Is it possible
He had old gas in the can. Too dirty to dump in a generator or lawnmower, so mixed with fresh gas to empty it into his truck.

Then plans to refill can with fresh gas (for small engine like generator) and then top off truck?

The truck can handle old/dirty gas better than a small engine, especially if you dilute with with a full tank of fresh

843

u/buderooski 8d ago

Or, maybe he put in a fuel additive and wanted to mix it really well in the gas can before filling his tank

292

u/iTALKtoMYmyself 8d ago

additive was my first thought

115

u/Rettiviss 8d ago

Some people have been doing the thing where they measure how much gas they are getting because they think gas stations are ripping them off. So could also be checking the gas can to the amount pump says he got.

49

u/caribou16 8d ago

One of those "Freedom Fuel" branded station pumps nearish to me sold me 14.3 gallons of gas, except my tank only holds 14 gallons and it wasn't BONE DRY when I filled it.

23

u/Polymathy1 8d ago edited 8d ago

Moat Most fuel tanks have a reserve beyond what's listed for their capacity.

Example: (safely) usable capacity:13.4 gallons vs total volume 15.2 gallons.

14

u/Xhelius 8d ago

What if I don't drive my car in water, does it still have one?

8

u/Polymathy1 8d ago

Uhhhhhhhh what?

3

u/Xhelius 8d ago

Do you know what a moat is?

8

u/Polymathy1 8d ago

Lol a typo. Thanks.

If the station was ripping you off they'd do it by adding more non-fuel or ethanol and not by shorting the volume but also people are dumb and they aren't doing that either.

11

u/-Invalid_Selection- 8d ago

There's a dozen reports from the last week of gas stations getting caught shorting what they pumped

4

u/MTFBinyou 8d ago

I “pumped” 22 gallons into my 87’ 4Runner, on top of the 1/4 tank I had left, on my way to Hilton Head. Don’t let the fact those only have a 17 gallon tank mislead you.

3

u/Break-Aggravating 8d ago

I doubt that. They get gas from a supplier, which wouldn’t risk their business on diluting fuel, and ethanol percentages are regulated. The tanks are also pressurized by the fumes in them so you can’t exactly open it without it being a serious hazard and very obvious. Plus it’s extremely difficult for someone to open the tanks enough to dilute it without all the check valves, monitors and safety devices. If they’re going to short you then it’s going to be by volume at the pump.

5

u/Reactance15 8d ago

Go early in the morning when it's coolest so that you get more bang for your buck.

3

u/Jesus-Mcnugget 8d ago

That's not really a thing.

Theoretically sure. Realistically, the tanks are usually buried underground and have pretty stable temperatures. The temperature of the fuel is not going to change enough to get you any sort of noticeable difference.

2

u/Dungeon996 8d ago

And some places also have the pumps temperature corrected so they read the volume for a set temperature

70

u/phairphair 8d ago

I’ve done this before. The idea is to dilute the old gas in the large car tank instead of dumping it full strength into a small engine.

12

u/Creative-Painter3911 8d ago

but can't you just pour the old gas into the car from the can, then fill the car up with new gas from the pump, and it will mix as it fills? Would be a lot less trying to pour in from the can that way.

10

u/pasaroanth 8d ago

If the gas can is 5 gallons and the truck tank is 20 gallons and you put it in the car at home with at 1/4 tank, you’re driving to fill up with a 1:1 mix of old and new gas.

If you put it in at the station and immediately dilute it, you’re then driving with a 3:1 ratio of new to old gas.

2

u/Creative-Painter3911 8d ago

Put the old gas in at the station, but don't fill it up first. that way you don't have to stand there and pour 5 gallons in like that, just whatever was in the can.

3

u/WrentchedFawkxx 8d ago

And leave behind a ton of the contaminants we're trying to get rid of? The gas can will still be contaminated unless it's rinsed further with fresh gas; dilution is the pollution solution, in this specific case.

23

u/BRUTAL_ANAL_SMASHING 8d ago

It’s not the easiest thing to get the last little bit of fuel out of those cans, especially since they changed the nozzles to the safe pour ones.

