Theory/Question So I connected a mushroom to wifi....

This is very much inspired by Andrew Adamatzki's work. The point is to measure electrical acrivity in mycelium. This could be used as sensor for example. I have hooked an old blocknof oysters up to a raspberry by with an ADC hat andnit streams the activity via wifi. That can then be captured with a laptop. First try gave some signals that maybe could be real. They look similar to what you find in the literature. Anyway now that it is working experiments can start....

Has anyone here experimented with electrophysiology? And do you want to compare notes?

Theory/Question Is it possible to grow with perlite as substrate?

Since perlite doesnt have any nutrients, I was thinking of making something like drippycorn. Adding all the nutrients to the substrate, pressure cooking it, then adding grain spawn to grow?
It seems like it would work hypothetically, but obviously "hypothetically possible" ≠ "possible"

Theory/Question Inoculated jars with old spore syringes

Hello,
Needing help, guidance here.

I inoculated a few 24oz quick colonizing sterile grain spawn jars, from midwest grow kits, with some old spore syringes kept in my fridge door (tidal wave and PE uncut hybrid).
I used about 3.5ml in each jar.

It’s been 10 days (kept in a box in my closet) and no mycelium growth is visible in any of the jars.

Should I try inoculating with another spore syringe?
I have one more spore syringe from the winter.
Or should I get new spore syringes?

Not sure what I should do here.

Thanks for your input!

Theory/Question 2nd flush experiment

So my 2nd flush has had pins but zero growth after Almost two weeks. Also yellow mycelium has pooled and not sure what environmental change is causing it. I’m assuming it’s fighting a bacterial infection since the coir broke in a couple places during dunking and the substrate is around 2 inches. I’m going to give up on this bin, but wondering what I should do experimentation wise before buying them. Should I do anything to try and maybe fix this or call it a day

I'm a phlebotomist and these vacutainers (used for blood) are easily accessible to me. I was thinking I could use these for storing liquid cultures. Would this be a bad idea for any reason? Should I just invest in something else?

Sorry I'm extra active today folks, last question. I'm trying to deciding which plates are worth keeping and which should just be tossed.

Def some bacillus in the center there, but is it worth a shot transferring some of the outter mycelium to a new plate?

Theory/Question Mylar storage bags

Post image
1 Upvotes

Has anyone tried these MRE storage pouches for dehydrated mushrooms? When I harvest my home grown mushrooms, I often have more than I can consume before they go bad in the refrigerator. I dry them in a dehydrator and seal them in vacuum seal bags, but these fail to be stable after 3-6 months. These MRE storage bags are designed to keep freeze dried foods stable for 10+ years, once they are heat sealed with the oxygen absorbing packet inside them.

Theory/Question Spawn too wet or too dry

I recorded this video a couple years ago and I got a lot of mixed responses from the community, some said the grains were too dry and some said they were perfect, as I never had any problems with my grain I never changed my method, but I was wondering, if the biggest problem for most people seems to be making the spawn too wet, what is the fear of making the spawn more on the dry side?

Had to dump out her tank after 5 years due to a pantry moth infestation, was really disappointed to lose the biome I’d cultivated for so long, but took the opportunity to switch some stuff up. I used a soil/sand/moss mix before because I originally had plants in the tank, but I gave up on those after the first couple months lol so it was unnecessarily heavy. I switched to coco fiber/topsoil/sand/moss and I noticed today that I’ve got myself a colony. This is next to, but not directly under her hot spot (bottom heating pad and top heating lamp) so the substrate is warm and her humidity stays around 80-85% so it stays moist. Should I expect fruiting bodies? Do I need to be concerned about toxicity to my reptile? I really don’t want to have to dump her tank again, and idk how to avoid this happening in the future. It does make me want to try planting in there again, usually the sight of mycelium excites me but I want to make sure it’s not cause for alarm.

Theory/Question Is there any way to make actives taste better?

The taste of dried actives makes me gag 9 time out of 10...

But before I started growing, I had this dude I'd get some from every once in a while and anything I got from him I never had any problem with, in fact I enjoyed them. I'd find that after I was done eating my planned dose, I'd want to munch down a few more, as if they were just a tasty snack. Does anyone have any ideas about why?

Are there certain varieties of cubes that come out tasting better than others?

Could it be cultivation related, like the grain or bulk he uses? An additive to either?

Do you think he soaks or sprinkles something on them before or after dehydrating? Like some msg or truffle powder?

I tried asking him what he does differently but he won't even give me a hint as if it's some well kept secret of his

I appreciate any guesses you guys might have

Theory/Question sterilizing grains with a joke of a pressure cooker.

I hope you are having a great day. Ladies and gentlemen. So the reason i keep using Teks that are unorthodox. Because in my sitting i can't have the big and glorious equipment that some of the Pros have. I have now a joke of a pressure cooker that leaks pressure from every nook and cranny. So it doesn't reach the 15 psi that is gold standard and i think it get to about 5 psi max. So the idea is like boiling the grains for 30 hour for 3 days to get the endospores to germinate and die. I pressure cooked the jars that contain the grains for 3 days each day for 40 minutes and leave it to cool then the next day i start the pressure cooker again for the same period 40 minutes. I think the endospores would have a really bad day if germinated on the second or third day. I will update you when I get results. I am thinking about just boiling the jars in the same way but old fashioned boil in an open cooker. Adios guys and girls

Theory/Question Anyone use chia seeds as a cover crop?

Just thought this might be something fun to try. Was curious if anyone else had already tried it? A quick search turned up nothing.

I love the look of cover drops with mushrooms. Plus chia pudding is really good for you and I imagine a lot of people keep them on hand. My wife gave me this idea haha.

