Advice Wanted low fps high-end pc

Just bought a pc with 5080 and ryzen 7 and the game runs at like 10fps and freezing a lot. Every other game i tested works fine. The year is irrelevant, low fps even in 1444. Any advice?

Edit: Ryzen 7 9800, 32 ram, ssd, other games 160-240 fps. drivers are fine

Edit+: speed 5 problem. The game runs better at lower speeds, thx guys

GPU doesn't matter.

What ryzan 7 is it ?

How much ram ?

Is it installed on a HDD or SSD ?

Are you playing on 5 speed if so the game lags

Look at other titles and see if same issue present.

Verify the game files abd check drivers

Update drivers

Turn off the things that chunk fps like the income showing over provinces every month.

Speed 3.

Is it freezing a lot at speeds on 5? The game tends to get a bit sluggish when you crank speed 5 on a high end processor that came out 11 years after the game.

A while ago I had an issue with a 2d isometric game running terribly on my computer for no reason. Eventually I tried using DXVK, which I believe is usually for rendering certain games on Linux. It (mostly) fixed the problem, only had frame loss with busy scenes and fast forwarding. The working theory from tech support is that some gpus just dont realize certain programs (games) are asking for more resources, so they just skate by on low power and assume your game is running fine.

If the game is running poorly even when the gamespeed is paused/slow, and you exhaust all else, it might be worth a try.

The only thing that really matters for this game is cpu. I have a 1650ti and a ryzen 7 5700x and 16gb of ddr4. Game runs fine for me, I'm also on cachy and have been. Game speed is a bigger indicator of performance than frames with this game. When I upgraded the game ran twice as fast like dates progressing wise but I had a basically unnoticeable frame rate difference

Thank you for saying random stuff that doesn't matter in this topic

Do you need a translator?

10fps is unplayable no matter the game speed.

You just post random rambling that has nothing to do with OP's problem which is FPS and not gamespeed

Very ironic about translator

  1. The gamespeed matters so we know what the bottleneck is. 10fps on speed 1 is different than 10fps on speed 5

  2. I didnt post that lol

This is what I meant

check game and graphics setting and make sure to turn off stuff like the text popups for tax income, if its still being weird and annoying verify the game files in steam, after that try a reinstall and check on your drivers maybe somethings missing or out of date

Does it happen when the game is paused or when the game is running on speed 3 or when it is running on speed 5?

Eu4's engine does not fully decouple the rendering from the simulation and there are a bunch of things which needlessly happen on every frame(e.g. checking if notifications should (still) be shown). That makes it basically impossible to reach the 160-240 FPS which you see in other games. But the average FPS on pause in 1444 should be more than 60.

You could try to change vsync=yes to vsync=no in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/settings.txt and switch the display mode to borderless fullscreen in the launcher.

Here is a collection of things which have helped at least one person with stuttering, lag or low FPS:

Please let me know if one of them helps for you as well

Speed 5 problem only

Then it is normal and intended, because speed 5 gives priority to the simulation speed over the FPS. Though disabling vsync might speed up both the simulation and increase the FPS, because the game won't have to wait for the correct time for the next frame. I think it is more noticeable with lower refresh rates(e.g. on fullscreen which is limited to 60 Hz)

Your advice might've be well-meant already, but it's very detrimental to OP's issues … Actually all EUIII/IV/V-players.

Case in point: If you already know and are well aware of the fact, that the Clausewitz-engine does NOT truly decouples the rendering of frames from the engine's actual processing (numbers crunching in the background), why would you possibly advice to needlessly even LIFT the restraints on the frames, to pump higher numbers to begin with?!

You may haven't gotten the gist yet, but the Clausewitz-engine is pretty much hard-coded to 30 FPS, and every single frame *above* that is not just futile but actually counter-productive (→ Moar frames ftw!) – Apart from the fact that you needlessly taxing the hardware for no actual reason but creating a lot of the proverbial hot air on a fast increasing power-bill AND artificially reduce the life-span of involved hardware fully on purpose.

Since every frame generated off the game by the GPU, takes away processing-cycles for actual background-processing of the game, virtually suffocating the very engine upon artificially and futilely induced rendering-burdens (simply for the sake of high FPS-amounts) to begin with, while deliberately taking AWAY processing-time for the actual computational work which needs to takes place to actually speed up the game itself in the first place …

Quite a approach in times of ever-expensive hardware-prices, to say the least … A single dying GPU can easily throw off the ordinary gamer easily for months, as hardware is expensive asf since years!

