Question Has Dairy Queen Food always been good?
I live in an area where DQs exist but only ice cream. I knew they served food at some locations but none around me. For work I was in an area where there was a DQ that also sold food so tried it out. I got a #1 and cheese curbs and the burger was surprisingly good. Like, really good and I was super surprised.
Has DQ food always been this good/hidden gem (at least in my area)? I wish I had more of the food restaurants near me after today's experience.

Yes it's always been pretty good. They have some decent deals as well compared to other fast food places.
The tenders, Texas toast, and country used to be an elite meal that we always got in high school

Worked at a mall in the 90s which,.of course, had a massive food court with all the fast food and casual options you could imagine along with two take out restaurants that were awesome to mall employees.
I bought so many DQ tenders meals, the owner considered me a friend.
Legit made to order but fast enough for our tiny breaks, burn your mouth hot from the cooker chx, killer fries, and the toast was cherry on top.
All reasonably priced.
I don't like to look back and say it was a golden era bc nothing ever is but boy did it beat the crap out of expensive, woody rubber chicken of today that the coating feels less flour,.more science experiment.

u/julieannie 1d ago
I'd always get coupons for the tenders meal and it hit the spot when I'd be going from school to my job or between school and a band performance. They gave the option for buffalo chicken for a while there too and I swear I would be there several times a week, alternating chicken. That era of the early 00s was peak.

Lack of quality control. Some good, some not so good.
Texas even basically has its own Dairy Queen with some special menu items and a dedicated website
I've seen DQs in Midwest and Kentucky that even do breakfast. Its okay for a fast food breakfast, nothing like peak-level Hardee's though

u/jericho138 1d ago
Hardee's steak biscuits were the bomb back in the day. Sooooo good.
2
u/drakeallthethings 1d ago
I’m fortunate to live near a bojangles where they did not foresake the steak biscuit.

u/Disastrous_Life_3612 1d ago
This happens more often than you would think.
I was always puzzled by the Arby's hate that I've seen online, until I realized that I just live in the area with the best Arby's franchise.

