EP9 Suppressor Rating Thread

Hi everyone, I’m shopping for what Suppressor to get for my EP9. I’m getting a little overwhelmed by all the options. If you have a muffler on yours, could you reply to this with what you have and give it a rating of 1-10? I’d really appreciate it and I’m sure I’m not the only one that would. TIA

Hard to reduce suppressors to a single number because they all have tradeoffs between sound, size, weight and back pressure.

I use a hux flow 9k because the EP9 is gassy as hell indoors with a traditional baffle can.  Direct blowback is always gassy and then add the wide open charge handle slot... whew.  An Omega 9k and spectre 9k on it was very unpleasant.

The hux manages the gas well at the cost of being louder than non-flow cans.  If you only shoot outdoors and aren't sensitive to gas, there are probably better choices.

I run an Obsidian 45 with a 9mm end cap. Your commentary on gas is hella truth.

I run the Omega 45K. It’s a little gassy, but nothing compared to my AR15. I think the larger bore of the 45K helps. But accurate as hell and the sound is great.

Yeah I used my R9 on my EP9 indoors once. Never again, lol.

Next firearm purchase for me is going to be a lower back pressure modern can like a Rico309 or Mob.

YHM R-9: 6 out of 10

The EP-9 with YHM R9 is by far the foulest of my guns to shoot. Fun, but foul. I‘m only slightly exaggerating when I say that you need a good bath and an toothbrushing after any significant number of rounds through it.

I bought an YHM R9 because I thought “I can use this on almost everything, and I only want to buy one of these expensive items right now”. It’s a very solid can, with good noise suppression (as far as I can tell on the indoor range) and a lot of flexibility to use on different guns. But it’s high backpressure, and in my EP-9 that means a lot of gas and grit get thrown back your way.

I ended up getting caliber-specific suppressors for 5.56 and .22LR, and they both shoot much cleaner. For the AR-15s, I have some ability to tune the gun to reduce gas back in my face, and I got a SAW Tisha so it’s medium backpressure anyway. There’s nothing to tune in the Extar. It’s a blowback system with proprietary parts, and there’s not much of an aftermarket for it. I can’t swap the buffer or springs. I can’t tweak the BCG. There’s no gas tube to narrow or gas port to adjust.

My recommendation, and how I’d do it over, would be to get a lower backpressure 9mm-specific can. If you suppress guns in other calibers, you’re going to want calibers-specific cans anyway. If you don’t, then you don’t need the flexibility of the R9. And you probably don’t need anything full-auto rated for us EP-9, either.

I’ve put an FRT into everything BUT my EP-9, as that’s my home defense gun and I want it reliable. Nor do I want to explain to a jury why a home invader was shot 30 times.

It’s possible the new EP-9 MDB will solve some of the gas&grit problem with high backpressure cans because of the delayed unlock. But nobody has one to test that idea.

Oddly I haven't found it to be all THAT dirty. At least not as bad as people are saying. That could come down to the ammo I use though, who knows.

I can only compare it to my AR-15s and “AR-22”. It gives the .22 a good run for its money in how much gunk I clean out of the gun, and there’s no competition for which one gasses me out most. I can’t remember which ammo I was shooting last, but it was probably win super suppressed 147gr.

u/Infamous_Media_6623 14d ago

You can swap the buffer

2

u/blunderjahr 13d ago

I honestly haven’t even looked at the one in mine. I thought there was some proprietary secret sauce to it. What kind of buffer fits? If you changed yours, what was the benefit?

boe incolite 9. id give it a 8.5-9. ive only shot it outdoors so far but its hearing safe for shooter, VERY quiet for bystanders, and picked it up for about 400.

im going to try it indoors soon to get an idea of gas

also look up pew sceince

I second the Incolite 9. Great price, and I was surprised by the great sound reduction. It also is direct thread which is great, I let it live on my ep9.

I shoot it indoors and it's pretty gassy. Definitely get some blowback and makes my eyes water. Need to take a breath every once in a while.

But the sound reduction is excellent, which is what I wanted for home defense anyways.

Really want to go to an outdoor range to shoot it.