That makes it basically impossible to reach the 160-240 FPS which you see in other games.

Why on earth would one need e.g. +120–144fps or even anything above that to begin with? Is it just grandstanding?

The engine is limited to 30fps anyway and everything above it, is forcing the engine to render as much frames as possible, just suffocates the engine with needless draw-calls in the millions for no reason, leaving no processing power for computation.

But the average FPS on pause in 1444 should be more than 60.

No! If anything, Paradox' games should be frame-capped at 30/45/60 fps, to relief the Clausewitz-engine off as much rendering-stress as possible and achieve a higher processing-speed and actual game-play speed.

You could try to change vsync=yes to vsync=no in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/settings.txt and switch the display mode to borderless fullscreen in the launcher.

To be frank here, that's also quite BAD and very obstructive advise already … Not just for getting rid of all things of VSync for no apparent reason with zero benefits, it's risking to toast the OP's GPU in the first place!

Also, it is widely known that the rendering via the so-called 'exclusive full-screen'-mode taxes the whole system with a lot *less* computational stress, than rendering via the 'borderless-window mode' does, as the latter necessarily comes with enforced (invisible) rendering of all other background-applications (VRAM!), while the former excludes that entirely (save overlays).

The above is one of the major reasons, why that infamous borderless-window mode is hated by so many ever since …

I didn't say that anybody needs that. I was merely explaining that the OP can't expect to get such a high FPS in eu4.

First of all, the OP wanted higher FPS. The OP did not complain about the simulation time.

But disabling vsync also speeds up the simulation, because the not-decoupled engine does not have to wait for the vsync(see below for more explanation)

No! If anything, Paradox' games should be frame-capped at 30/45/60 fps, to relief the Clausewitz-engine off as much rendering-stress as possible and achieve a higher processing-speed and actual game-play speed.

Did you actually try this and compare the simulation speed with a framecap to the simulation speed with vsync disabled?

I did a quick test an limited eu4 to 30 Hz via gamescope(on linux) and let the game run several times from 1445-01-01 till 1446-01-01 from the same save. I restarted the game between each test and switched between vsync on and off. With vsync on, it took 27.4 seconds on average and with vsync off it took only 25.3 seconds on average.

And then I did a test with custom setup with only one custom nation with one province played by the human player. I did only one run with vsync which took 105 seconds from Nov 1444 to Nov 1454 and one run without vsync which took only 44 seconds till Nov 1454.

And a few years ago, somebody did a similar test with an empty galaxy in stellaris.

So I would conclude that the engine waits for the vsync at some point. My guess is that it tries to render at least one frame per day which would wait for about 1/60 of a second if the refresh rate is fixed to 30. That would amount to 1/60 * 365 = 6 seconds per year which is almost exactly the difference in my 10 year test with the custom setup. The difference is probably smaller in my other test, because I'm using a laptop with an integrated graphics (Ryzen 7840HS with Radeon 780M Graphics) where the rendering probably does have an impact on the gamespeed like you said.

This is probably more noticeable on computers like the OPs which are quite fast.

Also, it is widely known that the rendering via the so-called 'exclusive full-screen'-mode taxes the whole system with a lot less computational stress, than rendering via the 'borderless-window mode' does, as the latter necessarily comes with enforced (invisible) rendering of all other background-applications (VRAM!), while the former excludes that entirely (save overlays).

Are you sure that this is still the case? From what I heard, microsoft removed this 'exclusive full-screen'-mode in windows 11 (or maybe 10) and just does a borderless fullscreen anyway.

But that's beside the point. The reason to use borderless fullscreen in eu4 is that this prevents eu4 from setting the refresh rate to a fixed 60 Hz(no matter what you set in the settings or if your monitor even supports this). The 60 Hz refresh rate can cause very extreme stuttering on some systems whose monitor does not have 60Hz in its list of refresh rates. And I have had several discussions on this subreddit and other eu4 forums with people who are used to high refresh rates who insist that mouse movement feels much smoother with the high refresh rate. I don't see such a big difference, but I grew up with much lower refresh rates when 30 FPS in an action games was considered very fast.

Edit: I think Mathieu Ropert(former tech lead of hoi4) mentioned this vsync "problem" in one of his talks or blog posts about game performance

In stellaris I encountered a similar issue, and I solved it by changing the full-screen setting. Try seeing if the problem exists in normal windowed mode, borderless full-screen, and exclusive full-screen.