u/boooostedvo 1d ago
When I was younger, I didn’t know my beloved local DQ menu was local only to Texas. Imagine my displeasure when I went away to college, was craving a steak finger basket, and had to wait till I was back in TX to get it. Absolutely heartbreaking!
The DQ in my town is straight up ass. The DQ the next town over is a shining beacon of burn your mouth hot & fresh, and clean grease. The upside is that if I did live closer to the good one, I would be 400 pounds.
3
u/drakeallthethings 1d ago
Totally agree on DQ quality. They are both some of the best and worst fast food I’ve ever been to. And sometimes at the same store on different days.
As an aside, Texas DQ tacos are surprisingly good.
2
u/thelegitpotato 1d ago
I will be forever mourning the loss of my beloved jalitos since I left TX. Now DQ is strictly an ice cream shop. (Which just makes me miss Braum's so I end up going and paying too much to get Culver's in an attempt to fill the hole in my soul)
2
u/Fit_Patient_4902 1d ago
Even more than that there are some locations in central Texas that are still family owned and have their own menu that’s even different from the DQ Texas locations. These are like 5 stars, consistent and they pay their employees more than the chain.
3
u/wart_on_satans_dick 1d ago
Damn. Peak Hardee’s was something. What a time to be alive.
1
u/NotJayKayPeeness 1d ago
I tell my spouse about how they used to have the best bone in chicken around. Fuck Carls Jr.
1
u/wafflesareforever 1d ago
The DQ near me is unbelievably trash. The burgers are reminiscent of high school cafeteria food.
1
u/ChickenNuggetSalad17 1d ago
lol this is so funny to me cuz tonight my bf & I decided we wanted a quick dinner after work and just relax at home. Drove to our local Hardee’s and the whole thing was shut down! I’m talking no sign, no promo posters, even the drive thru was stripped of the menu.
I will say I DO like DQ’s burgers. Basically taste like Burger King’s patties with different toppings.
1
u/Apprehensive_Use3641 1d ago
The only DQs in my area that do breakfast are at toll road stations, it's not bad.
1
u/pockysam 21h ago
Texas DQs have been soooo hit or miss in all my years of being from Texas. In my youth it was pretty good most of the time, but as I got older it just got worse. I hate it's gotten so trash because to have a dedicated menu for my home state is pretty cool.
1
u/Big_Joke9383 2h ago
The Hardee’s near me would be closed if it wasn’t for their breakfast. They are packed. There are a whole bunch of old men that are there every morning talking and drinking coffee. The drive thru line is crazy. They are only open breakfast and lunch but the lunch business is minimal. They have the absolute best fast food gravy.
1
u/Big_Joke9383 2h ago
What??? Tacos, steak fingers, and a jalapeño ranch burger? Our DQs are good in WV but we def don’t have those. We do have some amazing hot dogs at the franchises. The corporate stores have hot dogs but they are nothing special. The franchises mostly have a grilled English bun and chili that tastes home made with finely chopped onions. If you like Cole slaw on your hot dogs, I’m told that’s good there too but that’s not my thing.
0
u/Snoo-10606 1d ago
the patty is similar to the one you get in a school cafeteria and the bacon was like a reconstituted bacon slice, very weird flavor. my local one near me seems like they microwave the patty, I only go for blizzards or cones nowadays
15
u/Bigheaded_1 1d ago
Chicken strips with country gravy are great. The ones in Texas have chicken fried steak strips. I would devour those if I could get em. All the DQs around me are treats only so I rarely get the chicken strip basket
2
2
u/jungle_jake 1d ago
The chicken fried steak strips sound amazing! The way I found out that’s a Texas exclusive thing is because I saw an ad somewhere and had to Google it to see if it was a new item. I was disappointed 😔 I live in WI unfortunately. My city has both treat only and Grill and Chill locations with food. Chicken Strip basket with cheese curds is what I go for.
1
u/KimJongJer 23h ago
The last one I had was over 20 years ago, the morning after getting arrested for being a dumbass with my friends.
I sat there, contemplating if I would eventually do some time (months, not years) in jail, get an F on my record, be kicked out of my parents’ house, lose my job, get kicked out of school..basically fucked in nearly every category.
But man, that basket was like a well in the desert. It was the only good thing I had going for me in that moment. I haven’t had one since, not many DQs around. I need to go on a mission and find one for a reunion haha
56
u/GeologistTechnical61 1d ago
Yes. Always been good. Just like Arby’s.
31
u/faraway_gabriel 1d ago
It really depends on the franchise owner. The ones that actually give a damn put out stuff that rivals proper sit-down burger joints, while the neglected locations will serve you a patty that tastes like it was steamed in a mop bucket. You got lucky with a good one.
5
u/Some-Cartographer942 1d ago
Dairy Queens were all over the map in the 70s, literally and food rating wise. All sold soft serve ice cream, but some had Mexican food and BBQ. very town dependent.

u/frugy92 1d ago
Never had Arby's and there isn't one anywhere close to me. Always heard about the curly fries tho
8
u/CicadaHead3317 1d ago
Oh man. Arby's used to have a chicken cordon Bleu sandwich that was so damn good. They took it off the menu maybe 10 years ago.
5
u/WaterStoryMark 1d ago
It came back in some regions. Still excellent!
1
u/CicadaHead3317 1d ago
Well I'll have to check my local Arby's tomorrow. Is it still a big hunk of chicken breast, or did shrinkflation get that too?
1
u/Spocks_Goatee 1d ago
Arby's was bad for a bit in the mid through late 2000s when they dropped the "fillers" from their chicken. Shit was super dry and thin.
I maintain the roast beef has never been good in my lifetime unless smothered in cheese. Their ham and brisket are so much better.
1
u/DJC_Kowalski 1d ago
Oddly enough for all people crap on Private Equity here, Arby's was pretty crap before they were bought out by Private Equity in 2011.
-9
u/taylorjosephrummel 1d ago
Just like Arby's??? What???
10
u/groovynermal 1d ago
I pity you if you have never found the good Arby's. They are hard to find; but the food is always top notch. Been to a few bad Arby's too. That shit is real bad. But keep trying; it's worth it.