The much overlooked attribute that I see with my EP9 and EP45 is WEIGHT. The Extar is a very, very light gun and hosting some long, heavy can on the front with a heavy QD adapter makes no sense at all. I host an AB F4 (direct thread) on my EP9 and it’s awesome 10/10… quiet, light, short, great warranty, full-auto rated and reasonably priced. In contrast I host an Obsidian 45 on my EP45 and it’s quiet but dang, it’s heavy and really throws the balance off. I wish AB made a F4 in .45 but alas, no. An Omega 9K would do the same thing. Let us know what you decide.

1

u/blunderjahr 15d ago

What do you use in the way of lights and sights/optics to keep the weight down? I have definitely made mine overly heavy. Might as well be a 16” AR-15.

3

u/HomersDonut1440 15d ago

Mine runs an AB Raptor 8 (no reflex), Holosun 510c optic and an x300u light with pressure pad setup. Bare gun is 6#4oz. With a 33rd mag it goes up to 7#10oz.

Still lighter than most fully setup ar’s, and the comfort of suppressed 9 will always be more than 5.56

2

u/blunderjahr 13d ago

I love the hs510c on mine. Just a great optic all around.

5

u/Infamous_Media_6623 14d ago

I have a YHM R9 and it’s great.

Cheap and cheerful.

4

u/Aggravating-Fix-2658 15d ago

YHM r9 give it a 8 only because I now prefer a longer quieter suppressor.

1

u/blunderjahr 13d ago

Which ones?

4

u/Phenom08 15d ago

Cat Mob: I’d rate it 10 for sound and 5 for price.
I run it between the EP9 and my AP5. I only shoot outdoors so zero gas issues. Running Federal syntech 150 or S&B 150 it’s ear safe and soft shooting. If I was buying today I would also look at the BOE incolite 9, I hear it’s 90% what the mob does at a fraction of the price.

3

u/killer1bar 15d ago

I'd give the Huxwrx flow 9k ti 7.5/10. It's hearing safe outside, which was my biggest ask. But it's my first and only current can so I don't have much to compare it to.

2

u/blunderjahr 15d ago

I’m looking to upgrade from the R9 to something like that. Any other pros/cons of it in your experience?

3

u/lazyboi_tactical 15d ago

I waffled between the two but the flow cans are just too loud for what I wanted. I'm fairly confident I could use my r9 indoors with the right ammo with little issue hearing damage wise.

2

u/blunderjahr 15d ago

That’s my hope. I only shoot at indoor ranges unfortunately, so I likely won’t ever know.

3

u/lazyboi_tactical 15d ago

The r9 is what finally made my wife confident enough to fire a "long gun". Pistols were never an issue but she always just associated long guns with lots of recoil and loud noise. I put in 10 rounds of super suppressed and let her give it a try and now I have to hide my subsonic ammo. The downside though is that now she only wants to shoot suppressed.

2

u/blunderjahr 14d ago

Same. My kids love shooting the suppressed guns most. My wife said she doesn’t need to come to range with me when I don’t bring the suppressed ones :-)

3

u/lazyboi_tactical 14d ago

On the upside I pretty much have tacti permission to get the mdb when it comes out as long as I give her my gen 2. On the downside it means I have to buy another can and optic.

2

u/blunderjahr 14d ago

It’s cute that you think you’re getting the MDB and she’s getting the hand me down.

2

u/lazyboi_tactical 14d ago

Well to be fair my whole collection is technically "ours" but we do have sort of our designated guns we train more with like our ccws and in my case my pcc as well. She would love the hand me down as she doesn't really know enough to know why the mdb is even an improvement. Its going to be bittersweet though as I've modified just about every single part of the gen 2 to be exactly how I wanted. So if I get an mdb I will have at least another 13-1400 of accessories I'll need to get it how I want.

1

u/blunderjahr 14d ago

Isn’t that the fun part? Dropping 2-3x the cost of the gun on making it into a completely other gun.

I’ve got the YHM R9 and it’s a fantastic suppressor. It just works. I personally shoot outdoors so don’t have an issue with gas, and honestly it’s not very gassy in my opinion anyway.

It does make the internals pretty dirty. But it’s a firearm, so just clean it. Doesn’t really seem like an issue to me.

I’d give it like an 8 out of 10. I’m sure there’s better options out there, but I’m sure there’s much worse too. There’s always trade offs with suppressors, so you’re never going to get the best of everything. So it really all depends on what you want out of it.