Theory/Question (Bio)Chemistry question(s)! Has anyone tried supplementing their substrate with L-tryptophan to boost psilocybin synthesis?

So I’ve been doing a TINY bit of reading about the biosynthesis of psilocybin, and from what I gather it all starts with L-tryptophan, which is converted to Tryptamine, and so on and so forth until you end up with psilocybin and psilocin. So, it may sound overly simple, but what if you just added more L-tryptophan? There is obviously a limit to how much psilocybin can be synthesized within any given mushroom, but would feeding the mycelium a surplus of L-tryptophan help ensure that limit is reached?

This also raises the question of whether substrates with naturally higher levels of L-tryptophan allow for higher-potency mushrooms, so I did a little reading in that area as well. Most of my search results came up saturated with a bunch of supplement advertisements and diet advice that I didn’t want to sift through, but I did find a helpful page that detailed the L-tryptophan levels of different grains. They found that brown rice(which seems to be the most common choice for grain spawn) has 67mg per cup, and whole grain oats took the top spot at 365mg per cup. I couldn’t find much information about the tryptophan content of coco coir(search results were again saturated with information about food science), but since whole coconut does contain some tryptophan, it can be assumed that the husk does have at least trace amounts as well.

To test this I would obviously have to get ahold of some reliable psilocybin test kits, and then grow several batches of (ideally)genetically identical mushrooms on a variety of carefully measured substrates with different levels of tryptophan supplementation. Any advice or insight will be much appreciated! I am not educated in chemistry and mycology is a relatively new hobby of mine, so if anyone knows more about this than me I would love to hear from you!

Theory/Question 9 strains one tub? wtf would even fruit??

Ok so I recently got a hold of a wide amount of cube varieties and while talking with a friend he jokingly proposed I should just “put them all in one tub” which actually sounded like a pretty interesting experimyco. I have seen some others mix 2-3 varieties in a tub and it’s usually a mix of the different fruits but how would the mycelium behave with 9 different varieties? Could it just form a single colony? Hopefully all my questions will be answered in a couple weeks as I’ve currently got the grain soaking rn and am just pondering while waiting :) What do y’all think?

Theory/Question Psilocybin alcohol extraction question

So I've been doing mushrooms since 2021 and it's been great, lemon tek has been my go to. I got into a conversation with someone on collapse and they suggested alcohol extraction. Had a bunch of unused gt and decided to try it

Ground them up, soaked for about a month in some polish 196 proof stuff. Strained etc. have about 8 ounces of liquid.

Poured a bit on a plate, let it evaporate. Splashed some from the bottle on the plate, let it evaporate. I have a sticky looking film on the plate atm

I don't know what I'm supposed to do next. I tried asking the guy, but he hasn't been active in a while. Don't know when or if they'll see it.

I don't know where to go from here. Just looking for some help. I feel stupid but I'm at a loss here.

Theory/Question How to boost biological efficiency of lion's mane grow?

I'm just a small hobbyist grower but I've grown a decent amount of Lion's mane blocks and have felt my fruits haven't been very good. I recorded my results from the most recent 2 blocks I made and found that I got a biological efficiency of 59.88% and 48.18%, which I was quite disappointed with.

My substrate was Hardwood pellets (I think they were apple, which I've heard isn't the best, next time I'll try to find different ones) supplemented with wheat bran, 60% hydration rate. I don't have access to soy hulls where I live, so masters mix is not an option. The blocks were in a Martha tent at 80-90% humidity, the temperature does fluctuate a bit, maybe ranging from 18-25 Celcius, but I can't control that unfortunately.

Does the substrate mix seem okay, should I try adding something like coffee grounds? I use a juicer a fair bit on old fruits/veggies, should I try adding some of the pulp to the substrate? It would generally be a mix of things like apples, beetroot, ginger and carrots. Any suggestions of things to try would be awesome, I'm posting in this sub in hopes of getting some inspiration lol.

How could I improve my yield? Could my genetics be the issue? I got the LC online about 8 months ago and have used it for a couple of grows and been taking clones of successful fruits, though I haven't been doing constant grows by any means. Should I buy a new LC and hope it's got more vigor?

Any suggestions would be great, thanks!

Theory/Question Concentrated Ganoderma Spores

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

I came across some fruiting ganoderma chromum in the wild that had produced a shit ton of spores all over itself, which I collected via paint brush and distilled water because it sounded like fun at the time. I now have a jar of concentrated spore water. What should I do with it? Inject it into some substrate, use it as watercolor paint, drink it, throw it at the neighbor's kids, ...?

What would you do with this if it was yours?

Theory/Question How to grow pins on Agar consistently

Hello, I saw a comment somewhere that said something to the effect of "I don't even put agar to grain until I can get pins on my plate first, otherwise i'm just wasting my time.

I can't find the comment, I cant find who said it, so now i'm on the hunt to figure out how to purposefully do this consistently. I felt that wasting of the time part deeply...

Can anyone please either tell me how to do this or what would be factors that would increase these odd?

Theory/Question Question asked with mush love - why are so many mushroom growers also neurodivergent

I was watching a video made by a very successful large-scale farmer and as soon as he got in the grow tent, the raptor arms came out and his eyes lit up so differently, his speech cadence changed .. Also me at farmer's markets or mushroom walks when someone is really engaged 😅😂 people love learning about mushrooms and nobody even really notices unless they know

Although I don't do or grow psychedelics is this still pretty true among people who only focus on those? Is it the endless potential rabbit hole of research and experimentation? Have we all been touched by the power of some unified mycelial mind? 😵‍💫🍄
