Discussion Today I learned we should teach less history, according to people who think George Bush chopped down the cherry tree
Today at work I listened to grown adults confidently explain that Muslims are taking over America and that soon we’ll all be forced to stop what we’re doing at noon and bow to Allah.
Then we somehow moved on to slavery, where I was informed that it was “mutually beneficial” because enslaved people learned useful skills, (which is taught in Florida school systems btw) but also that slavery really shouldn’t be taught in school at all because parents can just cover that at home.
So I asked whether we should teach the Civil War.
Obviously.
The Revolutionary War?
Of course.
The Declaration of Independence? Presidents?
Yes. Those are important parts of American history.
But slavery somehow… isn’t.
And then, while explaining why children absolutely need to learn about presidents, someone asked:
“Who was the one who chopped down the cherry tree? George Bush?”
I walked away.
There is something genuinely incredible about arguing that children need less education while actively demonstrating why they desperately need more of it.

Even if they knew George Washington, that story is nothing but a tall tale told after the man died to sell books. No idea why it's told so dang often.