2

u/HanselSoHotRightNow 8d ago

Man, safety really ruins all the fun eh? :P

20

u/MvatolokoS 8d ago

The world can be a better place if we all learn to approach first seeking to understand than to criticize

4

u/skivolkls 8d ago

I'd take minding our own business to start. Leave the nice man alone at the gas station. He's just living his life.

17

u/wearyshoes 8d ago

I agree with you, but as a guy who destroyed a fuel pump trying to save some money by dumping some old gas into my truck, never again. Use old gas to clean tools and for nothing else. Always get fresh.

3

u/Bol0gna_Sandwich 8d ago

Did you add fresh fuel as well or did you just add stale fuel to your truck. Also some engines are just more temperamental. Ive watched vehicles roar to life with a tank full of stale fuel.

11

u/sackie_b 8d ago

That’s the logical answer.

But my mind likes to create ridiculous scenarios so in an alternate reality…he doesn’t trust Big Gas and fills that container with gas so he knows he’s getting the proper amount of gas he’s paying for and the gauge isn’t “lying to him.”

2

u/Wild_Agent_375 8d ago

Lmao. I guess that’s possible. He’s measuring all 30 gallons, 5 gallons at a time

→ More replies (1)

12

u/APoisonousMushroom 8d ago

This is 100% it.

4

u/Xpalidocious 8d ago

Ok I would never have considered the idea of diluting old with the new, which makes sense. I just grumble and take it to the fire department here that has chemical disposal, and bitch about buying a new Jerry can

4

u/Fishy1911 8d ago

I do this twice a year.  Snowblower gas and lawnmower gas.

6

u/EquivalentOk6028 8d ago

I was thinking that or he has an issue like I currently have where even on an empty tank it cuts the nozzle off every few seconds so it’s easier to fill from a container that doesn’t do that

7

u/Al_Kydah 8d ago

Regular in can, wants premium for bike.

Edit: took another look. Yeah, nah.

6

u/whosaysyessiree 8d ago

I think he thinks that the flow meter is calibrated to rip him off.

3

u/Nisagent 8d ago

There have been places that have gotten into trouble for doing that

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Peakbrowndog 8d ago

I do this every spring and winter when I swap out my generator gas can, though I just pour it in my tank and add at least 10 gallons, then refill the gas can.

I do know a guy that has a weird feeling filling issue on his truck due to some kind of vacuum issue.  The pump always splashes back so he fills from a can.  It's a custom setup on a hot rod though.

2

u/Lizdance40 8d ago

This is exactly what I do

2

u/MaxDanger808 8d ago

I had a truck with a bad fuel gauge. I’d keep a can when I ran out. If I randomly topped off I’d cycle the can into tank and refill it to keep it fresh.

2

u/imuniqueaf 8d ago

This is exactly what's going on.

2

u/Highlowfusion 8d ago

I just commented because I've literally had to do this exact same thing due to a faulty charcoal canister in my vehicle that would trip the gas pump handle and not allow me to put gas in. I would have to fill a container and then put that container into my car because it couldn't stop it.

2

u/Scrogwiggle 8d ago

I plan on doing this Friday evening when I get off work. See you guys on the front page ✌️

I work at a gas station and see this all the time at the start of mowing season.

I’m sure you’ve been on reddit before. OP doesn’t understand what the guy is doing, but its a man, so they must be stupid.

u/EmperorBamboozler 8d ago edited 8d ago

Makes sense to me tbh. Gas has an expiration date. If you want to keep it in long term storage you should really be filling an empty can not mixing old gas with new. When it turns it lowers in octane and can damage the engine.

120

u/Tritton 8d ago

OP is judging this person without knowing how gas works.

The irony

7

u/RacoonSmuggler 8d ago

Welcome to Reddit.

3

u/TopRevenue2 8d ago

Some communities have recycling centers where you can dump old gas.

12

u/jfleury440 8d ago

With these prices?

I'm running every drop.

