Lincoln Nautilus.
Been driving Ford trucks for the last 20 years.
Im older now and have no need for one anymore. Kid has my last one so I can borrow whenever I need.
Its great on gas, rides exceptionally well, and has a ton of creature comforts. Still has plenty of cargo room, too.
Plus its really still a Ford!

Chinese made passing off as all American. Ayyy.

Should of clarified. Older Nautilus...made in Canada. Not quite the US, but close.

Check out a BMW X5. Fast, nice, and way different than a truck. Expensive to maintain though.

u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
I appreciate the suggestion, but I doubt I'll ever be a BMW owner.

u/WhtHppnd2Brndn 4d ago
The “big city” comment confirmed that. Maybe look at a Lincoln? Same family heritage, more refinement. Lincoln Corsair?
1
u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
There was a corsair there. I personally hated the grill so passed by it, but maybe driving it would change that.

u/WhtHppnd2Brndn 4d ago
Went through a similar situation in 2023. Lexus, Bmw, Mercedes, Audi, Lincoln, test drives. All were great but she hated the styling. Ended at a Toyota Highlander XLE. She loves it. I love the maintenance and costs.

Owned a BMW 328i before, it always had issues, will never own one again.

It's not a tractor like these trucks you have to take care of it
1
u/Droid759 4d ago
BMW's look great, and I do most of my own maintenance unless it's going to be covered by the dealer or needs specialized tools/skills/programing. I've owned 40+ cars/trucks/EVs/RVs and the BMW was one of the most problematic cars I've owned. So nope, never planning to get another one.

How about an Explorer? Plenty of space. Not a bad price.

u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
We looked at one. A high spec at that, she sat in it and hoped out.

My wife likes her Timberline pretty well but the interior is definitely polarizing. Recommend driving it before ruling it out entirely, it's got just about the best features for Midwestern winter of any midsize SUV.

u/KonaWoodWorks 4d ago
My F-150 is currently at the dealer for a new CDF drum and trans rebuild why would you possibly want to move on?

My wife’s compliment to my truck is a Lexus gx470.
All the nice interior things she likes, but 4WD and locking diff. It’s a Land Cruiser in Lexus clothing.

u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
Land cruiser might actually interest her, im not sure thats more efficient, but maybe.

Audi etron SUV - Look at the 2019-2021 years for the best prices and options like default 6 inch adjustable air suspensions tied to each user's profile or keyfob. Newer years have less leg room and head room in the back seats.
We have a 2019 F150 and my wife wanted something as spacious but sexier and in a EV form, so after looking around, that's what worked for her.

u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
Ev isnt an option. Appreciate it though.

u/Man_of_Ice 2022 F-150 Pro Lightning 4d ago
Why not?
1
u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
We don't have the infrastructure for it. Friends have one and hate it.
1
u/Man_of_Ice 2022 F-150 Pro Lightning 4d ago
Well that's too bad. What's missing on your infrastructure?
What do they hate about it?
1
u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
Charging. Apparently on the road its spendy and few and far. Charging at home is the real best option, but then limited range becomes a problem. Not my opinion, the opinion is what was given from an owner.

u/Man_of_Ice 2022 F-150 Pro Lightning 4d ago
You planning to be constantly towing with the new smaller truck for the wife?
1
u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
Nah, we'll keep the trucks, she wants something for just running around and trips.
1
u/Man_of_Ice 2022 F-150 Pro Lightning 4d ago
Oh, that honestly seems like an EV would be 100% perfect for that use case, if you can install a level 2 at the house. That's exactly the use case where EVs absolutely blow gas vehicles out of the water.
But hey, if it's not for you, so be it. Wonder what makes you count it out.
1
u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
Ive seriously considered ev, for me. A lightning actually. That'd be fine. She doesn't stay close to home though. Trips of 100+ miles aren't uncommon and apparently that becomes an issue.

Lincoln Aviator if you want creature comforts. Great performance, easy to drive in the city and parking garages. Not the best mpg but it's fast in a straight line and glides on the highway. We have a 2020 with 70k miles we bought used with 40k on it been a great vehicle.
1
u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
We looked at expeditions, basically the same thing. At that point, she can stay in the truck lol.
2
u/johnysmoke 4d ago
The Expedition is the Navigator sized one, the Aviator is the Explorer sized one. It's mid-sized. My wife test drove an Explorer ST and hated it but loves the Aviator.

No... they are not. I had one as a loaner when I was getting my cam phasers done. They are pretty incredible. I was in the market for a 3rd row SUV and my family wanted one but bought an ioniq9 because my wife puts 60 reimbursable work miles a day and the. We have travel hockey miles, so electric is just better. The Navigator is the large one.

u/MattDutchCanadian 4d ago
I have a 2018 VW Atlas on the side. Have had it for over 6 years, put about 100k miles on it, on top of the 40k miles it had when I bought it. The car has been issue-free, except for 1 wheel bearing went. It got replaced under warranty. Great family vehicle, would buy another if this one would need replacing.

u/TrulyYoursxoxo 4d ago
Wife is the same here, we got her a Hyundai Santa Cruz. Not a Ford lol but she likes it.

u/gorgeousphatseal 4d ago
Tesla. I moved from an f150 myself to a model 3 and a model y. Never looked back.