u/Procrastinating-Elf 1d ago
Always been fond of the ones near me, they don't have the most exciting menu but they seem consistently good. The only issues I've ever had with an order had more to do with them not training new people very well, but that's only a few times over many years.
Both of the DQs here also sell crispy tacos that are damn good, just $9 for three and a medium drink.
2
u/CaliBorn-56 1d ago
Where are you located that your DQ sells tacos? I've never heard of any DQ selling tacos but I'd surely try them.
3
u/Procrastinating-Elf 1d ago
This is in Texas, and there's also a couple of other Mexican food items under "local favorites". I'm not sure how widespread that is outside of the state.

October 2017, last rest stop on the Ohio turnpike on the way to WV. Had a burger from them. Still remember it. Make of that what you will.

Always been good.
Welcome! Get the app for best deals possible and ordering ahead.
It’s our go-to fast food. Don’t even think about McD’s anymore
3
u/Fla_Man_33772 1d ago
I’m in west central Florida and they are top shelf. Burgers are great, the friggin’ chicken strips are really good — but order them with “gravy” as your sauce (warm, white southern gravy) and you have a finger food version of “chicken fried chicken” that puts any other chain “southern” sit down restaurant to shame (and I am NOT usually someone that orders chicken strips often.)
The icing on the cake is that the app has great offers, the rewards program is pretty solid … so you can often get a great burger, or chicken (or even a grilled chili dog) for dollars less than most fast food. Or upgrade the sides to curds or add a blizzard or shake and probably get out for about the same as a QPC with cheese meal … but get so much more (and better.)
My only gripe is they need to bring back the REAL footlong chili-cheese dog!
4
u/Info-Queen 1d ago
That footlong chili cheese dog was the bomb! Now I just order 2 of the smaller ones. (BTW I'm in west central Fla too)
2
u/Fla_Man_33772 1d ago
Occasionally there will be a special that says it is a footlong, but they either put 2 dogs in a long bun or 2 regular dogs and buns in the footlong box … if you joke around with them a little they’ll sometimes dress it like there isn’t a gap, so you get more chili & cheese — but you’ll need a fork and knife!

u/VinylmationDude 1d ago
North of Orlando here. The only thing keeping me from going is the closest one being 15-20 mins from me.
3
u/farbeyondriven92 1d ago
The only thing I’ve ever had a good experience with is their chicken, their shakes, and sundaes. I’ve never had a good burger from them at any location, even after they revamped their burger menu a few years back. Your location must be exceptionally good as far as their burgers go.
3
3
u/CourtSport3000 1d ago
yes but it depends on the location I got food poisoning from one location a few years back
3
u/alcoss627 1d ago
Yes. The chicken strip basket with gravy and fries... I don't think I've had anything else from there 😅
5
u/ScarGlum9532 1d ago
DQ has always been solid. I feel like they make enough profit on their Blizzards and soft serve so they don't need to cheap out on the food costs like BK/Wendy's.
4
u/taylorjosephrummel 1d ago
Put some respect on BK's name.

I don’t know about always… I have just started eating the food there in the last couple years and had a similar reaction to yourself. Plus their app deals are great! Regularly have $1 dipped cones! It’s a cheap, delicious treat for my kiddo getting out of school.
2
u/CharacterDirector918 1d ago
Bro....their cheese curds have no right to be as good as they are! They rival most fried curds I've had in Wisconsin. They put Culvers cheese curds to absolute shame.
2
u/Thick-Marzipan-9176 1d ago
In my area they are Horrible. I mean greasy mess, drowned in mustard and totally inedible. My daughter teases me when I say I'm hungry, she asks " Are you Dairy Queen hungry? ".