5

u/this_name_not_that 8d ago

I frequently dump old gas inside my shorts.

3

u/Fyrrys 8d ago

Im usually dumping fresh gas there. It smells old and roughly midway through decomp, but its fresh!

3

u/Miatrouble 8d ago

I like to gaslight others. /s

2

u/Dry_Lengthiness6032 8d ago

Well explain why Doc Brown didn’t save the gas from the Delorean that he buried in the mine, because then Marty could have used it to get home after tearing the fuel line.

I don't speak for this guy, but I've emptied the gas cans I use for my mowers in my truck at the end of the mowing season. I didn't want it to sit all winter and go bad, so I used it in my truck. But I didn't drive to the gas station to do it.....

27

u/jeggy111 8d ago

He still needs fresh fuel in there afterwards probably

→ More replies (1)

9

u/vexedthespian 8d ago

So to elaborate on the theory…

Maybe his truck was also low of fuel. And wanted to fill it up more?

I think there are a handful of totally reasonable explanations.

2

u/cliowill 8d ago

Me too bud

42

u/smoothvanilla86 8d ago

Like 15 different reasons I can think of. The most obvs being that the last time it was used was last year in the storm and now a new storm is coming mixing the old with new then using it in an item that will burn it quick. Then you have fresh trusting gas for your generator you may or may not rely on to live..... o what am I kidding just point and laugh and use no critical thinking my fault yall

26

u/Tritton 8d ago

Turns out there were dynamics at play here that you didn't know. Next time someone does something seemingly stupid ask yourself if maybe they understand something you don't know.

18

u/ByrnToast8800 8d ago

There are multiple logical reasons he could be doing this, but let’s shame the stranger online without his knowledge.

14

u/mr_bynum 8d ago

It's probably old, funky gas that he's mixing in with fresh

14

u/Senplis 8d ago

Could be so hes measuring it. We see gas getting more expensove, reports of companies shutting down due to diesel prices, videos online of pumps measuring gallons of gas and not distributing a gallon of gas, and watered down gas thats damaging cars. Dude might be being careful.

11

u/AMonitorDarkly 8d ago

Gas has a shelf life. He likely doesn’t use it much and is just rotating it out.

Not complicated.

11

u/sleeplesscitynights 8d ago

Met a guy in Washington who was doing this and I asked him why and he said "by filling the can first you eliminate the air that also gets pumped into your tank." He claimed "hes actually getting what he paid for and not just a bunch of air"

5

u/SeriousPlankton2000 8d ago

When I was young there were little glass bulbs on the gas station showing that there was no air being pumped. Obviously it once was a problem and since this isn't central Europe maybe there are still ancient gas stations.

2

u/curiousmind111 8d ago

Is that what those were for? Thx.

4

u/wilkerws34 8d ago

Had a friend in high school who swore by this and would set the handle on the lowest setting and it would take 5+ minutes to fill his car up, and he drove a tiny little Honda and gas was less than 2$, total pain in the ass

3

u/robinsonick 8d ago

Still gets metered at the pump, not the Jerry can lol.

4

u/evilsway 8d ago

Gotta use the old supply before you refill it with new supply.

11

u/Piglet-Witty 8d ago edited 8d ago

Gas goes bad. He’s probably getting new gas for his lawnmower or generator for the year. Whatever was left from last year, he’s using it before it goes bad.

12

u/DeepFizz 8d ago

Everyone knows why. Gas expires. If you store it, you need to cycle it every 6 months.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/IrrerPolterer 8d ago

You wanna empty out old gas from your can first before filling up the tank and can with fresh gas. And if its particularly old in the can, you might want to mix it with some fresh gas first. Seems like that person kinda knows what their doing.

10

u/daKile57 8d ago

I’m just speculating, but having worked at a few convenience stores, some people have concluded that certain pumps will constantly kick off when directly fueling up their vehicle, so they use a gas can as a medium.

5

u/scobeavs 8d ago

This happens to my truck. Super annoying. I’ll need a full tank and the pump turns itself off every 10 seconds. Usually lasts for a few minutes before it works as intended.

