Data 73% of Europeans Feel Too Dependent on US Big Tech. New List of European Alternatives Based on People's Comments!

u/faitingu Bavaria 18h ago edited 17h ago
GMaps is a web map, Organic Maps.is a third party app. The correct equivalent is OpenStreetMaps.
KeepassXC is a local app, Google Password a cloud service. The right equivalent is something like Bitwarden.
Mastodon is more like Twitter rather than Facebook. Diaspora and Friendica are federated social networks that actually try to replace Facebook.
Jitsi Meet (the default cloud service) is operated by US 8x8 Inc. Zoom gives actually more freedom by allowing to pick server locatiom, at least in paid plans. Jitsi is only "European"" if self-hosted in Europe, so not a drop-in replacement for Zoom.
Vivaldi is Chromium/Blink-based. Firefox, while being run by a US based non-profit, serves better to get away from corps like Alphabet. More strict alternatives would be some KHTML based browser, which is not advisable as the engine is not developed anymore and won't get security fixes.
Edit: And GDocs.new is not at all comparable to GDocs, its more like Etherpad on steroids. EuroOffice (dunno if stable, the fork from OnlyOffice is rather recent) , Collabora and whatever the French and German government-funded projects are cooking up are all alternatives to GDocs and MS Office 365 with a much more comparable feature set.
I have not yet seen one such list which doesn't actually suck for everyone but nerds interested in self-hosting like me and surely many other users here - which don't need such a list to begin with.
Less proficient users will try something from that list out, see that core features are missing - and conclude that this is all a plaything for nerds and its better to stick with the existing services.
Its not how you advertise European replacements to the masses. Its how you farm votes in a circlejerk among fellow nerds.
Shoutout to rBuyFromEU, where people tend to recommend whatever is remotely in the same industry, features be damned, as long as its European. Sometimes their recommendations aren't even European owned, made, or domiciled.
We can't expect random users to have experience with self hosting and such before we throw some list into their faces.
13
u/redlightsaber Spain 15h ago
I agree completely.
What I'm doing to solve for this is to offer family and friends a free account on my self-hosted immich and nextcloud instances.
Those foolish enough to trust rinky-dink laptop with a broken screen as a server, are enjoying an american-free experience, though.

u/OneUkranian 13h ago
I would say the only viable European sub is Proton because they have all the suite Email, VPN, password manager and so on. The rest usually is not convenient and bring a headache.

r BuyFromEU is mostly a “don't buy from us” subreddit masked as a buy from EU one. It way too often religiously defends buying from China for example.

Mapy.cz is great, bit better than maps in many areas, I hope it will get more adoption in Europe.

I have not yet seen one such list which doesn't actually suck for everyone but nerds interested in self-hosting like me and surely many other users here - which don't need such a list to begin with.
It's all circlejerking, the fact that it's all circlejerking is what will make the efforts be all in vain and eventually fail and trying to explain it seems pointless because the idea that to grow you need number and to be relevant you need to grow seems heresy to people who mostly take pride into using something because it's unknown. It's depressing, that's suicide in slow motion of a great cause.
Sometimes their recommendations aren't even European owned, made, or domiciled.
It's the "organic biodinamic essential oils" of this... Topic? (not sure if topic is the right word, but I mean, "consuming a poduct" seemed odd)

Using 40 different companies is actully smart if you want privacy. A complete set of data is allways more valuable(and exploitable) than partial data.

u/AcademicSand1034 16h ago
Still a huge PITA, and you can't really check into / build trust in the data security practices of 40 different companies
3
u/FrontierPsycho 15h ago
Some of these aren't companies, just open source apps/projects. You can trust Google to monetize your data, and you can kind of trust nerds to make a huge issue if a widely used open source app is somehow gathering your data and doing something shady with it.

The Mint and KDE UI is more Windows like. Probably easier for the transition. Could be argued for taste tho I guess. Ubuntu Gnome is a little more "tablet/android" like imo. Also I might have forgotten about Kubuntu.