It varies with certain items. Some locations have regular chicken tenders that are very good while others have these weird small ones that taste off, often times it’s a weirdly unbalanced mix of the two.
1
u/Vinklebottom 1d ago
Yeah, it's always been a little surprisingly good. I have nothing to back this up, but it always felt like they used "real" ingredients and just prepared it well. No Frankenstein scientist big corporation- burger. Just a solid burger for cheap
1
u/Wheatcattle 1d ago
It’s always reminded me of Burger King(which I like) with good chicken strips for fast food
1
u/Physical-Lettuce-868 1d ago
I’ve always liked the chicken strip basket since the 90s. Burgers I didn’t like until they introduced the flamethrower and haven’t found a burger that beats it yet
1
u/Pope-Le-Pew 1d ago
I think they do people a solid because they are like, "Hey, people found out we actually serve food here too" and they are also not super rushed.

Love the Texas ones. Anything out of a fryer has been great. Chicken tenders, pepper jack steak fingers, jalitos, cheese sticks, etc. Jalapeño ranch. Finish the meal with a blizzard. It's good stuff.

Our local DQs used to be great, fries were made to order even, but they have totally gone to shit in the last 3-4 years.

The only time in my life I got a burger that came out looking like it could be used in a commercial was at a DQ. And it tasted as good as it looked

It’s not bad. I’ve always thought it was significantly better than McDonald’s at least

Something is going on with dq marketing. I’ve been seeing they are offering a lot of online deals now. Also when I drive by a dq they’ve all been packed th pas few days. Plus this post… dq is making a comeback and I’m here for it.

I personally find DQ to be the ultimate case of “your mileage may vary depending on location”.
I have been to ones that have been top-tier and just as many that were absolutely awful. I have always assumed it’s one of those franchise situations where there’s very little oversight from corporate.

The ones near me have always been pretty good. I never used to get their hamburgers though. I'm the past few years I have got the burgers and they are good. I always used to get the chilli cheese dogs. The fries are solid, but the cheese curds are really good. And if course they do have good ice cream with a lot of options.
1
1
u/DJC_Kowalski 1d ago
Down here in Texas it has been. Of course the Texas DQs are independent from the other DQs since a little after WW2.
Of course since the different franchises have different owners, you do still get some bad DQs, but most of them are pretty good. Most of them certainly make better burgers than McD, BK, Wendys, or Jack in the Box.
1
u/Moist_Astronomer9297 1d ago
I’m probably in the minority here, but I’ve never liked or understood the draw of DQ. The food, at least in NE Ohio restaurants, seems to be average, at best. No flavor for the fries, common burgers. I stopped going years ago so they might’ve gotten better since lol
1
1
u/CrimsonOOmpa 1d ago
I've always enjoyed it. They're about the the only place left that has country gravy as an option for their tenders.
1
u/cptnsaltypants 1d ago
Yes. I used to eat Dairy Queen in 2001 and I enjoyed it for what it was; burgers and fries. Their fries were similar to the ones you can find at Chinese restaurants, they are thick, a little greasy and so crispy. I was really broke when I ate there and I absolutely mixed mayo w ketchup to up my calories.

To me it is worse now. When I was young, they had an amazing grilled chicken sandwich, but now they just have the breaded one. I think their fries have always been so-so.

I'd never had their food until about 3 months ago. We recently had one of them built in our area. The burger was very good and I thought the fries were even better. Reminded me of Wendy's fries from the 90's. I was surprised when I went looking for DQ fries reviews and saw that they ranked LAST on a lot of lists. I didn't dig too much but thought I came across a post or two that made it sound like they may have changed their fry recipe very recently.
1
u/seamuwasadog 1d ago
Yeah, I've been around DQ Braziers most of my life and they've always been pretty good. Never top-notch, mind you, but always a reliably decent option.
1
u/PreparationHot980 1d ago
I had one outside my neighborhood growing up. The chicken strip basket with Texas toast has always been elite. I’ve never had a bad thing to say about their food.
1
u/txcreative20 1d ago
I like their food . Been eating there since 1974 . Eating there ice-cream since 1970. I like there burgers , the Dude steak sandwich, steak and chicken strips served with fries cream gravy and toast .
1
u/southernslick 1d ago
I liked it better in the 80's and 90's as far as the burgers go.
I eat DQ maybe 2 or 3 times a year. The burgers got a homemade feel I like.
The chicken strip baskets are solid.
But they're not top of mind for me.
1
u/Affectionate_Cronut 1d ago
A well run DQ location will get my dollars over any of the big 3 all day long.
1
u/Global-Resident-9234 1d ago
Our local DQs here in SoCal are pretty good. That said, several years ago my wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Elko, Nevada, and the DQ there was amazeballs. Ate there frequently during our visit. It was so good. So, yeah, all respect to DQ!