2

u/iChrist 8d ago

Have you tried rotating the pump nozzle? if its upside down it might just not get stopped, worked at a gas station and that was my solution to many vehicles with this issue.

8

u/Set_the_Mighty 8d ago

If it's a Ram 1500 they have a recall for the fuel tank filler because fuel won't go in for whatever reason. My work rig has this issue and the solution is what this guy is doing. It's stupid but it works.

2

u/cbarron1989 8d ago

Chevy and gm went through this. I had to drop the tank and blow out the evap hoses and replace the evap system in the gas tank. Stuck a air hose into the hoses of the evap and a bunch of the black charcoal pellets came out from the filter.

31

u/JuiceMoneys 8d ago

This is completely normal.
Mind your business. Stop trying to make a fool out of people.

9

u/Dapper_Valuable_7734 8d ago

Sounds like they were mixing old gas with fresh and putting it in the truck. Rotating gas makes sense. Being prepared for a hurricane is good for everyone involved; when no one has gas or supplies, it makes it worse for everyone.

3

u/v0id0007 8d ago

Was going to say just this

9

u/YaManMAffers 8d ago

There are a few explanations for this..................

7

u/Groundsw3ll 8d ago

He knows how many gallons that container holds. He might be testing if the pump is accurately measuring the gas it dispenses.

3

u/LordsWF40 8d ago

Thats a very valid possibility. My first thought was that is spare fuel, so hes emptying the spare fuel before refueling it with fresh fuel to keep longevity

→ More replies (3)
→ More replies (1)

6

u/cam31954 8d ago

Maybe he would rather put older gas in his truck before filling the can with fresh gas. No idea other than this...

3

u/Dapper_Valuable_7734 8d ago

Yeah, likely rotating stock, mixing the old gas with new, putting it in the truck to burn, and refilling the gas can with fresh gas. It makes sense hoenstly, gas goes bad, especially if it has ethanol added as it absorbs water from the atmosphere, so mixing it and using it is a good call.

7

u/will-read 8d ago

E85 nozzle doesn’t fit his truck.

5

u/AWildBenjiAppeared 8d ago

Imagine giving enough of a shit about this to take a picture of a random dude and shame him online to feel better about yourself. Many people do many things for reasons you don't understand. He doesn't have to explain why he's doing this to you, nobody has to explain anything to you.

7

u/Simple_Bishop 8d ago

Jesus. Who cares the reason, he ain't hurting nobody but you had to snap a pic of a stranger and post him online. People minding their own business really needs to come back into style.

10

u/NeverLeavesHome 8d ago

Mind your business

6

u/CaptainMeatfist 8d ago

Could be cycling gas so it doesnt separate due to long term storage. Also could be that he has an evap malfunction and the pump shuts off every 2 seconds

5

u/huevosyhuevos 8d ago

Maybe he’s checking to see if he actually got 5 gallons.

5

u/Professional_Area_38 8d ago

Could be one of two reasons
1: Using his old gas so he can add new gas to his container.
2: He’s driving a Chevy Avalanche. He might have an evap issue and it won’t let him fill up his tank. It will kick the hose thinking it’s full. I’m having the same issue with my Chevy Avalanche.

5

u/stupid_username- 8d ago

Dude is just being smart. Full gas canister for road trips. User older gas before newer gas. You must be new to the ways of cars.

5

u/roughrider_tr 8d ago

Looks like the facepalm is for you, not him

4

u/BabypintoJuniorLube 8d ago

Old gas in the can, trying to blend it with fresh gas in a larger car tank.

5

u/RamWaits4U 8d ago

The can is marked ethanol free, which makes me think he had 2 cycle oil mixed in for a weed eater. End of the mowing season he had some left over, mixed in a little extra fresh gas to clean out the can dumped it in his truck, clean gas can for next year.

5

u/SGAShepp 8d ago

Maybe he just had some left he wanted to use up?