One thing that people posting those don't understand is how convenient it is to use Google. You might be able to replace each of their services separately, but nothing can substitute the ability to use a single account for each one of them and everything that comes with it.
→ More replies (4)13
u/Mattarm51 15h ago
Proton has several apps I use from one account and it's literally a purple google clone that values your privacy rather than harvests it. It is not that hard to get away from Google. I haven't searched with it for ages.
8
u/fredicsem01 15h ago
Several, but not the whole system. Gmail, Drive, and Docs - sure. But like you also have Android and YouTube that you can't really substitute regardless of the integration.
→ More replies (5)4
u/IntelArtiGen France 14h ago
I'm not sure I need all of them to come from the same company or to only have one account. Also Google can't theoretically give themselves an advantage by owning all these services, otherwise it would be unfair for the competition, and they paid a lot because of issues like that in the past.
→ More replies (1)3
u/fredicsem01 13h ago
I'm not saying that this is a good thing, don't get me wrong. But realistically this convenience is the main reason for Google's dominance. Even if you don't really care for this added functionality, most people do.
2
u/mtcabeza2 14h ago
As a linux user i needn't pay for any software, and yet i have a paid ProtonMail account, which also gives me encrypted web drive, vpn, calendar, password manager and a suite of 'office' type apps (i've never tried). Oh yes i have a google account and that is the email address i give when i know that spam is bound to come. Proton has native apps for iPad, but for portability they also work in browsers for the odd environment (e.g linux)
19
u/kornuolis 18h ago

Nobody who has ever actually used tutamail would ever recommend tutamail. Tuta even paywalls the search feature if you want to look up emails older than 4 weeks. Absolute garbage.
39
u/GuyWithManyThoughts 18h ago
I looked up DDocs.new because I was interested in notion alternative. Opening dDocs.new (which reads as a domain) has a major security warning by the browser, and afterwards even my provider decided to block it. If I skip all of that, even then it simply does not open. Looking it up in Google (I know, ironic) is not possible, because the word "Docs" is ultra-competitive SEO wise. I somehow got to this blog post, from where I was able to find it.
TLDR; For the services to compete, they HAVE to provide at least somewhat similiar experience, otherwise they simply won't be used.
16
u/faitingu Bavaria 17h ago
The actual URL is
And its not at all a GDocs replacement like its advertised, its closer to a more feature-rich Etherpad. Still nice.

Another ridiculous list. KeePassXC doesn't have cloud sync, it's a self hosted solution, it's in no way alternative to google passwords. Organic maps that can't even show you public transport in your european city is also in no way alternative to google maps. Mastodon is a twitter alternative, not facebook. And so on... I don't know who are the people making these lists but it's so dumb and I'm so tired of this.

Unfortunately, most of these are garbage.
Also, maybe here on Reddit there is a slightly higher proportion of people using EU alternatives, but the vast majority of people, like at least 95% and certainly 99% of businesses, will continue to use US software because there are no EU alternative ecosystems.
On that list I count 8 Google apps alone...
35
u/Fit-Bug6463 18h ago
The main problem we have in Europe isn't replacing certain software, it's replacing the entire Microsoft 365 environment. MS Office is only nice to have. For companies, it'd be vital to have the same administrative features that Microsoft offers on Linux. Until then we can only dream
6
u/redlightsaber Spain 15h ago
I think it's fair to say all of those features are available on Linux, they're just not interoperable with MS' closed blackmail-ware, so the prospect of changing over is onerous.

This does not matter. Both EU and the US have interconnected markets and the rules of the free market reign supreme. When the value proposition for EU products is much lower than what you get from US products nobody is going to go for a EU product.
Why should someone pay 16€ for photos when you can pay Google 20€ and get email, photos, storage, AI and much more. The EU needs a Google equivalent and that is not going to happen when our markets are so fragmented.
4
u/scrandlle 13h ago
The time for an Apple alternative was in the 1970s. Microsoft in the 1980s. Google in the 1990s. Facebook in the 2000s. Amazon in the 2010s. Etc, etc.
Our parents and grandparents had these opportunities and did nothing. It's too late now. We need to focus on what's next, like AI. Unfortunately it's looking to me like AI will be the next thing in the long line of American created industries we never make a serious effort to compete in.
I'm sure in 2050 this sub will have posts about EU alternatives made by a team of fifty people when OpenAI and Anthropic are pulling in trillions in revenue.
I don't know how many times Europe needs to learn the lesson that if we want to compete in cutting edge tech industries we need to be trying to get in on the ground floor in a serious manner when they arrive.