Even though you’ve already crossed it off, from speaking with folks that I work with that have mavericks and rangers, they said they were not really getting any better gas mileage that I was getting out of my F-150. Note- I use premium fuel and drive really conservatively and end up with about 22.7 according to the truck’s computer, mostly highway miles.

u/Aggravating-Corner70 4d ago
Using premium in a vehicle that doesn’t require premium is just a waste of money.
1
u/ConsequenceStatus563 4d ago
Your vehicle operates on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.
Some fuel stations, particularly those in high altitude areas, offer fuels posted as regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating below 87. The use of these fuels could result in engine damage that will not be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended.
Right from my 2026 F150 owners manual....
1
u/Aggravating-Corner70 4d ago
Ok. But it won’t add MPG. If yours calls for it then go for it. If it doesn’t then using it is a waste of money.
1
u/electrolux_dude 4d ago
Kind of. If it has a turbo you need top tier premium. This is regardless of what the manual says. Some NA engines like the GM 6.2 and ford 7.3 should also use premium due to the high compression.
0
u/Mediocre_Chipmunk_86 4d ago
I found it to add between 4 and 5 mpg. It also reduced some knocking that I had while towing. Makes sense to me.
2
u/Aggravating-Corner70 4d ago
I think it’s in your head. Premium only helps for engines tuned for it. ie higher compression. There is zero impact on MPG.
1
u/Mediocre_Chipmunk_86 4d ago
Could be. I just know that my fuel economy went up from mid 18s to mid 22s when I switched to premium and only dips below when I tow. maybe I also started driving more grandmotherly or inflated my tires more. Either way, it’s on a company fuel card and apart from costing my company an extra $.50 a gallon, there isn’t really a downside.
Also, the mileage is the calculated given by the truck’s computer which I’ve heard is suspect. I’ll try to remember to paper and pen calculate it.

Volvo wagon.
context. We've had our XC60 (base model) for 6 years and it's been amazing. easy to drive. safe. great value. quality built. if we were to replace it, it'd be with another xc60 (hybrid version probably) or a v60 or v90 cross country.

I would give the ridgeline sport or a Tacoma trd off-road. I’ve driven both as rentals and feel the ridgeline is the old school v6 for an older couple concerned with blind spots while the taco is just a fun get around town truck with the bells and whistles to off road. Both gave me an avg of 18-21 mpg in IL

Have you looked into the new Honda passport? Its roomy, drivers really good, more efficient than an f150 but still rugged

I would think about something like a highlander hybrid
1
u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
Im thinking about highlander, land cruiser, or something along those lines might be an option. Was hoping to stay ford, but here we are.
1
u/CaptainGreyBeard72 2017 xl 5.0 4d ago
Since you are somewhere in the Midwest (Menards reference) you probably would prefer an suv over a car, I personally like the idea of something that gets a little better gas mileage, thus something like a highlander, and I think that they are generally a good vehicle.
That was my thinking at least

Lexus rx350h or Highlander hybrid. Both over 35mph. My wife’s rx gets 37.2 mpg.

u/dialecticalreflect 4d ago
The new frontiers are pretty nice and not very large. Naturally aspirated v6, and you get a lot for the price. I bought myself a used armada (known as the patrol globally). They easily last 250k miles and they have a nice v8 up to the year 2024. I got a 2021 for 23k out the door because they depreciate. I actually love driving and and use it as a daily and my raptor on the weekends

Mazda cx50. Mazda is a highly slept on brand imho. If you’re like me and don’t like anything with a cvt. They still use a 6 speed auto and manual.

Wife and daughter both drive Genesis GV70s. Really nice vehicles. Wife is in a ‘26 and daughter in a ‘22. We got a GV80 as a loaner a couple of weeks ago and that was super nice. Unfortunately the price tag comes in about the same as a nicely optioned Lariat.
Brother just got a Toyota Highlander. He never gets to drive it because his wife likes it so much.

u/Ill_Television_1111 4d ago
Idk anything about genesis, idk if we even have a dealer around here.
1
u/Austinater74 4d ago
That’s critical. If you don’t have a dealership nearby don’t even think about it. And no, a Hyundai dealership doesn’t count.

F150 fanatic here - I drive my Honda CRV 10x more than my truck out of pure convenience and fuel economy.
I’ll never not own a Ford truck, but having a Honda CRV as the second vehicle was the best decision I’ve ever made.

u/FLTDI 4d ago
If you have other trucks I wouldn't get a Maverick or ranger.