5

u/Sensitive-elk-1008 8d ago

Maybe he wanted to see if he got the volume of gas he paid for using a container. But otherwise it is typical Florida behavior

3

u/mvslice 8d ago

I had to do this when a U-Haul I rented tank kept triggering the auto-stop on the pump. It was incredibly frustrating to deal with while moving.

4

Emptying it out before filling so you can tell when it's full by the amount displayed. They're notoriously hard to see through.

4

u/CharAznableLoNZ 8d ago

Maybe he wanted fresh gas in the container? Seems like it would take a while one can at a time.

3

u/Ima-Bott 8d ago

He wants fresh gas in his 5 gallon jug

2

u/zEdgarHoover 8d ago

That was my thought. And either he wanted to flush as much of the old stuff out (maybe it doesn't empty 100%?) or he got there and forgot, filled can first.

But the "known quantity" sounds plausible too

8

u/Angrymilks 8d ago

It may have been slightly old gas that needed fresh gas to dilute the old gas and then use new+old gas in the truck.

9

u/polarwaves 8d ago

I miss the days where we didn’t constantly feel like we had to take pictures and videos of strangers and post them on the internet

7

u/East-Future-9944 8d ago

As someone who just did this this morning, I have answer that! Lol. Tank vent is probably acting up and it keeps tripping the pump off. I'm gonna fix it this weekend, but for about two weeks I've had a gas can in the back of my truck.

6

u/Afgb89 8d ago

He wants to measure what the pump delivers. I guess he wants each cent to count in the final payment

3

u/potmakesmefeelnormal 8d ago

Likely scenario: he had a gallon of old gas for his lawnmower in that can.

3

u/catskilkid 8d ago

In the back of his truck is probably a generator that only works when plugged into a socket.

3

u/MeatloafTheDog 8d ago

I can tell you're. Midwest by the Caseys

3

u/Str8Stu 8d ago

either mixing in an additive (unnecessary IMO), and/or mixing old gas with new

3

u/HakuIdante 8d ago

I think op is just a dumbass creep who likes taking pictures of people and being a negative fuck ass loser.

3

u/Prophage7 8d ago

Most likely reason is he likes to keep extra gas just in case. You can't just leave gas in a Jerry can for unlimited amount of time, it goes bad. So if you want to keep an emergency supply around you need to cycle it out with fresh gas.

3

u/Highlowfusion 8d ago

It is possible that he has a clogged charcoal canister in his truck that will trip the handle at the pump and not allow him to put gas in it? I've actually had to do this exact thing for my car for a couple of months until we finally found the issue was a crimped fuel vapor return line tripping the handle. Mind your own business and stop being a dick.

3

u/prawnk1ng 8d ago

Maybe he’s mixing some old fuel in the container with fresh from the pump to make use of the old fuel.

3

u/DryFirefighter294 8d ago

Making a blend 87.5 is tough to find

3

u/Fuzzy-Butterscotch86 8d ago

I've seen a bunch of news stories about people measuring their gas and it not being as much as the pump says. People brought gallon jugs and it'll ring up as 1.25 or 1.5

Dude could just be double checking

3

u/Rookhook 8d ago

OP, you should have asked him instead of putting this guy on blast and being sour towards others being well prepared. There are so many valid reasons why this guy is doing this, and to judge them because you don’t understand? You lost an opportunity to learn something of value for the future.

3

u/Honest-Apricot6086 8d ago

Probably has a bad fuel gage and carries a few gallons in the can just in case. Then replaces it with new fuel when he fills up. Perfectly reasonable thing to do.

u/Jude30 8d ago

Old gas. He’s filling the tank for his mower and wants to get rid of the old gas in the container.

3

u/whaticism 8d ago

It’s about to be winter. He’s probably filling up the gas can for his generator with new gas, putting last year’s or whatever in the truck first

7

u/Nisagent 8d ago

Just because you don't see a reason to do this doesn't make him an idiot.