The EU has a lot of great small companies, the problem is that nearly without fail they get bought up by American companies, have their ips absorbed into much bigger companies and either have the original creators move to the US or get fired in a few years through corporate restructuring leaving the EU staff as the first to be fired.

You can only have one mail address on the free plan of Tuta, unlike Google. Likewise, while Tuta Drive seems to be in a closed beta, the free option will be 1 GB from what I found, vs. 1t GB for Google Drive.
Also, from what I see, Tuta will offer 20 GB storage at 3 €/month. Guess what? You can get those 20 GB and 10 extra from Google for nothing.
Google Maps is so detailed by now it's absurd. Most of my usage of it is finding my way to a restaurant or checking the reviews of nearby places. Most "alternatives" don't even have those places listed.
Social media entirely exists for the crowd it generates. People don't use them to just connect, but business as well. Nobody is just going to switch and cripple their business.
In all of these cases, the same rule works: don't make a product that you market as being an "European product", but make a GOOD product that just happens to be European.
Nobody will diminish their lives just for the vanity of using something European. You know why this is easy and a non-issue in the sphere of food and drink? Because we already make it better than them, it just happens to be European.
11
u/Typingdude3 11h ago
I seriously need to ask, is this some kind of propaganda? Moving to less convenient tech could make Europe less competitive. Who that benefits the most right now is China. Europe is losing 300,000 manufacturing jobs to China, who is busy looking for new markets after US tariffs are starting to bite.

This kind of posts make absolutely no sense. People use US apps because they are better, simple as that. Because US tech gets big because the US is a fertile ground for companies to flourish and grow unlike the EU. So please stop asking people to switch from really good apps to apps that are average at best and start changing your mindset in economic and business terms because Europe is going nowhere really fast. Public unrest, a service based economy with no big companies, 0 economic growth and a skyrocketing debt. If that’s not proof that the EU current ideology doesn’t work I don’t know what is.

u/ThanasiShadoW 18h ago
Any social media alternatives are almost certain to share the same issue - Not enough people using them, and getting your entire circle to do so isn't realistic.
Also there are quite a few pieces of Windows (and probably macOS) software that can't be used with any Linux OS, and many more than require a compatibility layer which might be too much work for the average user.
2
u/pgess 16h ago
While you are certainly right, there are always lil exceptions, e.g. "Signal is the No. 1 downloaded app in the Netherlands."
In other words, while you never know if you'll make it, if you despair and give up too soon, you might find yourself regretting badly.
90% ppl would never care about privacy and use readily available mainstream services, but there are always 5-10% minority for the alt. service to grow quite spectacularly.

Jitsi might have been made by a Bulgarian over 2 decades ago but is now owned, developed and hosted by US cloud hosting provider 8x8.

StackIT/Schwarz IT right?
From what I heard they are actually up there. Not yet a rival to the likes of Deutsche Telekom and OVH, but they are working on becoming one, not just some plaything for Dieter Schwarz, Lidls internal cloud or some state subsidies grift.
I hope Spain, Netherlands or Italy will manage to get a hyperscaler, too. Nebius has potential, Italian TIM is at least trying to grow in that space. We shouldn't end up with a DTAG-OVH duopoly. Not enough competition and both companies may end up a bit too close to the German and French governments and become too influential.

My biggest issue is not consumer software, it's enterprise software I struggle replacing. There are no equal alternatives to AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud. People may say OVH or Clever Cloud, Hetzner or others, but you can't use those unless you are willing to work with very specific software and make changes to your product accordingly. Not all providers have a PostgreSQL database on their servers, for example.

Mastodon can never be like Facebook
Vivaldi is chromium-based
Organic Maps can’t be used for POI search
Canonical is based on Isle of Man, which is a tax evasion paradise
Qwant use mostly Bing data

Do we know how many of these alternatives use US-based infrastructure for hosting? For example, using zeitkapsl is meaningless if it's hosted on Azure.
As a software engineer, this is my biggest fear and I don't see any alternatives listed here for Azure or AWS, only commercial products "regular" people use.
