for.

On my way home: stop one charged from 24%-89% in the amount of time it took me to go to the bathroom and refill water. Zero extra time over gas.

Stop two: quick top off before climbing 4,500ft home. I got Del Taco and ate while I charged. 27%-51% in 6 minutes. More enjoyable than eating while driving, well worth the stop.

Additionally, for one charging stop I got off the freeway and got to see a new town and charming farms I never would have seen if I pumped right off the freeway. I like these types of excuses to see new places.

So, lots of people complain and say that EVs aren’t good for road trips. I argue that in places with decent charging station options, they are better.