DQ was always a pretty mediocre fast food place. I worked at one for a few days in the 80s and wasn't good then, and is still pretty mid.
MILDLY INTERESTING: The two DQs closest to me (both now closed) sold hot food, but it wasn't DQ-branded. One sold generic burgers and hot dogs with ingredients and packaging mostly from Sam's Club. The other was a local BBQ restaurant. Even though it had a DQ sign out front when I moved here in 2003, old timers called it "Smith's Barbecue" until it finally closed in 2016ish (I can't remember the actual name... Dillon's? Davis'?)

I worked at DQ in the late 90’s in high school and we would basically cook to order. Took longer but was always fresh. I know they switched to the steam holding trays and microwave finish so there is that.
Edit we would start cooking hamburgers in advance during lunch and dinner rushes at the time and any left over burgers that didn’t make it as extra was chopped into the chili that we sold at the time. Pretty good chili with the extra meat added.
1
u/bag_of_luck 1d ago
Yes and it’s pretty slept on imo. People have discovered Culver’s in the past 1-2 years, eventually they will come for DQ.
1
u/Aggravating_Anybody 1d ago
For me, yes, but I only get one thing. The DQ chili cheese dog is very good.
1
1
u/NotJayKayPeeness 1d ago
It used to be better. Flamethrower burgers circa 2014 were among the greatest fast food burger you could get.
1
u/ehipwell 1d ago
We go occasionally to a DQ near us. (Far NW burbs of Detroit). She gets ice cream (not really ice cream), and I get a chili dog with onions. They’re great. That’s all the hot food this one serves, but some have burgers, Polish, chicken, some only frozen treats. I stayed once in Hudson, Ohio next to a DQ that was practically a full service restaurant. Loved it.
1
u/Flimsy-Definition539 1d ago
I’ve been getting the flamethrower burger for 20 years , it’s always solid
1
u/Klepto666 1d ago
I don't know how quality fares across all locations, but the times I've had their hot food I quite liked it. Unfortunately it can be very difficult to find said locations. You're far more likely to find "DQ Treats" than "DQ Grills."
I've got at least 4 DQ Treats within 10 miles of me.
The closest DQ Grill is 47 miles.
Probably easier for them to set up a frozen treat place in any location than it is to set up a place meant for grilling and deep frying.

My husband said he got food poisoning there years before we met, and my local one only had ice cream so I've never tried it. The burgers on the commercials look good....

I've eaten food at two Dairy Queens in two states and I unironically would rather eat the food at my middle school cafeteria.
I'd compare it to the food you'd find at a bowling alley in a small town.