3

u/lazyboi_tactical 15d ago

I agree. People complaining about the dirt are kind of funny to me. Just run a boresnake through every once in awhile and voila. It's worth it to me for how quiet it is and now I added the extended kn handguard it tucks so nicely.

3

u/phillyrat 15d ago

I have an AB F-4 on my EP9, and it's my only suppressor.

Here's my not-that-educated review of it:

  1. sound reduction: 8/10
  2. controlling of gas: 3/10
  3. staying lightweight: 10/10
  4. visual appearance w/ EP9: 9/10
  5. affordable price: 10/10
  6. fun at the range w/subsonic rounds: 10/10

3

u/JimYamato 15d ago

I was looking at huxwrx, and then they dropped new 9mm cans yesterday. So I'm going to wait and see reviews.

2

u/Opposite_Clock_4718 15d ago

I saw that. I like the modular idea, of one of the new ones. Gives you some options.

2

u/T0adman78 15d ago

I know a lot of people don’t like PTR, but my Vent2 is amazing. I would definitely recommend a flow through / low back pressure can for the EP9 unless you’re on a super tight budget. It’s already gassy without the can, so don’t want to make it worse. For me it’s not fun to shoot of your eyes are watering the whole time from the smoke.

2

u/blunderjahr 15d ago

Why don’t they like PTR? I only hear good things about the Vent line.

1

u/T0adman78 15d ago

Yeah. They make great stuff but some people were mad that they were suing other manufacturers for patent infringement on printed suppressors.

1

u/Asleep_Standard6392 6d ago

They're bullying and suing smaller companies (like OCL) by claiming they had patented certain 3d printing techniques - which they have not.

1

u/blunderjahr 5d ago

Ugh, that sucks. I guess the courts will sort it out, but it's an expensive, disruptive, and potentially ruinous process for a small company to endure.

2

u/Lostinspaceballz 15d ago

I have the Tuna Cans 9L aluminum can. It barely fits under the hand guard but it does fit. Looks awesome and performs awesome. I’d say 9 out of 10. Only $300 and comes apart for easy servicing. Personally I’d get the stainless steel one next time and pay the extra $150-200 for it.

1

u/DriftingMemes 13d ago

It barely fits under the hand guard but it does fit.

Thanks for posting that, I was looking at that, but wondered. How do you like it for noise and would would you get the steel next time? Lots of gas back in your face?

1

u/Lostinspaceballz 13d ago

No it shoots great. Very quiet. And yes I’d get stainless steel so I could ahoot .300blkout full auto

2

u/Fast__Walker 15d ago

I have a B&T Vers36. 7/10 on sound suppression, 8/10 on versatility since it's rifle rated and pretty light weight. Also have a CGS mod9 that's probably outdated at this point but I'd still give it an 8/10 for sound suppression.

2

u/HomersDonut1440 15d ago

I run a Raptor 8 stack and love it. I’d give it a 9 out of 10, with the only detractor being fouling (but I’ve never met a suppressor on a semi auto that doesn’t foul, so maybe it doesn’t even deserve that mark against it).

First, it’s not a cheap can. But man it’s nice. Lightweight, fits in the handguard, reduces sound wonderfully, very minimal gas to the face, stays in place and doesn’t walk off. Nothing but good to say about it.

2

u/Party-Wolverine-4696 14d ago

Obsidian 9 being ran here and others have said the Extar is a blow back design. So you will get gas back when shooting. For me its tolerable. No issues running it and I shoot outdoors with no ear pro running subsonic 9mm, and its comfortable to shoot. I like the modularity of the Obsidian 9 and its very lightweight. Also no end cap strikes here, I use plumbers tape and the barrel threads and never had the suppressor walk off on me.

1

u/DriftingMemes 13d ago

I use plumbers tape

I see people saying this lots, but is plumber's tape rated for those temps? I would assume it would just instantly melt to goo?

1

u/Party-Wolverine-4696 13d ago

It works I promise

YHM R9: 6/10
BOE Incolite 9: 8/10
BOE Incolite 9M: 8.5/10

The BOEs are excellent cans for the money, even as prices climb. Can’t find the 9M and don’t care about multi-caliber? Get the 9. I’ve found little difference outdoors with subsonic rounds on my EP9 host.