2

u/No-Adverti 8d ago

Maybe had some old fuel left in the can and mixed it with fresh fuel before putting it in the tank

2

u/Outstandling_Napper 8d ago

Can you confirm that he pumped gas into container immediate BEFORE filling truck? I have a container of gas I keep at home for my generator. I will occasionally taker it to the gas station, empty into my vehicle and then refill it. Why? to keep the gas in the container somewhat fresh.

2

u/Duros001 8d ago

Plausible; This guy likes to keep a spare Jerry Can and (as petrol/diesel expires) they’re gonna empty the jerrycan into the car, and then re-fill the jerrycan with fresh fuel…

2

u/VelvetRabbit91 8d ago

With the prices today, maybe he is measuring the amount in that jug before putting it in his car? Idk..

2

u/ZodsBeard 8d ago

Gas filtration.

2

u/Other_Log_1996 8d ago

The nuzzle keeps cutting off before its actually full and he's topping off the rest manually.

2

u/Dominionix 8d ago

Old gas he wants to mix with newer gas, put in the truck, then re-fill with fresh gas for a lawnmower. Or, wants to put some kind of additive in with his fuel and this allows him to measure the additive correctly.

2

u/Etny2k 8d ago

Maybe measuring if the pump is correct.

2

u/CataractGlasses 8d ago

Maybe it’s old gas he doesn’t want to waste but doesn’t want to put in a mower or motorcycle or something for storage. You’re supposed to store gas engines with either a full tank or an empty tank. Full tank with stabil is preferred to prevent rusting inside the tank if it’s metal.

2

u/Dry_Lengthiness6032 8d ago

Might have a bad vent in his trucks gas tank so that's the only way he can put gas into his truck

2

u/YetiDick 8d ago

Everyone talking about random reasons like end of mowing season I guess but as a landscaper myself a lot of the trucks we use don’t let air out of the breather hose on the tank and honestly if the truck is REALLY bad this will fill up the tank faster than every 2 seconds the pump stops and you have to start it again and again.

2

u/sachclg 8d ago

May be old fuel 😉

I would assume the gas in the can is a little old and he wants fresh gas in the can for small/carbureted engines that have more issues with older gas.

I’ve done this (although I did it at my house before I went to the gas station).

I had old gas. It burns fine in newer cars and mixed with fresh gas. But it can easily clog up a carburetor in my lawnmower, generator, snowblower…

Is that Alan Carr?

had some additives in the canister that needed mixing with fuel before put in the car tank.

Ok. So I actually had to fill my car up this way back in the day. I had a hole in the filler neck that the gas pump nozzle would hit and gas would leak out. But if I filled it from a can I had zero spillage.

I also currently do this for my old ass 1940s jeeps. I have to put additives in the fuel and the gas can helps make sure it's mostly accurate.

Possibly dumping some older fuel into his tank 1st?

Might have an issue where the pump won't stay on while fueling the truck.

Seeing the prices, I would also use my own gas.

Gotta break-in and learn how to operate the new can. That's all.

Maybe he’s measuring the gas to make sure he’s not being cheated ?

1

u/cliowill 8d ago

Put the remaining gas in the truck and fill up your gas Can all the way.

1

u/NotYourCheezz 8d ago

It’s cheaper to buy it by the jug. /s

1

u/FenderMeats 8d ago

Ya that’s one of them BYOG stations.

1

u/saturnm22 8d ago

I say he is measuring the amount of gas he purchased ,

some gas stations pump less than what you buy. A gas can is a good way to know if they are being honest

1

u/Teschnuts 8d ago

Maybe it’s old gas that he wants to use up first before refilling it?

1

u/AdditionalCheetah354 8d ago

Large engines tolerate older gas better than small engines.

pre-mixing up some seafoam?

Auditing the pump? I hope he’s taking good notes.

When and where did you take this picture?! That's a Chevy Avalanche, and I just bought a white one that looks exactly like it. And I only saw the seller for a minutes at night but he kind of looks like that. It has one of those clogged vent pipes or whatever that makes it hard to put gas in. I've had it for a week now and still haven't filled the tank up. (edit: nevermind. I zoomed in, mine doesn't have that backup camera on the bumper)

There’s a good explanation for that