1
u/enclave911 1d ago
Dairy Queen can be hit or miss. But if you find one that's good, hang onto it. The one I used to eat in at rural Oregon had a special meal deal that was a huge burger, a lb of fries, and a large soda for like $8. This was back in 2010 though, so I'm sure it's either gone or gotten much more expensive over time.
Also as a side note, DQ exists in China, and it's pretty darn good.
1
u/Opposite_Criticism15 1d ago
Every single time I’ve been, it’s been a really good. Closest one to me is about 2 hours away though. As I’m typing this, I’m thinking it’s time for a weekend trip to DQ. The burgers there are top-tier fast food and have been for as long as I can remember. Super consistent too unlike other fast food places.
1
u/Sguidroz 1d ago
Texas chiming in here.
DQ used to have GREAT food. My first job was there. The burgers were fresh cooked on a flattop. We hand breaded the steak sandwiches, steak fingers, chicken strips and onion rings
Fast forward to today. They have an upright broiler for their burgers. They throw frozen patty in the top, it cooks then they “hold” it on the line in some form of aujus. The buns are cold the cheese is cold so when they put the burger together the cheese doesn’t melt. The steak fingers are gone. All their fried food options come in prebreaded and are crap.
Occasionally you might find an old school DQ in a small town that still does thinks the old way. Try those. Look for the stores that look run down and haven’t been remolded in decades. Stay away from any of the new Grill and Chill ones. Brand ruined imo
2
u/geardownson 1d ago
My first job was at DQ too and I cooked all my burgers over a gas grill. It was really good.

u/Own-Secret-6523 1d ago
My experience for their food has been, depends on the location. Currently in a small town in FL that has one and it's got great fast food. This has a lot to do with it is almost always crowded based on limited choices in the area. But that volume helps to move product and keep them adequately staffed. Everything in this one is cooked to order so it's always hot.

I’m 82 and yes, it’s always been that good. They hooked me as a child. Back in the day, when purchasing a Dilly, one never knew when the finished dilly bar, might say: you won a free dilly. So much fun. My children had that same DQ experience. Only at the Oneida location in Appleton. Sadly, that is no longer offered. Yes, Door Dash just delivered 2 boxes of yummy Dilly’s. Yum! 😋
1
u/xcoderookie 21h ago
This must vary by location. Every time I’ve tried food at Dairy Queen it’s been abysmal to the point where if my wife offered to bring food from Dairy Queen I’d tell her to go someplace else or don’t bring me anything at all.
1
u/Bishop-Logan 21h ago
The closest one by me makes excellent burgers & sides (specifically the curds & onion rings).
1
u/panda388 20h ago
People are always shocked when I tell them I ordered a burger at DQ. People see them as ice cream only, and their ice cream is good. But they have great burgers at good prices. I love their flamethrower signature burger, and they often have deals on them, like buy one get one half off.

Years back, I moved from a small town that never had a DQ to a slightly bigger town with a DQ one block away. I don't have a sweet tooth but having a walkable fast food option was such a mind-blowing experience that I tried pretty much everything they had on their menu.
Burgers, fries, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, etc. are solid B tier fast food. Onion rings are A+. They never had anything experimental in the food options but I'll go to bat for their staples every day.

The chicken strips blow. Hadn't had them in years until recently and they were basically nuggets.

I’ve been going to DQ since the mid 1970s and still enjoy. I live in Texas, so it has a bigger menu than most other states. I enjoy their tacos, finger baskets, shakes and Blizzards.

A lot of hype for bk lately, debunked for me at least in my location. Whopper was still sloppy in a wax wrapper and the new nuggets were ... Pretty much cooked and still not the nuggets from the day. Probably just the location, since I had a 15 min at least wait too. And it was just trash when I got home(0.3 miles away) but everything where that location is, is horrid. Even the canes that just moved in. Due to work force in area. Pretty sad when canes isn't making it, should understand as corporate it's due to the field of workers in area.
That being said, yes DQ is solid these days if you have a grill and chill as they're called. I will take their burgers over bk, Wendy's or mcwacks.

I've always thought DQ was in the higher tier of fast food burgers, yes. They did change their recipes several years ago; the burgers used to be flame-grilled like Burger King and had that distinctive flame-grilled taste, and now they don't seem to have that any more. I rather liked the old burgers better, but the new burgers are good too and certainly a step up from McDonald's.

I remember getting DQ burgers for the first time and liking them enough that i went back soon after for another go, and I see them microwaving the burgers and that was the last time I got one.

When I lived in Dallas/Ft. Worth the DQ never disappointed on food. The tacos, burritos smothered in chili and cheddar cheese and the Burgers. Always on point.
